˗ˏˋ ★ Welcome to the VERY official "Who's-Your-HSR-Yandere" test!
☆ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
Hello, hello~
Just as the title says, I bring you a 45-question test to find out which of the HSR guys would be the perfect match for you as a yandere! (In case you're interested in the Genshin equivalent of this, that can be found right here!)
✩ A quick forewarning! Although this is a very tongue-in-cheek kind of a post (as is the test, this was very close to getting the shitpost tag), be mindful of its contents! As is with nearly all my other works, there might be some upsetting themes in the test, and I'll list them here!
Content warnings include: GN!Reader (BUT there are a few gender-leaning descriptions like "queen" and "bihh", and the guys will be called woman respecters, but nothing beyond that!), the general atmosphere that comes with yandere content (possessiveness, obsessiveness, imprisonment...), suggestive content (but nothing explicit), very vague implications of violence, and soul-crushingly bad humour.
⋆˙⟡ ⋆.˚ ⊹₊⟡ ⋆
˗ˏˋ ★ The PASSWORD to the test is "GiveMeMyYan" without the quotation marks (remember capitalization)! You can find the link to it riiiight about...
✩ (It's supposed to be a star, but the font fucks it up on mobile. Phone users, please visualize like a really big star with the link in the middle.)
⋆˙⟡ ⋆.˚ ⊹₊⟡ ⋆
☆ Hey-hey-hey, deal offer: You do the test, and then you go check out my work for who you got, mm-mh? There's at least one (1) piece of writing for each result, pinky-promise!!!
☆ The test will ask you to put your name in; literally keyboard-smash it if you'd like, BUT if you're my regular reader (or a new one, I don't discriminate!), my moot or anyone really, I'm lowkey dying to know who you got, so if you're an emoji anon, for example, put your emoji in for lil' old me, pretty please ( •̯́ ₃ •̯̀)
I got an ask a good while ago, quote "Hi hi hi! I saw that you were considering doing headcanon-like posts in between your profiles, so I was wondering if one of your headcanon posts could be about what kind of darling the HSR yans would go for? Like what kind of personality would attract them? Do they prefer someone feisty and strong willed or maybe someone quieter and compliant?"⠀⠀
Thank you for the ask, Anon! I had already started cooking something up for this ask, but then I thought like, what if instead of a text post, I did a whole-ass Quotev-core test about what kind of a darling the yans would each go for. Like what if. This idea was phenomenal and I do not take criticism on it. Please have at least as fun of a time with this thing as I had making it, and do not take any bit of this seriously.
When Blade's original banner came out in version 1.2, I got him at early pity on a random ten pull I decided to do. This turned out to be an extremely good thing as he ended up carrying my account for a while.
Anyway, this is to say that with his new form, Blade is back to carrying my account again:
I'm seeing people complain on Twitter about Caleb's most recent promise card. Not sure what people's opinions are on here?
Honestly, I enjoyed it. It's not my favourite Caleb card (mainly because there's a lot of steep competition), but I liked that it effectively acted as an epilogue to Passionate Overlord.
Now that'm back from con weekend, I am going to to try to get that witch!reader x familiar!Caleb drabble done. I did try to work on it yesterday but the weekend must have tired me out more than I'd thought because I typed two sentences and then sat in front of my laptop like this (⊙ˍ⊙) for the next 20 minutes.
Let's hope today's attempt is a little more successful ^^;;
*Rubs hands together* Settle in folks, this is going to be a long one.
First things first, for anyone who hasn't read it yet, this ask in reference to my Sylus and Caleb meet drabble. I'd recommend reading that before this post for some context. This post is going to discuss things that come up in that drabble AND include some character analysis/my takes on Sylus and Caleb as characters. I'm going to put everything else under the cut because spoilers.
So point number one: I mention in the tags of that post that I wrote that whole drabble because of one very specific line I could not get out of my head (and apparently I could only post it after writing an extra 1.6k words around it...). I'm not sure if anyone tried to guess what it was, but the correct answer is:
“Want to try calling off your guard dog, kitten?”
Point number two: Caleb's reaction to Sylus.
Obviously, we have no way of knowing whether or not Caleb does know who Sylus is in canon (and I somehow doubt we will ever get confirmation on this either way), but given Caleb's connections and the fact Sylus is definitely on Ever's radar, I think it's within the realms of possibility that he has enough info on him to recognise him on sight.
I'm not sure how well it comes across in the post (because of the limitations of writing from the reader's POV) but to be fair to Caleb, him nearly flying off the handle here isn't really due to jealousy. From his perspective you, the person he cares for most in the world and wants to protect at all costs, have been MIA all night and then suddenly reappear standing within arm's reach of a highly dangerous crime lord. While he might know of Sylus, Caleb has no way of knowing what his actual goals are, so, understandably, he's going to assume Sylus is after the power of the aether core. Yes, he's not pleased to see you out with another guy, but this is very much a secondary thing to the "holy shit, you're are in danger" response.
Why does he not immediately try to fight Sylus? Two things:
He's caught unprepared by this encounter and is aware of the unkillable monster rumours regarding Sylus.
If it did turn into a fight, there's a risk he forces Sylus' hand and you get dragged into the mess in the process.
^This doesn't mean he wasn't planning to make some attempt to scare him off though.
Point number three: Sylus' reaction to Caleb.
Much in the same way I think it makes sense for Caleb to know of Sylus, I also think it makes a lot of sense for Sylus to know who Caleb is. We know he kept track of MC via Mephisto and given how close Caleb is to you (and the fact he'd now tied up with Ever), it makes sense for him to have at least done a bit of research.
Now, is Sylus pleased by the fact another man is so close to you? No, no he is not.
Can he really do anything about it? No, no he cannot.
I wouldn't say canon goes into it explicitly but I think the general takeaway from the end of Long-Awaited Revelry is that Sylus is painfully aware he has screwed up his reunion with you, thus why he's way less forceful in his later cards as your relationship slowly becomes more amicable.
With when I set the drabble (i.e. you're on friendlyish terms but not anywhere close to the relationship he would like), he is also aware that there can only be so many more screw ups before your relationship will have been carpet-bombed so thoroughly, there'll be no rectifying it in the current timeline.
And then there's Caleb. Now admittedly after Homecoming Wings, Caleb and MC's relationship is not the same as it was back in the old days, but you can't remove the fact that Caleb was a huge part of MC's life growing up. In Caleb's cards after HCW, there is definitely some awkwardness but it is not the same as the early days of Sylus and MC's relationship.
To bring this back to the drabble, if Sylus were to do anything more extreme than he does, it would force you to pick between him and Caleb. And as things stand, that's not a competition he's sure he would win (if your relationship had progressed more, he'd be a bit more confident in this, but not yet).
So instead, all he can do is make some cutting remarks and try to minimise your relationship with Caleb (i.e. referring to him as your pet via a text message).
Now onto point number four, which is veering away from the drabble itself and entering character analysis territory: Why write a meeting between Sylus and Caleb?
You might think it's because Sylus is my favourite after Caleb, but actually my second favourite LI is Rafayel and I don't self-insert with Sylus at all (I do think Caleb and Rafayel could make for a fun duo, but that is a whole other thing).
I've seen people talk about Xavier and Sylus being foils for each other, while Zayne acts as Caleb's foil but honestly... I'm going to make the argument here that I think Caleb and Sylus act as better foils for each other.
So narrative foils are described as characters that contrast each other. Let's start by taking a little look at Sylus and Caleb's roles in the current timeline:
Sylus - A catastrophically bad first impression from your perspective (putting you at odds with each other). Slowly, as you spend more time with him, you learn there is more to him and your relationship gradually improves.
Caleb - Long established history and extremely positive relationship. Then HCW happens and you realise a person you've known your entire life might not actually be who you thought they were, leaving you on shaky ground with each other.
Then there's the difference in how they treat you. Caleb is incredibly overprotective and would much rather throw himself into danger while keeping you out of harm's way. Sylus, on the other hand, will support you in confronting the danger yourself and has more respect for your agency.
You could argue this difference is due to personality alone, but I think in the main timeline it goes deeper than that (and I am talking current timeline only here, not the myths as that's a whole other thing). Sylus is very confident in his abilities, and rightly so even given everything we've seen from him. Therefore, it makes sense for him feel that even in dangerous situations, you're not going to come to serious harm while he's there.
Caleb, while confident in his abilities to some extent, has effectively been repeatedly slapped in the face by the fact that even then, it still isn't enough. The experiments in the Gaia research facility and Josephine's house getting blown up (when he DID try to protect you from the blast but couldn't do anything about the grief that followed it when you thought he was dead). He's had his body modified without his consent, effectively lost the career he worked hard for (and most of the people he knew before the explosion) and Ever are STILL experimenting on him (someone get this man a therapist). He might be playing double agent but you cannot say he's had a good time of it.
There's definitely more I could say regarding these two, but unfortunately it is late, I would really need to brush up on my knowledge of Sylus' cards to go into any more detail. Suffice to say, I think the contrast between the two makes the idea of them interacting super interesting.
Thank you for sending in this ask and giving me an excuse to ramble!
Set at some point post-Homecoming Wings after you and Caleb have reconciled, pre-relationship Sylus x reader x Caleb, GN!Reader.
Word count: 1.6k
A/N: I've had a very specific scene in mind for a meeting between Sylus and Caleb for a while now but haven't done anything with it in case I ended up wanting to use it for a longer project. Then I remembered I have free will and decided to just go for it anyway and here we are.
The motorbike comes to a smooth stop outside your apartment building. You clamber off the back, giving the rider in front of you a pat on the shoulder while fighting back a yawn. As soon as you have both feet on the ground, you start to stretch, trying to relieve some of the tension accrued in your muscles from the long ride back from the N109 zone—likely not helped by the fact it’s approaching thirty hours since you last had any sleep.
Pulling your helmet off, you welcome the feeling of the fresh morning breeze against your face.
“Ugh, I’m so beat. If anyone wants me over the next couple of hours, they’re going to have to surgically remove me from my bed.”
Sylus lets out a huff of amusement as he removes his own helmet. “You were the one who insisted on coming back here instead of staying over.”
“And you were the one who said it would be a quick job.” You frown, thinking about the hours long mess that so called ‘quick job’, involving some protocore smugglers you’d been tracking with Sylus’ help, had turned into. Looking up at your apartment from the outside, you feel a little better knowing that a nice long nap is just an elevator ride away—that is, at least, until you catch movement in the window.
Odd. You pull your phone out, just in case it’s something as simple as Xavier letting himself in to drop off a package, only to feel the blood drain from your face as you take in the notifications on the screen.
Caleb: my mission ended early, I’m on the way to Linkon now. :)
Caleb: what do you want for dinner? I’ll pick up the ingredients on my way to your place.
Caleb: nearly at yours now I ended up getting the ingredients for some of your favourites. :D
Caleb: I can come and pick you up if you’re still working?
Caleb: you’re out late… where are you?
9 missed calls
Caleb: call me when you get this.
Shit, you think, glancing at Sylus, he was meant to visit tomorrow. While you were sure Caleb had some idea about your exploits in the N109 zone, you’d been very careful to exclude certain details. Your relationship with Sylus—as… frankly you didn’t know, but you were at least in more amicable territory now compared to your first meeting—was very much one of those things.
“Something wrong?” Sylus asks, tilting his head as catches sight of your expression.
“Nope,” you say, far too quickly, shoving your helmet at him. “Just very excited to go to bed.”
Unfortunately, Sylus takes the opportunity to grab hold of your wrist. “Is there something—”
He’s interrupted by a far too familiar voice calling your name. You yank your wrist back from him and turn to see Caleb striding towards you. He looks terrible, like he’s had about as much sleep as you have. You might feel a little guilty about all of those missed calls if you weren’t too busy freaking out over the fact that the two people in your life you’d wanted to keep apart at all costs are now barely a couple of metres away from each other!
“You must have been busy if you couldn’t check your phone,” Caleb says, a faint edge to his voice as he comes to a stop right in front of you. “Who’s this?” He turns to Sylus and you can practically feel the air crackle as the two of them size each other up.
From the amount of time Mephisto spends perched outside your window, you’d bet money Sylus already knows who Caleb is. All you can do is hope that Caleb does not know Sylus’ real identity as Onychinus’ leader.
You take a moment to look Caleb over, to see the way the lines of his body scream battle mode. Oh crap, he knows, you think, he definitely knows.
“He’s just a friend.” You try to keep your voice steady so you sound as convincing as possible. “I ended up working late on a mission and he happened to be nearby so I asked him to give me a ride home.”
“You should have called me, I would have come and got you. No need to trouble your… friend,” Caleb replies, not taking his eyes off of Sylus, almost like he thinks the other man will try something the moment he does.
“Oh, it was no trouble.” A large hand rests on your shoulder, shattering your hopes that Sylus would just leave quietly. “I think our resident hunter here is more than capable of deciding who they’d prefer to call, in their hour of need.”
Caleb’s eyes narrow at the point of contact between you and Sylus. “Depends, you never know what some people might want in exchange.”
“Want, hm?” You can’t see it, but you swear you can feel Sylus’ right eye glowing behind you. “You’d know all about what it means to want, wouldn’t you, Colonel?”
For a moment, Caleb’s complexion wanes, but he quickly comes back to himself, his hands clenching at his sides. “Let go of them.”
Sylus drums his index finger on your shoulder, drawing the moment out.
“Want to try calling off your guard dog, kitten?” he says softly into your ear, but you’re sure Caleb hears from the way you see him bristle.
You step away and shoot a sharp glare at Sylus, trying to communicate screw you for making this worse with just your eyes. You really don’t have the energy for this to turn into a whole thing, hell, you wouldn’t want to deal with this on a good day, let alone when you feel like you’re about to keel over from exhaustion.
“Caleb,” you plead quietly, stepping towards him and tugging on his sleeve. Unfortunately, your self-designated protector is pretty much immovable when he wants to be.
“Go inside, Pips. I just want to have a quick chat with your friend here.”
Oh hell no, you’re pretty sure if you leave these two alone together it’s likely to end in property damage or someone getting maimed. Time to bring out the big guns.
“Caleb, please” you repeat, letting a bit of a whine enter your voice as cling to his arm, pulling it against your chest and looking up at him with the saddest, wettest eyes you can manage. “I’m really tired and I just want to lie down and rest. Come inside with me.” To complete the image, you make sure to hang slightly on his arm, as though you’re so tired you can’t even hold up your own body weight.
He turns to look at you and you suspect he can see straight through your transparent attempt at manipulation, it wouldn’t be the first time you’ve done this song and dance together. All the while, you can feel Sylus watching you and you internally grimace. This certainly isn’t a side of you you’ve ever let him see.
Finally, something in Caleb’s face softens slightly, maybe because he can see the very real desperation on your face or the authentic dark circles under your eyes.
“Okay, we’ll go inside. Do you want me to carry you?”
You shake your head—there’s no way you’re leaving Sylus with that particular visual. “Just let me lean on you until we get to the apartment.”
“Sure, whatever you need.”
“Thanks for the lift, Skye,” you say, an effective dismissal. Even if Caleb does know who Sylus is, there’s no need to go around advertising his identity. “I’ll see you around.”
Sylus studies you as you turn with Caleb to head into your apartment building. You can’t quite read his expression, but if you had to call it anything, you’d say maybe it was considering.
“Sleep well, sweetie.”
Caleb tenses next to you and you quickly lean more into him so he can’t turn back without upsetting your balance. He looks down at you and you try to make as innocent an expression as possible. Once you make it to the threshold of the building, you break character briefly to angrily mouth “this is your fault” at Sylus over your shoulder, although regrettably that just seems to make him smirk.
The entrance doors shut behind you, cutting off your view of him and you forcibly hold back a sigh of relief. Disaster averted, for now at least.
During your ride up in the elevator, you feel your phone buzz in your pocket.
Sylus: It seems you have things handled. But do reach out if your pet causes you any trouble.
You suppose you should find the hint of concern there touching but the tone of the message leaves you feeling annoyed more than anything.
“Who’s that?” Caleb asks over your shoulder and you lock the phone before he can see the screen.
“No one important, just spam.”
There’s a heavy pause, and then Caleb says, “You know, that guy—”
“Let’s not do this right now, I’m so tired I can barely see straight.” You lean your head against him. “I’m sorry I didn’t see your messages and you were left waiting here alone. I really didn’t mean to, it was crazy back there.”
“Hm, you can tell me all about it once you’ve had some sleep. Along with other things.” You’re pretty sure by other things he means the whole Sylus issue. Oh well, at this point that is a problem for a better rested version of you to deal with. For now, you let your eyelids flutter shut for a moment, promising yourself you’ll open them as soon as you hear the ping from the elevator to let you know you’ve reached your floor.
Alright, I think we are done but I am quite tired so I'm going to give myself another chance to proof read this before I upload it as I think it could maybe use a little polishing (not sure if I will have the time tomorrow so might be Friday).
In case anyone wonders why I don't accept full fic requests via the askbox, there are two main reasons:
1) I already have a tendency to take on too many creative projects at once, which means some don't get finished and I am trying to be better about this.
2) I am very bad at estimating how long a project will be when I start it, and it often ends up being longer (and therefore taking longer) than I have accounted for.
As stated in my intro post though, I am more than happy to chat about characters and AU ideas (for example if anyone ever wants me to elaborate on one of my ideas via typed up ramble, I am more than happy to oblige) and do short things like most to least lists.
