the argument hadn’t even been anything serious. that’s what you wanted to believe. it wasn’t that big of a deal, you kept telling yourself.
you stood in front of rin’s bedroom door, your hand resting on the doorknob, trembling slightly. you hesitated for a few seconds before opening it.
the sight that greeted you left you frozen.
rin was standing there, the sleeve of his sweater rolled up. his posture, his breathing… something was wrong. very wrong.
you stood completely still. stiller than you had ever been in your entire life.
rin noticed your presence a second later. he looked up, startled, and immediately covered his arm.
you didn’t know what to do. swallowing was the only thing you could manage.
you slowly approached him.
“rin… what…?” you murmured, but you couldn’t even finish the sentence.
he looked away, his jaw tightening.
the argument stopped mattering instantly. everything else disappeared.
“it’s nothing,” he said, almost inaudibly. “you don’t have to worry.”
you didn’t believe him. but you didn’t argue with him either.
“…rin,” you said more quietly, as if any extra words might break something.
silence fell between the two of you again. heavy, uncomfortable.
you stayed there, a few steps away, not really knowing what to do, but not wanting to leave either.
“okay,” you murmured eventually, even though it clearly wasn’t. “i won’t… push you.”
you took another slow step closer.
you sat down near him, leaving a little space between the two of you. your hands rested on your knees for a few seconds before moving hesitantly.
“can i…?” you started, not finishing the sentence as you gestured faintly toward his arm.
he nodded and hesitantly rolled up his sleeve.
“shit,” you whispered. even though they weren’t that deep, you were still worried. you carefully took his arm in your hands, making sure not to touch the fresh wounds. “i’m going to get something to clean them, okay?” you added quietly.
you left the room for a few seconds and returned with what you needed. rin was still sitting in the same place, his gaze fixed somewhere on the floor.
you sat down beside him again.
rin obeyed without saying a word.
silence settled between the two of you as you tended to him. neither of you seemed to know what to say.
after a few seconds, you spoke.
rin’s shoulders tensed slightly.
“we don’t have to talk about that right now,” you clarified immediately. “i just wanted you to know that i’m still here.”
you knew that wasn’t true.
this time, you didn’t argue.
“okay,” you murmured. “you don’t have to be fine right now.”
your fingers paused for a moment before reaching for his hand.
rin took a few seconds to respond.
finally, he intertwined his fingers with yours.
