GLEE REWATCH S02E12 — Silly Love Songs
loveeee characters who think they're likable but not lovable. characters who know they have surface-level admirable or alluring traits and so make sure to highlight those traits so that nobody looks closer to see what's underneath. characters who know they're hot or clever or cool and use that as a suit of armor so that no one ever gets close to them, because when they strip bare and show their vulnerability they're not any of those things, which means they have nothing left to make up for who they inherently are

THE CARRIE DIARIES 2.02 ― "Express Yourself"
MEAN GIRLS (2004) dir. Mark Waters
“Flowers?” Fez’s eyebrows raised in disbelief. He’d passed the kitchen on his way in, and whilst he hadn’t taken the time to observe the decorations, he was almost certain he hadn’t seen a vase. She seemed desperate to defend herself though, so Fez didn’t question it further, not wanting to cause any upset as she scrambled for another lie. “Yeah, man. ‘Course I would,” he replied with a nod, glancing around as though the perpetrator was already present. It was his whole reason for attending in the first place, out of defence for his friends. Campbell needed to be taught a lesson for the way he was treating Sam, and it had to come from Fez, because he could handle the consequences. Coming from someone on the outside would scare him too, into stopping. “I can handle messy, yo. ‘Been doin’ that for life. Ain’t nothin’ I ain’t seen or dealt with before. What’s on your mind? I promise I won’t tell nobody nothin’, it stays between us.” He meant that, too. She was safe to confide in him if she wanted to.
“Yeah, Ash. He’s just a kid.” They both were, but that detail was lost on Fez. He hadn’t had a childhood, and if he was honest with himself, Ash hadn’t had one either. No matter how much he’d tried to change that, they couldn’t deny how they’d been raised. “I gotta’ be goin’ soon, I ain’t plannin’ on drinkin’ tonight. But I’d be up for it some other time, for sure.” It was a casual way in saying he wanted to see her again, knowing that his plans wouldn’t allow him to stay, despite the fact he now wanted to. Hopefully, she wouldn’t see what he had to do. He had a feeling she couldn’t handle his violent streak, even if it was for a just cause. He wouldn’t have the time to explain himself afterwards either. “Name’s Fez.” He smiled, holding a hand out in introduction. “Can I like — get your number or somethin’?”
Although it was obvious the man didn’t believe her lie, Chloe nodded in response nonetheless, and to her amazement, he stopped pressing her on it. For that, she was truly grateful. She was too vulnerable right then to keep up the act forever, and he’d already begun to make her crack. Her nod had become an unwritten contract between them, an agreement to let his suspicion slide until she was ready to face the truth — if that day ever came. Continually amazed by his behaviour, she blinked at him in surprise, clearing the fresh tears in the process. “But - why?” Chloe would do the same for her friends, of course, but they’d only just met. He didn’t owe her a thing. And since she didn’t see his behaviour as flirting, now worlds away from her usual interactions with men, she couldn’t understand his reasoning. He didn’t seem to be showing off or talking a big game — in fact, he seemed entirely relaxed. His presence was actually calming, though she wasn’t in the space to focus on that, as the more she tried, the quicker she realised she was struggling to read him, and it was starting to become frustrating.
At his offer, Chloe looked away again, unsure how to proceed. She shouldn’t, as it didn’t make any sense, but somehow, she did feel she could trust him. Everything in her told her so. But she was still unsure who he was and how he fit into the social pecking order, and had no idea if her gut feeling was something to even be trusted, so ultimately, Chloe stuck to self-preservation and held her tongue. No point dragging her and Luke’s relationship into the limelight where it could potentially be regurgitated by her peers. She’d deal with it on her own, like she always did. She’d never been good at reading signs or trusting her instincts, and considering the man next to her already had her questioning both, she ran in the opposite direction, unnerved. “S'alright,” she attempted another smile, trying to be convincing. “It’s really nothin’, not even worth talkin’ about. I appreciate that though, really. I’ll remember that.” She’d certainly be spiralling about their interaction for a while, anyway.
“A kid?” Chlo tilted her head, confused, but figured he must still mean a teen, just one that was younger than him. “He’s your little brother, then? Adorable. You do seem like the big brother type,” she grinned. The expression faded, however, as Fezco continued on, her mood plummeting instantly. “Oh.” So he wasn’t going to stay, then. Eventually, she nodded. “Alrigh’, yeah. Sure,” her reply was half-hearted, convinced he was only being polite now. She figured this was her fault, for not opening up earlier, but she hadn’t trusted herself to, especially not in an environment like the one they were in. She found it even more unbelievable that he hadn’t been drinking, and wondered if that was a lie, but her thought spiral was cut off by his gesture, and question.
Chloe blinked down at his extended hand, genuinely unsure what he wanted at first. Eventually, and with great embarrassment, she realised he really was just being polite. Awkwardly, she returned the handshake, a small smile lifting her cheeks. She supposed she appreciated his formality; most men would’ve left her in the lurch without another word. He, at least, was letting her down gently. Although, she had to admit, the question made her wonder otherwise. “Deffo, yeah, that’s - totally fine.” Flustered now, Chloe reached for her phone before handing it over to him. “Here. Maybe you can like, text yourself?”
Fez would be lying to claim he wasn’t confused by her response, unsure what the actual problem was, considering she’d only half admitted it. The rest of her answer was covered by what appeared to be an extension of her first lie. “Yeah, what kinda’ allergies you got? ‘Cause last I checked there ain’t no cats in here, and you ain’t eatin’ nothin’.” He raised his eyebrows, pursuing his attempt at getting her to open up. “Boys can be boys, fo’ sure. Don’t mean they have to be assholes. Someone said somethin’ to you or what? ‘Cause if they have… I can do somethin’. Have a word, or whatever.”
Fez wasn’t sure what to believe, but at least she’d appeared to stop crying. “’Course we do, that’s what I’m sayin’. Don’t hide that shit. Whatever it is.” His eyes never left her, trying to read her, but it was hard when this was their first interaction. Fez had never been the greatest judge of character, seeing the best in everyone. As far as he was concerned, they were all people suffering in their own ways. Better to help one another, than dismiss eachother’s struggles.
Of course Fez noticed her leg, he wasn’t blind, and she was a beautiful girl. But he’d rather get to know her, first, and peel back the layers of her personality. “Waitin’ for my brother, he’s in the other room.” Now he was being dishonest, because Ash was the one waiting for the signal. Campbell hadn’t arrived yet, though, so he continued with his line of questioning. “What’s your name then? ‘Ain’t see you around before.”
Heat crept into her cheeks at the line of questioning, feeling desperate to protect whatever reputation she’d earnt herself so far this year. Her and Luke’s relationship had only gotten worse since moving, and she’d had to stand alone, try and forge connections. It was near impossible when everyone around her was seemingly better at everything, some not even human — but still, crying at parties couldn’t end up being what she was known for.
“Erm, flowers. There’s some in the kitchen somewhere. You didn’t see ‘em?” Lying was in the details, and Chloe was crap at those. She looked at him then, really looked, when he said he’d defend her. “You would do that?” Her voice was softer, quieter than it had been, the words almost lost amongst the thumping music. A total stranger, and he would look out for her? The thought brought some tears back to her eyes, still in a vulnerable state. Looking away in embarrassment, she blinked, trying to be subtler this time now that she knew he was watching. “S’alright, though. It’s… a bit of a mess, really. No point you gettin’ involved in tha’.” Yet Chloe longed to confide in someone about it. Her parents adored Lucas, and though she’d reconnected with Mandy, revealing the truth about her seemingly perfect relationship when they were family friends felt impossible. She’d been left with no-one.
Don’t hide that shit. Without thinking, she nodded in agreement to his statement despite behaving in the exact opposite way. But as she pressed her lips together in thought, she realised she wanted to actually agree. She wished she was the kind of person who could wear her heart on her sleeve, and everyone would respect it. But she wasn’t. She wasn’t popular enough, loved enough to do that.
Focusing on getting his attention in another way now, Chloe tried not to feel disheartened that he wasn’t reacting the way she’d hoped. It’s not that she wanted anything to happen, she just craved a bit of attention, the kind she was familiar with. “Aw, you have a brother? That’s ace. I can go and get ‘im if ya like? Maybe get us a drink, too?” She asked, twirling her hair with her finger. “I’m Chloe. Gemmell. You?”
Fez shook his head in disagreement, not satisfied with her response. “Nah man. I know I don’t know you or nothin’ but I can tell this ain’t allergies. You look hurt.” It wasn’t any of his business, but he hated seeing anybody upset. If he could at least make her smile, genuinely smile, by the end of their conversation, he’d feel better. He hoped that she would, too. “I’m sorry I ain’t got like a tissue or whatever. If you wanna’ use my sleeve or somethin’ it’s cool. Don’t be embarrassed though, for real. You feel what you feel.”
For a few moments, she gaped at him. On top of everything else, Chloe felt stunned. She hadn’t expected a total stranger to take interest in her for one, especially considering how gross she must’ve looked right then, but also to contradict her. He’d called her out, and he’d been incredibly considerate about it, which left her feeling confused. The more her walls were lowered, the more defensive Chloe got, trying to save face; but she also felt a stronger sense of comfort because of it. It was like he’d gotten through before she’d managed to block him out.
Sniffling, she tried for another smile, unsure how to navigate her response. “Well… maybe. It was allergies a bit. I dunno, really. Nothin’ I can’t handle, though. Boys will be boys, right?” She attempted to joke, to relate to him, but her laugh fell short. This was a lot more than a boy problem, but it was the least personal explanation. “Nah, thanks, but I couldn’t. I’ve already ruined my own top, and - a friend's. I don’t wan’ to ruin yours, too!” She waved him off, sliding her fingers under her eyes another few times to dry the tears there. They’d stopped falling now, the longer she was distracted. “But I’m not embarrassed,” she was quick to correct him, eyebrows raised as she looked away, despite that being an obvious lie. Chloe couldn’t quite meet his eyes. “Everybody has… allergies. And feelings an’ all that are great, totally. I agree.”
Feeling she had to change the subject or he’d never drop it, she cleared her throat, composing herself now. It was showtime. Chloe crossed one leg over the other, making sure to expose leg, turning towards him. “So, whatcha doin’ sittin’ over here all alone, then?”
Fez had only attended the party to settle a debt with Campbell, but he had to wait for the right time. He’d finally had enough of him hurting his friends, which included Campbell’s own brother Sam. Fez couldn’t comprehend how someone could be so cruel to their own family, and he’d decided a lesson needed to be taught to avoid further insult. It wasn’t until the blonde sat down beside him that Fez realised he hadn’t planned a way to pass the time, but perhaps this was it. She seemingly didn’t notice him, but he certainly saw her, and the hand that wiped a damp spot off her cheek. “Yo, hey. What’s wrong? Ain’t this suppos’ to be a party?”
Chloe nearly leapt out of her skin when she realised she was being addressed, and watched. So much for subtle. How had she not noticed the hot guy on the couch? Immediately wiping away stray tears, she tried to laugh it off, insecurities raging now that she’d been caught at her most vulnerable; and by an attractive stranger, of all people. The silver lining is she was sure he wouldn’t press her, even if the lie was obvious. She just had to stifle the urge to sob. “Oh, absolutely, it is, yeah. But I’m totally fine, thanks for askin’. Just allergies, y’know? Kinda embarrassin’ when it hits at times like this.“
FRIENDS 6.22
“Thank you. See, someone agrees!” JJ shouted out, throwing his arms up and gesturing around himself. Nobody seemed to engage with his overreaction though, so he shrugged, and turned back to the girl who’d addressed him.
“Wait — no. They didn’t. Are we actually supposed to have one of those?” JJ’s eyebrows pressed together in confusion, although he supposed it made sense, considering the size of the school. “See, they’re already puttin’ me at a disadvantage. I’m about two seconds from walking out of this place.”
Chloe chuckled at his outburst, shaking her head in wonder. His behaviour reminded her of Lucas, but it was in a nice way. On his good days, even his manic ones, he’d always be talking about injustice, and getting everyone’s attention. Oddly, she felt nostalgic about it. “Alright, you weirdo. No need to shout the walls down,” she grinned. “Who are you even talkin’ to?”
“Well, to be honest, I don’t really know, ‘cause I was already here when the school opened, so we didn’t need anyone. But you weren’t, so it only feels fair, right?” Chloe shrugged, though she knew she’d already won him over. It hadn’t been hard, considering he was already unhappy with how things were going. “Wait, hang on - don’t go,” she reached out, holding his arm for a moment. Studying him, she wondered what her new group of friends would make of him. They’d probably be far from impressed, but right then, she didn’t really care. The fact he came off more dishevelled than her could only do wonders for her image. “I can do it. I’ll be your buddy.”
