a fandom mashup + character design sheet done once again by yours truly! this time i mixed ashita no joe with hollow knight/silksong!! i really loved doing these designs and i hole you all love them too and the decisions put behind them :)
all the characters in order from left to right:
joe: a hornet. his design was inspired by a common yellow jacket. he is the smallest out of all the characters, and his wings have been torn off. the fact he isnt bigger or mightier looking like the other bugs is symbolic to show how people dont suspect him to fight well. the little cuffs on his wrist symbolizes the wrist bands of boxing gloves (and the same goes for all the other boxers, except for rikiishi)
danpei: a beetle. inspired by a hercules beetle. hes just your generic old hunched over mentor! i decided to give him a crack through his skull into his eye to symbolize his lost eye and eyepatch, along with other scars he has along his face.
carlos: also a hornet! his design was inspired by a western hornet, and the reasoning for him being the same species as joe was due to the fact they both bond heavily over the fact they are both so similar to one another. i wanted him to look much flashier to show more of his entertainment side of fighting, as well as a golden shell husk to represent a hat :) his color pallet is also loosely based off the Venezuelan flag!
yoko: a mantis. her design was inspired by an orchid mantis. i wanted her design to reflect some sort of luxury and elegance, shes just the same old yoko!
rikiishi: a mantis. his design was inspired by a boxing mantis, i felt as though those bugs really represented him. rikiishi is one of the tallest bugs in the group alongside jose
jose: a dragonfly. his design was inspired by the emperor dragonfly, which is extremely symbolic to the fact he is the world champion, as well as being adorned with a sort of leafy cloak to represent status. he is also the second tallest tying with rikiishi, also symbolizing how big of an obstacle/goal he is for joe like rikiishi once was for him as well. his colors are also loosely based on the mexican flag
nishi: a pill bug. his design is inspired by the giant emerald pillbug, and i feel like in the universe his title would be “goliath nishi”, but hes also just the same old big nishi!
noriko: a butterfly. norikos design inspirations were originally all over the place, because i used a reference of a moth and then switched it off to a random butterfly, so there werent any specific features taken from any which butterfly or moth to make her design. i gave her an apron and a bowl of fruits to symbolize she is still a shop keeper in this universe, and i based her colors around a specific outfit she wears. her wings are long and drape over her silhouette like a cloak, and her antennae curl behind her head and down over her shoulders to symbolize her braids :)
