Tumblr destroys quality but here's the finished work for my newest teifling! She's based off of peacock feathers and stained glass work.
GMs: What's a rule/mechanic you've stolen from one game and use in almost every game you run?
One of mine is Dungeon Crawl Classic's "Recovering the body" rule - in which dead PCs have a chance of quite dramatically NOT being dead and instead being barely alive and wounded when the other PCs go to recover the body. It makes for such a fun final roll for the character and can have a wonderfully dramatic and exciting payoff if the roll goes well. Plus, because it's a "may" rule it gives the player a chance to say "No, I think Alfred the Wise dies here. It's a fitting end." and it's only utilized when they want that exciting maybe final moment with the character.

The Flesh Halo Imagery
(Warning csm spoilers)
The flesh/brain halo Makima forms in the later chapter of csm, has immense symbolism. Though it appears for two panels, it nevertheless creates an intense impact.
The halo is extracted from a strand of brain muscle. As we know, the brain is the source/center of one's knowledge, intelligence and wit. This symbolizes how Makima had achieved her dark holiness/Godhood using her own wit/cunning/intelligence. The fact that blood spurts out and is taken from a visceral manner, also implies the bloodshed and bodies mercilessly slayed for her to achieve her goals/ambitions.
In the series, we have seen the Devils take on monstrous form, yet never Makima's. This halo reveals that Makima doesn't need a grotesque or inhumane form to strike fear/terror in the hearts of readers.
Interesting to note is how she's wearing a halo, a sign of an Angel, moreso than God. Important to note is how Angels are not only viewed as messengers of God, but also harbingers of the Apocalypse. Makima also represents this as she carries/carried out inhumane, merciless destruction. This not only alarms the reader, but also how her Divinity is simply a ruse-that she's not God, simply an image and can be destroyed.
Interesting to note, is her modest expression, almost as if she's surprising happy judging from her closed eyes in the first panel and closed lipped smile in the later- almost as she herself didn't expect to reach this point, but is pleasantly happy that she did. for the readers, In many literary works, the antagonist receives sublime enjoyment/success, just before the downfall. This is Makima's peak, her plan almost completely accomplished.
Yet even here there's a sense of loneliness-especially the backdrop of the sea-as if she's on a stranded island. This showcases how Makima has also further isolated herself from connecting with others, byt reaching this dark, Divine imitation state.
Your Dread Lord and Master, Strahd von Zarovich
[ID. An illustrated circular token of Strahd von Zarovich against a dark blue background. He has pale skin, red eyes, pointed ears and straight black hair with a few streaks of grey. He has defined cheekbones and wrinkles under the eyes, and he has a smirking expression. Beneath his armor, fur mantle and blue cape, he wears a red tunic with blue-grey trim and gold clasps inlaid with rubies. End ID.]
