There were very few things that annoyed Lacey more than locking herself out of her apartment. It was even worse when it was already dark outside and any attempt to get back inside by helping herself to it was going to look like she was breaking into the place because how in hell would anyone explain that? It was too bad that she currently found herself in that exact situation: kneeling in front of her door while trying to unlock the door with bobby pins. She was in the middle of her attempt when she heard someone come up behind her. Without turning around, she explained, “Listen, I know what this looks like but I swear I’m not trying to break in.”
Chrissy was admittedly already paranoid as she stepped out of her friend’s new apartment and into the wild that was Rosmont. No, Rosmont wasn’t that bad, as Chrissy had been reminding herself that every few minutes for the past two hours. But after years of shifted gazes and words spoken a little too gently about Rosmont by those around her, Chrissy’s impression of the place had already been formed. That was why she had come today, after all---to remind herself, and her newly moved in friend, that Rosmont was not as terrible a place as they’d been brought up to believe it was. With some fresh artwork on the walls and all the furniture assembled, an apartment in Rosmont, they’d discovered, was just like an apartment anywhere else.
Those affirmations subsided as Chrissy stepped closer to one of her friend’s new neighbors. Her steps slowed until she was all but on top of the girl, who she eyed with both suspicion and nervousness. That didn’t change when she spoke.
“Um... Okay?” Chrissy started, not wanting to pick a fight if it wasn’t necessary. On the other hand, what if she was enabling a robbery? “Are you--- I’m sorry, can I help you somehow?” she offered timidly.
