Haikyuu Bu!! - Chapter 94 (I)
āVisiting Sakusa Kiyoomi!ā š¦
Iām rereading THG (or rather, listening to the audiobooks again) now that I have a concussion (shhh, itās healing so Iām allowed to have my phone), and itās so very clear now, as an adult, that Katniss would always choose Peeta in the end. She does choose Gale at the right moments, yes, but the whole Peeta=peace/the good in humanity and Gale=war/rage metaphor is so much more obvious 8 years after my first reading.
In addition to the metaphor, however, Iād argue that Katniss and Peeta have such great chemistry outside of their need for one another. She says several times in the lead up to their first games that he looks āstrikingā or āstunningā or just handsome. Peeta obviously adores her. And the two work well together, balance one another out, find security in each other, and have some real moments of genuine love and attraction even on camera.
I think this (and her generally strong maternal instincts, love for family, etc.) kind of just automatically invalidate the arguments that Katniss should have ended up alone and childless. Those arguments thematically and contextually just donāt make sense. Of course, if anyone wants to headcanon Katniss as ace, I donāt want to say that those headcanons shouldnāt exist or that they donāt matter! Itās more that it frustrates me when people say that she *should* have stayed alone (outside of s3xuality headcanons), because the entire point of the end of mockingjay is that, when Katniss finally gets to live for *herself* in a safe and secure world, she *chooses* to love and have a family of her own. Itās such a great commentary on how, if everyone had their basic physical and emotional needs met, many would feel more comfortable with having children or finding love than they do currently (minus those who are child free for other reasons).
Also apologies if anyone dislikes the censoring of some words; Iām on TikTok usually, and after the tumblr ban on certain content, Iām being extra cautious!!

Late Night Stories Vol. 09 Marco Bott "A Story of Standing Strong"
Thump. A stick fell to the ground. Of the Training Corps members surrounding the lantern inside the tent, the stick now pointed atā¦
"Okay, Marco. It's your turn to tell a story today. You're normally a pretty serious guy, so you'd better say something interesting this one time, at least."
While the exhaustion was building from the multi-day training march, it was still too early to sleep. The Training Corps soldiers had time to kill, and now they all focused on the kind-looking young man.
"What? You can't put me on the spot like this, I don't know what to say! An interesting story"
"You should at least have a few stories ready to go. You might need to entertain some nobles once you become an MP, you know," Jean said. Marco crossed his arms.
"Hmm⦠Okay, well, I don't know if this is interesting or not, butā¦" he began. "You know they put the squads for this exercise together by talking to the recruits with the highest commanding aptitude during the last test."
"Yeah, and I dropped the ball on that test, which is why I wasn't a part of making the squads. Thanks to that, not only Reiner not here, I'm stuck in the same squad as a suicide bastard like Eren."
"What was that? Who'd you just call suicide!"
While Armin would normally stop Eren here, he was away, in the same squad as the physically tough Reiner. Instead, Marco continued speaking and got in between the two recruits who now glared at one another.
"That was all part of my plan. But reallyā¦I think I should have made a more selfish decision if I wanted to become an MP."
******
"What do you mean, a more selfish decision?" a confused Connie asked, his head cocked as he listened on.
"You idiot. He had the chance to choose his own squad! Normally he wouldn't put himself with an idiot like you or troublemakers like me and Erenā¦wait, Marco, really?!"
Just as Jean explained the meaning of the words, he realized that Marco was being considerate of all of them, including himself. He involuntarily raised his voice.
Marco nodded, folded his arms, and looked into the lantern's flame.
"The other submitted squads that were favourable to themā¦but I thought of the overall balanceā¦and made a squad where I thought everyone would be able to grow."
******
Though Jean and Eren tended to butt heads, they were about evenly matched in skill, which exactly why Marco wanted them to compete with one another inside the same squad. He would be able to shore up Connie's lack of tactical understanding, allowing him to focus on his mobility instead.
"And if there was a problem, I'd take full responsibility. I thought that would be the best thing to do."
"You're honest to a fault, you know thatā¦? You should've just picked a group of well-mannered recruits who wouldn't cause any problems from the start, even if it meant breezing through thisā¦"
"I understand that. But I just couldn't bring myself to do it." Marco smirked as he looked up. The two problem children in front of him, Eren and Jean, looked at one another before turning away with a hmph.
"Fine⦠We'll call a temporary cease-fire for your sake, Marco."
"You're the one picking a fight, anyway. Butā¦if that's what you say, Marco, I won't cause any trouble, either."
"I thought you'd say that."
Marco chuckled, then checked the pocket watch he'd been given before instructing the others to go to sleep.
"Okay, let's get straight to it. Eren and Jean, you two handle lookout duty. Wake us up when it's time to switch." He handed Eren the watch and Jean the lantern before sending the two out of the tent.
"ā¦I've heard from Armin that the Military Police is a completely rotten organization. You're one thing, Jean, but would it really be a good place for a softie like Marcoā¦?"
"What, are you trying to find faults with his dreams? And what do you mean by that"
"Listen, youā¦! Wait, let's not. For Marco."
The two held back their clenched and cocked fists before staring up at the night sky.

Late Night Stories Vol. 01 Jean Kirstein : A Story of Disappointment
Late at night, a languid atmosphere lingered in the air in the boys barracks. In front of each of the recruits surrounding a table was a thick textbook on tactics, along with a variety of notes.
āUgh⦠Iām so sleepyā¦ā Connie said as he rubbed his eyes.
āThis test is ridiculously difficult⦠Even Iām not close to finishing the materials,ā Reiner shrugged.
āThatās why weāre all here pulling an all-nighter. Youād better not sleep,ā Eren said, fighting back a yawn as he nudged Connie, who had his head in his hands. As Armin watched, he suddenly clapped.
āI know! Why donāt we all go around telling interesting stories so that we donāt fall asleep?ā
āYou want to tell interesting stories?ā Jean echoed. Armin smiled back at him.
āThatās right⦠For example, Jean, why donāt you tell us about a time you were disappointed?ā
āHunh? Why me?!ā
āI see⦠I might not fall asleep if we did that.ā
āGood idea. I want to hear that, too.ā
Though Jean was against the idea, he had no choice after all the others agreed. His shoulders fell.
āYou, too, Marco?! Ugh⦠Fine.ā
ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢
It happened when Jean went shopping with Marco. As part of their training duties, recruits had to calculate the food that would be needed during a fixed duration march, then go buy it.
āSo you went in your military uniforms?ā
āYeah. But Jean said prices would be high in towns, so we went to a nearby farming village.ā
While one could describe it as simply going shopping, this was actually an important part of their training that required a firm grasp on the many factors that went into a march.
āā¦And so, the shopping went fine. Butā¦ā
Jean sighed and looked up at the ceiling.
ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢
To the society inside the Walls, being a soldier meant having a stable job that allowed one to live off the peopleās taxes.
ā¦And so, to put it plainly, recruits were popular. The farmers and other young citizens of the village, both men and women, saw them as possible marriage partners who had promising futures.
Just as Jean and Marco finished shopping and had loaded their wagon, it happened.
āUm⦠These are for you.ā
A number of girls from the village handed them snacks. The two gave their thanks and took them without a second thought before opening the packages, butā¦
āā¦Huh? Whatās this letter?ā
āHm?! Thereās no letter in mine!ā
The bread that Marco had been given came with something extra, and it was clear to both of them what it wasā¦
ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢ā¢
āBfft⦠Haahaha! So no love letter for you, Jean?ā
The entire table burst into laughter, beginning with Reiner. Jean did everything he could to protest as they roared.
āDonāt laugh! It was our first time meeting them, you know! Whatās the big difference between me and Marco, anyway?!ā
āI have a feeling I know what it is. You look like a bad guy, Jean, and Marco seems like someone youād have a more stable life with.ā
āHey, whatād you just say about my face?!ā
As Armin tried to stifle his laughter and explain the workings of a womanās heart, Marco hopped in from the side to try to smooth things over, since he was the only other recruit involved in the story.
āItās okay. I turned them down by saying that I didnāt know if Iād be able to become a full-fledged soldier or not.ā
āAgain, why would you turn them down there?! It only makes it sting more!ā
The recruits laughed to one another, to the exclusion of a desperate Jean.
āAh, all that laughing woke me up⦠That was a good idea.ā
āI bet we could use it during camping training, too.ā
āIāll pick who tells the story next time!ā
āI like that idea,ā Armin smiled as he looked around. Now that his fellow recruits were awake, they began to switch gears and dig into their homework.
The night was far from over.

One more thing: since thereās no mention of Jeanās family other than his mother in the omelette episode (who we assume is alive since her death isnāt mentioned), Marco was Jeanās first big loss. Unlike many of the characters, he never experienced major grief, tragedy, and death growing up. And so while Erenās looking to avenge his mother (at least for the first 3 seasons š), Arminās looking to see what his parents always dreamed of seeing, and Mikasaās looking to protect her family after losing her parents, Jean doesnāt have those same forceful, painful losses driving him forward⦠until Marco. And just like the other characters, that death stays with him and motivates him through the entire series.
Iād also like to add that Jeanās grief feels so real. While the viewers didnāt see the entirety of the 104thās training period, those 3 years of friendship obviously meant something, and even then the longevity of a friendship doesnāt matter; if someone saw you for who you were and loved you for it, their death is bound to make a lifelong impact on you. Making Marcoās death repeatedly come back to Jean and his decisions feels so much realer than how most shounens seem to handle death of minor characters. You never forget about someone who died only to remember them for one last power up in the final battleāthose you lost stay with you, through the good and the bad and the years that stretch between you. So yeah, fuck anyone who argues that Marco wasnāt important or that he was boring.
One of my favorite ship dynamics is āI saw something in you before anyone else did.ā

Good Night, Dear and Sweet Dreams Vol. 06 Marco Bott
The brilliant music played as confetti filled the air. MP's dressed in full uniform both on foot and horseback formed columns, surrounding a luxurious carriage as they marched forward.
"Long live the King!"
"Look! The Military Police Brigade is coming through!"
The people's voices reverberated through the air. Marco looked out toward the town upon his horse in one of the columns.
"I'm so proud. I've been given the mission to protect the King."
"Haha! Being the center of attention isn't half bad, either."
Jean was on the horse next to him. Yes--they had both become MPsā¦
"You need to take this seriously, Jean."
"Yeah, I know. Ever the model student, aren't you, Marco?"
******
During a free moment between training when the recruits were heading toward their next gathering spot, Jean walked up to Marco, as usual.
"What's going on, Marco? You look like you're in a good mood."
"There was an article in this morning's paper that said the King held a parade in the capital. I wish I could've seen it," Marco answered with cheer in his voice. Armin grimaced as he followed behind them and spoke.
"ā¦The same newspaper had an article about small disputes breaking out over food. The parade is just a show meant to distract us."
"You don't have to put it that way, Armin!"
"Stop it, you guys," Eren said. He was with Armin and now played the role of mediator for a change. "All of this is happening because the Titans stole our land. Humanity's problems are never going to be solved unless we exterminate the Titans."
"The Kingā¦is doing his best, given the situation."
"I don't mean to say your loyalty to the crown is wrong. I'll just become a Survey Corpsman and exterminate the Titans, and you can become an MP and defend the King. That'll solve everything, right?"
As Eren accepted his squadmates' dreams and brushed aside their differences of opinion, Armin still stood next to him in thought.
"Will humanity really be savedā¦by just defeating the Titans?"
"It's fine, Armin. Let's go."
And so their conversation was brought to an end. Butā¦
******
Marco was there at the parade for the King he respected and loved as a member of the Military Police Brigade, a position he revered. It should have been a pleasant dream.
"Waaahhh⦠Daddyā¦"
A childā¦and they're crying?
"ā¦That child became an orphan because of the reclamation plan the Royal Government forced upon the people."
"What?!"
Marco thought he heard someone's voice and turned around to face it.
"That wasā¦"
The scene around him grew more and more hazy as the cheers became distant. Neither the Military Police nor the King rode alongside him now.
"Marco. Aren't there people other than the King you should be protecting with your power?"
"That voice⦠Is that you, Eren"
Shinning under a fluttering cape were--
The wingsā¦of freedom.
The scene changed completely into a strange mixture of city and rural plains. He could hear the rumble of what might have been footsteps, as well as cries for help.
Who is itā¦that I should be protecting ā¦?!
******
"Mmgh⦠Iā¦"
"I said wake up, Marco!"
Marco was shaken awake.
"ā¦Huh? Jean? What about the paradeā¦?"
"Hm? What're you talking about?"
Marco got up to see that he was in the training barracks, as usual.
"ā¦Sorry. I was having a dream."
"Oh. Yeah, you were groaning in your sleep. Was it a nightmare?"
"ā¦I don't know."
He could clearly recall the dream.
Butā¦I'm serious about wanting to become an MPā¦
Marco looked down, unable to fully process his feelings of almost losing his adoration for the position he had so longed for.
Why would I dream that?
"Anyway, hurry up. You don't want to give up your chance to become an MP all because you were tardy, right?"
"Y⦠Yeah. I know."
The boy's uncertainty sank into the bottom of his heart, still fully formed.

Good Night, Dear and Sweet Dreams Vol. 08 Jean Kirstein
It was a restless night.
"Jean. ā¦Jean. Are you up?"
"Hm? Yeahā¦"
Jean turned over in his bed and stuck his head out of his blankets. He saw the same barracks as always.
The quiet voice continued to call him.
"Sorry, did I wake you?"
"I was up⦠I couldn't sleep. What about you? It's rare for you to be up."
"Well, it happens every now and then."
"What happenedā¦Marco?"
******
"It's not like anything in particular happened, but⦠You know, we went through a lot in Trost District."
"You're right. Who knows how it could have turned out if it wasn't for Armin's plan and that suicide bastard's powers," the voice chuckled.
"You did a lot too, Jean. If it wasn't for your orders when our supplies got cut off, Mikasa would have been eaten after charging toward that Titan by herself."
"That wasā¦just something I decided I needed to do. It could have just as easily been you."
"But you were the one who ended up doing it in reality," the voice replied. It was as soft and kind as it could be.
"I know you'll make a good Survey Corpsman, Jean."
"Huh? If you're saying that, then what about you? You'd--"
What was he going to do?
Jean tried searching through his foggy mind to recall where his kind conversation partner was going to go.
******
He felt a prick in his heart.
Marco⦠That's right, an MPā¦He's going to become an MP.
"Well, I--"
"Oh, I know. You're going to be an MP, right? You've always been saying that. Go out there and protect the King, I know you'll be able to do it."
Jean continued to speak in rapid succession, trying to get out every word he could without so much as waiting for a response. It was as if they were chains that would tie down the man he spoke to, keeping him from leaving.
"Jean."
"It's okay, I guarantee you'll rise up the ranks, and you'll be ableā¦toā¦liveā¦a safe life in the Interior ā¦"
Jean began to gasp what was happeningā¦
But he also knew that a full grasp on the situation would bring an end to this warm discussion. A shiver ran through his entire body. The barracks seemed to distort before his eyes.
"No, don't go yet."
Jean reached out in the direction he spoke, but it was no good. He didn't want to believe it, he wanted this to be his reality, it should be reality--
"ā¦I wish we could keep talking. Butā¦"
"No, don't disappear! Marco, you idiot!!"
******
Jean leapt awake, drenched in sweat. The feeling of perspiration dripping onto the tip of his nose made it undeniable that this was reality.
"Dammitā¦!"
He cursed his still-shaking hands and grabbed one wrist with his other hand, forcing the tremors to stop. There was a dim brightness outside, and everyone around him still slept quietly. They would be asked what branch of the military they wanted to join today. The others must have been up until late struggling with the question before falling sound asleep.
The empty beds stood out in particular--those of their fallen corpsmates. And among themā¦
"Marco⦠Why⦠Why did you have toā¦"
Though Jean hung his head, he did not cry. He could hear someone inside of his heart telling him to hold his head high.
"ā¦That's right. I made a decision. My willā¦is going to choose what I need to do now."
Jean clenched a determined fist in the barely lit barracks. He felt as though the afterglow of his warm dream pushed him onward.
