Dirk is a control freak(narrative control), while John is the embodiment of freedom(retcon). Immovable Object and Unstoppable Force. They're both the leaders of their respective friend groups and they failed.
Dirk and John's only interaction
This scene is their reaction to the situation. They mirror each other. They're too late to save anyone and were emotionally repressed. Felling purposeless, Dirk lost everything we worked so hard to get(meet his friends) , he kills himself. John has nothing to lose (saw all his friends die too many times), he leaves him alone and moves along.
Everyone also don't seem how Dirk's self blame have impacted John a few pages later.
John, being the hero he is, takes the blame Dirk put on himself.
And speaking of panels. Here's some that shows Dirk and John are indirectly affecting each other.
If John hadn't pushed Roxy away, Dirk wouldn't have returned her out of the dream bubble.
Dirk and John are the two characters who affected Caliborn mentally, Dirk trolling him with "porn", that also lead to John (physically) beating him up for said "porn". (Cherubs mate that way.)
John is doing the anime protagonist clench fist. (Very anime)(Dirk would love looking at this nerd.)
They understood each other, just by observing their older counterparts, more than anyone else did. (Dirk feels like he badly wants to put Poppop under a microscope.)
Asked about each other then tried to mention a different friend to lose suspicion. (It's so fucking funny.)(Losers.)
Symbolic deaths parallels.
John gets impaled in the chest (his heart), Dirk gets decapitated (cutting off his mind from his body, as well as cut off his breath), both 2 times.
Even Bro and Poppop have the opposite death parallels.
In conclusion: Dirk and John should make out.
