This is beautiful.
Lioness, meet cow. Cow, lioness. I believe this will be a one-sided relationship.
Elephant Day!
We spend today at a couple of game reserves - Addo and Schotia. I believe the resulting photos will be powerful.
Students, and monkeys, hanging out on the NMMU "quad" during lunchtime.
A taste of some of the "farm" mountaintop imagery.
This morning saw a beautiful sunrise, followed by monkeys on campus. Oh, yes.
A good morning.
The guitar at the farm where the women are staying is a sister instrument to my dad’s guitar, which I now have. Funny how things like that hit you…how I hope a little bit of him is here with me. I wonder if he ever thought that his son would be co-leading a class in South Africa. I imagine not, but I also would like to think that he would not be surprised that I am doing so.
It's a post-production kind of morning...
Tonight we are attending the premiere of a South African film - Of Good Report - followed by a conversation with the producer.
For a second there I thought I was studying abroad...but I guess I'm still on NKU's campus.
Josh cooked out tonight. Chicken and venison sausage. Very tasty.
When a society emerges from something as horrific as apartheid, and is dealing with the aftermath of that every day, it touches all aspects of life…including jazz music, as this lecture is showing.
Back at it - Monday May 19
We kick off Monday with a lecture on the political landscape of South Africa followed by a master class with a jazz professor. Unfortunately, a couple folks overslept so we were unable to acquire coffee…which would be very, very nice today after being out late last night to watch the Pacers win. (The game ended after midnight here.) Should have more time on campus, which will allow for a more solid internet connection.
The students appear to be gathering good footage, and have been dedicated to the five projects. We hope to start consolidating and assembling the stories over the next couple of days, before we travel to stay in a township and then to the farm. Hopefully we’ll be able to post segments or snippets on the class blog this week.
Sunday, part one
Watching an American version of a Japanese movie while in South Africa. Very meta.
