Have you ever looked at someone and felt like you were looking into the sun? That's my first memory of meeting my best friend for the very first time, on an overcast December 26th at about two in the afternoon. She came out back to find me as I waited for my luggage, and when she saw me she hurried forward and pulled me into a tight hug. Even in the dismal weather, her bright blue eyes were completely luminescent. Her smile, the way she looked at me, her adorable scarf and coat... but the way her eyes shone, the way they reflected the blue sky we deserved? That will always be with me.
We drove back to her city and talked the whole way. It felt normal. It felt natural. I was shy, of course, but it wasn't so bad - considering some of the things we talk about on a daily basis, I had no reason to be nervous. The trip was long, but it was fun, and I loved it. We stopped at McDonald's, because neither of us had eaten, and then we went back to her apartment.
It was big. Jesus, her flat is HUGE. and GORGEOUS. Like her bathroom is TWO of mine. It's probably the size of the only bedroom in my house. There was a small tree with beautiful ornaments and white lights, there were little coloured lights strung along the ceiling, there was silver snowflake garland and a stocking for me and it was just beautiful. I stepped inside, and it felt like home.
We kicked off the trip by exchanging gifts (she got us GOT necklaces- mine says 'my sun and stars', her name for me, and her says 'moon of my life', my name for her - and her mother made me mittens and a scarf that match my eyes. I got her a John Bun to match my Jim Bun, a purple crochet scarf, and a Slytherin mug) and watching Once Upon a Time. We took turns snuggling up to one another - she lay on me first, head in my lap as I draped an arm over her shoulder. At some point we switched, with my laying my head on her lap while she played with my hair. It was peaceful. It was quiet. I made pizza rolls later, and we vowed to go shopping for groceries the next day. At the end of the night (somehow we stayed up til our usual time) we blew up the air mattress and I curled up with my bun, and we fell asleep.
Shopping was fast and fun, but we couldn't get alcohol for new years - I left my ID back at the apartment. Instead we got snacks and meals to last my time there, as well as chicken for me to cook for us and drinks like tea. The OUAT marathon continued.
That's how we rolled - movies and television, roleplaying together and with others as we sat bundled up on the sofa. We went out for food, we went out for haircuts, and we shopped again when Sarah arrived, but that was it. It was a perfect way to spend our vacation :)
Nothing in the world compares to the sound of your best friend's laughter, especially when you can hear them giggle at jokes or get a quick little hug when they're especially pleased by something you said. Just being near her was incredible, but telling jokes and talking about paranormal experiences until 7 AM? That's just magical.
