Curiosity Equipped with iPhone 5, Usage Crippled by Lack of Cell Coverage
NASA released a statement this morning revealing that the Mars rover Curiosity is equipped with an iPhone 5. Disappointingly, the press release also states that the planned Facetime call has been postponed, awaiting cell service from AT&T. Apple CEO Tim Cook was available for a phone interview, where he described the situation as "Business as usual for the service provider." Cook went on to say "Problems like these have been the AT&T's M.O. since Day One." Apple has had its [fair share of problems with AT&T](http://www.forbes.com/2010/06/22/iphone-mobile-internet-technology-cio-network-apple.html). Many of these problems were eased back in 2011 when Verizon started offering the cell phone to consumers, and competition to AT&T. [NASA Administrator Charles Bolden's Blog](http://blogs.nasa.gov/cm/blog/bolden/posts/post_1344232802884.html) talks about Curiosity's landing and a small blurb about the iPhone. "We were extremely disappointed to learn that we weren't able to make our phone call home using the new iPhone 5." "Not only were we not able to make a connection to a 3G network, we weren't even able to get a signal on the EDGE network of yesteryear." "... There's just so much about the planet Mars that we don't know," Bolden continued, "it would be nearly impossible for us to have foreseen this problem. My heart goes out to Curiosity. We all know how difficult she can be. Now imagine how frustrating that b**** would be without a connection to the internet." AT&T was not available for comment. --- Sources: [NASA](http://blogs.nasa.gov/cm/blog/bolden/posts/post_1344232802884.html), [Forbes](http://www.forbes.com/2010/06/22/iphone-mobile-internet-technology-cio-network-apple.html), and [Wikipedia on what M.O. actually means](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modus_operandi)
