The problem is not knowing what to write about. Daisy, from Spaced, is as good a visual example as any. There is a scene where she is trying to write with all of her might and yet she struggles with the very first sentence. As a lover of literature and all things imagined the idea of whipping out fistfuls of characters is as appealing as it is stumping. Whims are bastards too. A good book will leave me craving more, even if every character is dead and every storyline expertly dissected and stitched back up. I always find myself most motivated to write after finishing a story and that's exactly the sort of motivation that slapped 50 Shades across our unsuspecting faces. I don't want to emulate, I want to create. There's one character that I'm rather fond of, called Howard, and he's mine. I love him because he's a little bit of everything I've read, and a whole lot of everything I've not. He's no vampire-come-billionaire sadist. He's hardly exceptional, perpetually baffled, introspective (thus his bafflement), confused, and just curious enough to overcome his exceptional certainty that it's probably best not to split up, let alone look for clues. I just don't know what to do with him. I love reality, I love fantasy, and I love everything in between. I'm a reader, after all. Couple he be magic? Maybe he IS, but doesn't know it! *pauses for sea of gasps and heavens'* Maybe he's lost but on the brink of self discovery. MAYBE he is the catalyst that leads to lots of other characters finding fulfilment, and whilst he remains adrift he takes comfort from his accidental good deeds. Essentially, I've not a clue. Maybe he'll remain a figment, but I hope not.
