“I’ve seen worse,” Brooke said when she saw Chloe’s truck. And she had. In good spirits, she sat in the passenger seat. Brooke did her best to avoid responding to Chloe’s smoking, but she could feel her nose crinkle instinctively. Brooke didn’t much care if Chloe didn’t want her help; she needed something to do, and this was as good as anything else.

“That’s not how wakes work, girl,” Brooke said with a sad smile. “They happen once the coffin’s already in the ground. And then everyone gets wasted and talks about the dead person and how unfair it is that they’re dead.” Brooke wasn’t great at explaining it, but she hoped she got her point across well enough.

“And her killer getting arrested would be justice, not a send-off.” She shut up and looked out the window as the trees passed them by.

She couldn’t imagine anything worse than what she saw of Rachel’s body. Nor did she want to. Chloe shook off the thoughts and climbed into the cab of her truck, settling in and shoving the keys in the ignition. The truck started with a roar and she chuckled, despite everything, and threw it in reverse.

With an arm slung over the back of her headrest, Chloe turned to back out of her parking space, catching Brooke’s small smile as she did so. “ Sounds like a day of my life, actually. ” She sneered, remembering all the times she whined and pleaded and repeated like a damned broken record, ‘I wish Rachel was here’. Chloe was still surprised Max never told her to shut up.

“ You’re right. Burning his body and pissing on his ashes would be a better send-off. ” Her voice was cold, reminiscent of times past, and she cleared her throat, shoving the truck into drive and guiding it into the street. Her cigarette lay limp on her lips and she sighed, flicking the ashes out the window. “ ’m I botherin’ you? ”

Do you think Max made the right decision if she didn't save Arcadia Bay?

“ I trust Max more than I trust myself. If she thinks saving me over Shitpit Bay is the better choice, then fuck yeah it’s the right decision. She’s been through so much shit, so many things that I can’t even begin to comprehend. She’s seen some shit. So I can respect whatever she chooses, whether it be next to her when we finally get the fuck outta here or looking down on her from wherever the hell I end up after.

Though, to be completely honest, part of me still panics whenever I think about how she could have just as easily gone back and killed me. But she didn’t, and you’ll never understand how much that affects me, what it means to me.

She’s worried. She’s more than worried. What was the proof in that bottle? How much had they taken? Had Chloe taken more than her when she hadn’t been looking? When you do this shit, you need to be careful, holy shit. She’s on the roof, and Rachel herself isn’t entirely sober as of yet, but she was a good deal farther along than her friend.

❝ We’re getting you off the roof, and you’re getting some water, and laying down. Okay? Fuck. ❞

A real effort is given to keep her from falling off before she stands herself, moving her toward the place where she could jump down and grab the ladder.

Chloe laughs, messy and slow and wet, and turns to give Rachel her most disapproving glare, which doesn’t really look anything more than failed attempt at hiding a smirk. “ Nah - no, no, nah, now why would, I, do something - ” she throws her weight around with exaggerated hand movements, far too fast, and stumbles, landing harshly on her bottom but being too out-of-body to feel it. “ Something as, sil-dumb as that? ”

Her next laugh comes out as a bubbly giggle, light and airy as she flails around her hand in an attempt to grab onto Rachel’s anything; when she finally succeeds after numerous failed attempts, her fingers curl over the fabric of Rachel’s shirt and she jerks at it, trying to pull her back. “ Ra-Rachel, noooo, don’t leave,” she whines, not unlike a child. “ Let’s have fun! ”

“ You’re ridikulus, Nymphadora Price. ” Nathan had never tried getting in trouble by any municipal employee. His father was influential enough to have people view even Nathan with great reverence, and thus his awful behavior had never had any consequences. So naturally, he just flicked the store keep off once noticing his judgmental stare with a careless attitude. He ran his card through the credit card machine, punching the security number in without even looking once the clerk had beeped in all their buyings. He asked for a pack of blue kings with it, and got it without question.

Chloe sighed heavily, sliding her hand over her face. “ I don’t even have a comeback for that, Nate, ” she retorted, rolling her eyes. She slid the bag off the counter after the store keep had finished bagging it, slipping it over the crook of her elbow and bumping the tip of her boot against Nathan’s shoe. “ Alright, boy wonder, let’s get the hell out of here. ”

She propped the door open with her back, letting Nathan pass her by before jerking away from it and letting it fall shut. “Just a reminder, that you better be ready to deface shit if things go wrong. ”

Brooke nodded when Chloe said her name. She thought the blue hair had seemed familiar outside the context of the posters. No wonder she’d been so adamantly pressing to find Rachel; the two had been close. It made perfect sense now.

“Y’know,” Brooke noted. “I could tag along. You’d get done a lot quicker if you had someone helping you out.” And God knows I need something to do, she added mentally. “You’ll never finish your sweep of the town before it gets dark otherwise.” She trotted to catch up to Chloe. “Course, if you don’t want the help, alls you gotta do is say the word.” She cursed herself mentally for slipping back into her hometown’s dialect, but didn’t break stride.

“Class is cancelled for the next week or so anyway…for obvious reasons.” She thought for a moment. “Y’know, maybe we should have a wake. A proper send-off.”

Chloe had to force herself to keep her mouth shut, at least for a moment. The urge to blurt out that no, she had it just fine herself, almost overpowered her but she set her jaw and smiled. “ If you want, sure, why the fuck not? Could use the help anyways, and if you’re not busy, I don’t see the harm, ” she agreed, wrestling her cigarette box and lighter out of her jean pocket. She slid out a stick, pressing it against her pursed lips and lit it, returning the packaging and lighter to her pocket.

Pulling in a breath of smoke settled whatever nerves were on edge, and Chloe sighed, reaching in her other pocket to tug out her keys. “ If you do want to come, I hope you don’t mind the shitmobile I got. ” She smirked, jerking her head in the parking lot before turning and walking in that general direction. “ Not the safest thing in the world, but it sure the hell beats walking. ”

If Brooke’s words affected her, Chloe didn’t let it know besides the slight quiver of her fingers against her cigarette, which she quickly hid by huffing another breath of nicotine. “ Not sure how that would work. It was pretty bad, what was...left. I always figured a proper send off would be the dickbag getting locked up forever. ” It hurt, to talk about Rachel with the knowledge that she was actually gone. But she figured if she didn’t start, she would never properly heal.

She scoffed, voice slurring when she finally replied. “Yer really gunna scold me for it?” She stood on unsteady legs, wobbling as she leaned back to muster the strength to fling her bottle off her roof and into the yard next door.

Brooke looked at the accrued pile of flyers. There was something satisfying about them no longer being up, like a burden being lifted from the collective shoulders of campus. “Yeah,” Brooke said. “Death is shitty. Weird that such a natural thing has such a profound impact…” She trailed off, staring at the empty board for a moment. “Oh. I’m Brooke. Brooke Scott. Sorry…I’m just…it’s been a bad month.”

Chloe rolled her shoulders in a loose shrug. “ Death’s a part of life, I guess. ” She raised her arms in a stretch, humming appreciatively when she felt the bones pop and the tenseness leave her limbs. “ I’m Chloe Price, but you probably already knew that. Also known as, ‘Rachel’s tag-along’. ” The amount of times she had heard that from Frank alone was enough to make the name stick. She would probably have to see him soon.

Pulling out a piece of paper and pencil, Chloe scratched a large X over a location on her crudely drawn map, glancing over it before folding it back up and shoving it in her jean pocket. She turned, eyeing the setting sun and frowning. “ Damn, I gotta get going. I still have places to go to tear the rest of this shit down and I don’t want to do it in the dark. ” She turned back to Brooke, grinning. “ Really, thanks for the help. I hella appreciate it; I would’ve been here for another half hour if it were just me. ”

He rolled his faux-red colored eyes when Chloe made a comment about America’s Next Box Model, the words of her’s brought him back to endless of nights spend on Victoria’s couch trying to follow who they liked and who they didn’t, and which one sucked and which one didn’t. Nathan just grabbed the nearest box and stuck his tongue out, locating the nearest piece of string he could find. It happened to be leather thread on some kind of DIY stand with other creative bullshit kits for tween girls or middle aged women. “ Yeah, well; why not contribute the only way I definitely can? ” Nathan fished out his card from his back pocket. “ That’s all? ”

A loud laugh spilled from her mouth and Chloe clapped a hand over it, watching the store-keep cross his arms over his chest with a judgmental glare. The urge to flick him off or say something rude squirmed in her gut but she suppressed it; god only knows what would happened if she did and she wasn’t about to get kicked out after coming all that way.Not that it was overly far or anything, but that made more effort than Chloe cared to handle.

“ Go ahead and try, Pres-foy, but we’ll see if I don’t Crucio you first. ” She hummed, toying with the string rack, squinting her eyes in concentration. She rolled her plan over in her mind, eventually tugging two more strings off the rack and adding it with Nathan’s. “ I think we just need some duct tape and we’re good to go. ” Chloeplucked some off of a shelf, not bothering to question why the store sold it in the first place, before sashaying her way to the counter and leaning against it, giving the clerk her best “aren’t I a little stinker?” smile.

Nathan followed straight in the heels of Chloe’s tacky pirate-boots. When dressing up he allowed Victoria to stab him in the eye with red contact lenses, but thank God he stood his ground when she wanted to paint his face even paler. “ What the fuck? Don’t say you didn’t expect me to have watched Harry Potter, Pot Price, I’ve been a kid too, believe it or not, ” granted he grew up much faster than kids were supposed to, Harry Potter was as much an escape for him as any other child sucked into the magical world JK Rowling created. Entering the supermarket Nathan grabbed a shopping bag, eyeing the container with used cardboard boxes. “ Shut up, like you weren’t gonna let me pay for it anyway. ”

Running her fingers over dusty boxes and shiny cans, Chloe made her way to the back of the shop, to the coolers. “ Yeah, well, I figured you would’ve been too good for a mudblood movie, ” she teased, using a reference of her own.

She left Nathan by the boxes, turning the corner and stepping up to the coolers. The amount of different kinds of soda was almost overwhelming, but it was hard to overwhelm Chloe and she only needed coke anyways. She snapped a six-pack, shutting the door and making her way back to Nathan.

“ Awww, Nate! How kind of you to offer! ” She fought to keep a straight face but a cheeky grin broke through anyways and she held up the coke like a trophy. “ Ta-da! We just need a string now, right? Unless you’d like to continue choosing America’s Next Box Model. ”
