People Watching

It was surprisingly warm for a February afternoon, Jisook noted as he opened the window of his unit and poked his head out, gazing down at the bustling street below. Leaning out over the frame, he let his arms dangle against the outer wall as he watched curiously–people watching was a past time of his. And one would think after some hundreds of years doing it he’d be bored, but no. Somehow, in some way, something different always caught his eyes. Somehow, in some way he always found interest in the people and the world around him.

So much so did he feel that way this warm February day, that he decided to spend a little time outside his unit and take a closer look at the individuals passing by. Smiling ever so slightly, he shifted with small black poof of smoke into his feline form, grey fur and black streaks, and slipped out the window, hopping from balcony to balcony until he landed with a graceful ‘plop’ on the sidewalk. From there, he moved out of direct traffic and perched himself on the outermost windowsill of the apartment building, curling up and watching the people go by. And there he remained for a while, lounging in the sun and lazily watching people while his tail twitched behind him. But the warmth of the day began to fade, and with a sad sort of mewl, he hopped down and waited a moment for the door to complex to open once again before he trotted inside and perched himself atop one of the tables in the lobby.

It’s been a day spent looking at cadavers with the foul smell of formalin lingering in her nose and truth to be told, cadavers are Chrystal’s least favorite part of medical school despite the years she’s spent inspecting them and memorizing the human anatomy through them. It’s needless to say that it has been a rough day for her and all she wants to do is snuggle under her covers and not think of the corpse dissected for her to learn. She’s glad to be able to be dismissed early that day.

Chrystal’s in utter glee when she reaches the doors of her apartment complex and she unconsciously incorporates skips to her steps as if she wasn’t literally dealing with the dead just hours earlier. She’s about to head for the stairs when she spots a grey cat perched on one of the lobby tables, she immediately stops her tracks and coos at the cat, making her way towards it slowly so as to not startle it. “Hello, little guy!” She greets it, like it’d ever respond as she crouches down to pet it on its head. “Are you lost?” She asks, trying to remember if any cats had been lost in their complex lately. Honestly, it’s pretty unusual to see animals by themselves in the lobby so Chrystal is pretty intrigued-- she has forgotten about the cadavers already. Carefully, she moves her hand to rub under its chin and then she catches its eyes and something feels off about it, like it’s not just your normal cat who’d nudge you for affection but also ignore you when you’re giving them love. Even more intrigued, she kneels down before it and scratches behind its ears. “Why are you here? Do you need any help?”

Doctor’s Orders [ Jun and Chrystal ]

“Unreal” He says simply, eyes wide and still full of shock thanks to his door-pillow being opened whilst he was still leaning against it, “You’re unreal, Ahn Chrystal.” Normal people did not look like that at this hour, usually they looked like they could commit several murders and then several more for good measure. He leaned in towards her almost luminous face, peering into her dark eyes. “Not a single eye crust…did you pop a pill or something before you opened the door?” Jun smiled crookedly, a hand taking the liberty of batting at her ponytail before turning back towards the stairs. “You look ready to run for congress, I hope President Park is prepared to give up her position.”

It had actually been a marvel that Kim Sangjun had a car in his possession this week. When he still had his noodle delivery job, he’d gotten around on a company scooter. After that went south and he was fired, a bike had been his only means of commute for months. Of course he had jumped at the chance for a road trip after winning a bet with a few of the guys in the opposite building while playing poker (it was either that or they stripped off their last articles of clothing, which thank god did not happen.) One of their cars was all his for a full 7 days now. “Gorgeous isn’t she?” He asked proudly, scrambling over to the busted up black truck in the HQ parking lot to hold the passenger door open. The coat of paint on the thing was matte black, as if someone had tried giving it a makeover with house paint. Besides its visual faults, the build indicated that the model was at least 30 years old, maybe older. “Don’t worry, it runs without spitting out too much black smoke and everything…maybe just cover your nose the first 5 seconds after I turn the key.” 

Trying his best to drown out any complaints his companion had about the vehicle with pure enthusiasm, Jun didn’t speak again until they were both loaded into the truck. The first thing he did once in the driver’s seat was open each window, his head leaning slightly towards the open air. The feeling of the wind hitting his face once he started driving was one of life’s greater pleasures. “So as your captain,” Jun started as he backed out of their parking space, “I think I have a claim to a few answers. First what the hell is up with that outfit because I can’t afford a dry-cleaning bill if it gets dirt on it.” He chuckled, his eyes going off the road for just a moment to scan her attire. “Second what’s up with the bag? Don’t tell me you brought pepper spray or something, I promise if we get in trouble I can protect myself.” He absentmindedly tapped his nails against the worn leather wheel of the car, a single hidden pinky finger claw scratching against the material. “Ooh and third I found a shortcut I wanted to tell you about. That’s not really a question but it’s sweet okay. There’s this abandoned mall that still had an elevator leading RIGHT up to his office building. I guess they built on top of it without re-purposing the few bottom floors. Psh and people call me stupid.” Jun shook his bangs playfully, bright and determined eyes practically shining as he looked at the sunny sky ahead of them. “I’m going to be the best student at SNU. Oh yeah did I tell you that?” He glanced over at Chrystal, “I’m going to be a college man like you. Going to the same one as your old boyfriend.” Not being able to resist, he allowed for a few obnoxious kissing noises to accompany the end of his sentence.

“Shut up!” Chrystal laughs as she lands a light hit against Jun’s shoulder when he bats her ponytail and tells her that she’s ready to run for congress. It’s a good joke, and by now, she should know well enough at how Jun’s sense of humor works. The tenants of the apartment complex aren’t even fully awake and yet here is Jun making her laugh. It eases out her nervousness a bit. “It’s all in the genes, you know.” She brags playfully, sticking her tongue out at Jun as she descends down the stairs with him. Well, that’s actually the truth, it’s all in her genes. 

“Is this yours?” She asks as they approach the truck. The truck’s not much but it gives the convenience of a driver and a vehicle that Chrystal needed for the day so she doesn’t really care as long as it does its job without shutting down on them in the middle of nowhere or something. She bows at Jun instinctively when he opens the door for her and whispers a small thank you as she climbs inside the truck, sets her backpack on her lap then her makes herself comfortable. “Did you check the engine? Gas? Spare tire?” She questions him as she remembers the list of things that people needed to check before going on a roadtrip. She’s not really interested in getting a car so she had to google that one. “As long as it gets us there, I’m sure I can handle it. I’ve no complaints at all.” She shrugs and checks the mirrors of the truck, people do that, right?

When Jun is inside the car as well, Chrystal buckles her seatbelt and hugs her backpack close to her chest then turns to Jun when he starts talking. She lets him talk and ask his questions before responding then gasps audibly when she hears the mention of her ex-boyfriend. How did Sangjun know?! She buries her face in her palms and groans. “No... stop that...” She runs her palms through her hands then straightens her back, looking at Jun with a slight frown. “How did you know about Jaehyun and me? You know him?!” She asks in return before realizing the things he had said earlier then her face immediately lights up. “Wait... did you say SNU? SNU! Oh my god, SNU! Congratulations! Wow, that’s so amazing!” She almost wanted to give him a hug but she’s bounded by the seatbelt so she can’t really do that. “Why did you only tell me that now? Aren’t we friends? We should celebrate later!” She exclaims excitedly. It really is something to celebrate. She knows how hard it is to get into SNU, she knows how much Jaehyun worked for it (and that’s why they broke up, too) and how much Jun probably worked for it as well. “I knew you had the potential of being a college man in you. Don’t let it drain you like it did to me.” She jokes and rests her head on the seat, reclining it a little. It’s half a joke, really. 

“Also,” she turns to him again. “Don’t worry about my clothes, the bag’s here because I brought extra clothes and a first-aid kit just in case you hurt yourself. And I don’t have pepper spray I don’t really... need that. Oh, I also have some snacks here!” She enumerates the things in her backpack as she unzips it and rummages through it slightly, taking out food items and waving it around to show to Jun. She zips back her bag and looks out the window, letting the air hit her face. “A shortcut?” She repeats slowly, not looking at Jun but out the window, arms wrapped around her backpack again. “Well... okay. I’m not sure about the old mall but... alright.” She’s almost sure that Dr. Song didn’t mention any abandoned mall but hey, Sangjun’s driving and he has probably checked the directions already, didn’t he? Chrystal remembers explicitly telling him Dr. Song’s address and her telling him to not get it wrong. Anyway. She looks at him again. “You’re the captain here. I’m just here for moral support.” She laughs slightly and reaches out fro what she assumes is the radio of the car. “Can I turn it on?” She fiddles with the knobs a little, not really enough to turn it on as she waits for the other’s reply. She read somewhere that some drivers preferred not having music as that distracts them from the road or whatever. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Maybe, the prospect of Jaehyun falling in love with another is something that she still doesn’t want to believe that’ll happen but she knows that she only owned his past and those are just good memories now. Maybe, being friends with him again would help her start loving him as a friend. Maybe, him being in her life again would help her stop missing the memories and face the reality of who Jaehyun is today, that he isn’t the same boy she fell in love with and it’s in the best way possible for her. 

She’s snapped out of her reverie when he tells her that he needs to get back to work so she nods frantically, pulling her backpack’s strap back on her shoulders and getting ready to stand up. “Yeah, we should hang out soon or something. Like friends.” She doesn’t know how to be friends with an ex but isn’t it just like normal friendship with extra memories and extra heartbreak? Whatever. She knows that they can manage. She stands up from her seat, smooths out her clothes again and faces him. “I’m really really glad we met. Have a great day, okay?” She tells him and then weighs out the pros and cons of going in for a hug. She goes in for it anyway, arms open wide for him to accept. Like friends.

“Sounds good,” he replied, “let’s hang out soon.” He hoped they could be like friends whenever they hangout. The last thing he wanted was for it to be awkward but he had high hopes since this meeting turned out being alright in the end. The past is behind them, right? “I look forward to it,” he continued, flashing her a genuine smile. 

“Thanks, you have a good day too.” He looked at her somewhat confused as she opened her arms. A hug? Jae felt it would have been too awkward to turn it down so he decided to accept the embrace, wrapping his arms loosely around her, awkwardly patting her back. The hug lasts only a moment before he pulls away. “I’ll see you around,” he smiled once more before going to clean off the table as she made her exit.

Carelessness.

Chaemi snaps her head up to where the voice came from, and she was visibly in shock. “h-hi,” she uttered, “n-no i mean, um, i’m kinda of locked out of my house because i left my keys in school. Dumb move, yeah, i know” she let out a loud sigh and slumped her shoulders. She was well-known for being the most careless person in her previous home, and coming out to live by herself maybe starting to backfire on her. She thought about the times where she misplaced her personal stuffs and keys to her room the last time. And no matter how many times she reminded herself about it, she somehow still manages to slip out of her mind. 

Chaemi turned to the girl beside her and sheepishly smiled, “um, i’m alright actually. It’s pretty late, i think you should head back to your room first. I’ll just call the locksmith tomorrow morning to get my door open.” It was pretty late and Chaemi was worried that it might be dangerous for the girl to be out here alone with her. Chaemi knew what she herself was and never has to worry about that, but the other girl looked a little helpless and didn’t want her to get into trouble.

Chrystal sees how that happened and just nods sympathetically. She looks around the area again, looking to see if there’s anyone that could also extend help with the key problem although she isn’t exactly sure of who or what she’s looking for. “What?” She snaps her head back at Chaemi when she tells her that she should go back to her room. A wave of worry washes over Chrystal immediately when the other says this. “And I’m going to leave you here in the cold? Look at you! You’re freezing!” She says as she stands up from the ledge, determined to bring Chaemi back to her apartment and let her stay overnight. It’s not like she can leave the girl all alone, right?

She holds out her hand for Chaemi to take then jerks head to a general direction downstairs. “I live on the second floor. My name’s Ahn Chrystal and I have a change of clothes for you, I think my clothes can fit on you. Also, I have blankets and pillows. You should stay overnight. I can’t leave you alone like this.” She tries to convince the girl and even if the girl says no to her offer, she’d still find a way to make the girl comfortable. Maybe, they can go up the sixth floor to see if the landlord has spare keys? She’s already thinking of plans B, C, D, and the rest of the alphabet to help the other girl out. “Or if you’re not comfortable with that whole ordeal, we can go check if the landlord has spare keys. I’m not sure if he’s around though...” She recalls seeing the landlord leave earlier that day and she doesn’t really know if he has come back.

(/tapes a rose on your door along with an orange post-it with little hearts scribbled all over it/) I don’t have any chocolate, but I always have too many flowers. Happy Valentine’s Day!

(/goes out of her apartment to take out today’s trash and spots the little rose and the note taped on her door.) Wow. (/takes the rose and the note with a free hand and smiles, a bit surprised and confused.) Someone must be really nice. (/she thinks she might have an inkling of who it was. She looks around and shrugs, taking the rose and note with her to the throwbins. Of course she’s going to keep the flower.)

Doctor’s Orders [ Jun and Chrystal ]

He had done it. It only took 100+ spam texts, 2 visits to her doorstep, and countless minutes of obnoxious prodding…but he had done it. Ahn “stick up my ass” Chrystal had been broken down to the point of agreeing to accompany the boy on a weekend roadtrip to an outer district of Seoul. Social butterfly wasn’t the best word to describe either of them, but Jun knew that the next time he felt like getting into some trouble it would be with her. The two were opposites in a good way. Chrystal kept Jun on his toes by being his ever-so-amusing voice of reason. And Jun had the important job of ensuring Chrystal didn’t shrivel up and die in that apartment of hers. Jun decided this weekend was a specifically pivotal moment in her life after catching wind that she and Jaehyun used to have something between them. The awkwardness they had probably gone through during the week was enough to make the werewolf worry that Chrystal might spend the whole weekend indoors. While his actions were often questionable at best, Jun’s intentions were always good when it came to Chrystal. It was a set in stone fact for Jun that he didn’t have any friends, but Chrystal was coming pretty damn close to fitting that definition. Enough so that all he wanted for them this weekend was some spontaneous thinking, a little adventure, and maybe just a dash of trouble if they could find it (and Jun often did.) Hell, besides Chrystal wanting to meet with a Doctor in his private office and a bibimbap place that looked promising, they really hadn’t planned anything out. Both the students were too poor to afford any of the real attractions tourists loved anyways.  

The 20 year old shuffled down the apartment stairs in his worn sneakers at a snail’s pace. When the two had called the Doctor helping Chrystal with her assignment, he had requested that they come over at a shockingly early 8AM. They’d have to leave by 7 at the latest to make it. With sleep blearing the boy’s eyes, he pushed his hood over his messy hair and loudly knocked on Chrystal’s apartment door. “Yah Ahn you better be awake in there. If you got drunk last night and forgot about waking up early today I’m not even gonna help you with your hangover.” The two sentences of yelling had already gotten Jun tired again, the brunet deciding it wouldn’t hurt to lean against the door and rest his eyes until she answers. “And please have coffee in there…” He mumbled to himself, face being squashed against the wood all the while. 

His half-nap against the door was interrupted by a buzzing in his pocket. Not even bothering to lift his head from the door, Jun reached into his pocket and looked down at the bright screen. 

Direction Ready For: Dr. Song’s Office

She was going to be so impressed that Jun had the guy’s address all ready and waiting. Chrystal had probably assumed she’d have to be the responsible one, but not this time. Now if only he could get rid of the weird feeling he had that he had gotten the address a few numbers off…eh it was probably fine. They’d end up close enough to find it, right?

Chrystal has been up since 5AM and she’s been staring into her mirror for almost an hour now, rehearsing the questions she’s going to ask Dr. Song in her mind and re-checking the list of her things to bring in her mind. She’s nervous for a lot of reasons, one because he’s going to meet with a prestigious doctor that’s going to help her with graduating with flying colors and career offers to different hospitals (and if she fucks this up, she really wouldn’t want to show up in Yonsei ever again.) Two, because Sangjun is with her and that they’re going on a roadtrip after the meeting with Dr. Song. She doesn’t really know why she agreed on that but she needed a driver and Sangjun is exactly what she needed. His timing for annoying her to loosen up and to go join him in a roadtrip is just perfect so it didn’t take her that long to decide whether she’d go with Jun or not. His agreeing with her favor helped her to get to the decision of joining him in a roadtrip.

Now, Chrystal doesn’t really expect the worst from this roadtrip but she’s packed a first-aid kit just in case Jun hurts himself or worse, they get into trouble. She doesn’t want any of that and all she wants is to get over with the interview with Dr. Song and eat the bibimbap she’s promised. It’s not all bad though, she thinks. She appreciates the fact that Jun actually cares about her and wants her to relax. But she can’t help but wonder if she really does seem that tight or prissy? Is that how most people really look at her with her being a medical student and working too hard to get to where she wants to be? She’s really not that bad with relaxing... and perhaps that’s what she wanted to prove to Sangjun who’s been annoying her endlessly about this. I can relax, she tells herself. This day will go through smoothly. 

She’s snapped out her mumbling questions to herself when she hears knocking on her door and Jun’s voice being way loud at quarter to 7 in the morning. But she appreciates the fact that he didn’t forget to wake up early. She hauls her backpack on her shoulders and makes her way to her door, her hair up in a ponytail. She dresses up better than her usual go-to because well, she’s meeting the person that could make or break her. So she squeezed herself in a white blouse, clean jeans and a pair of new sneakers. She wanted to make an impression Dr. Song. She knows that a white blouse isn’t probably the best attire for a roadtrip but she’s packed a change of clothes just in case. It’s not Chrystal if she doesn’t have extra everything. 

“I’m coming... and no I don’t have coffee!” She yells as she nears her door then opens it, an unsuspecting Jun leaning against it and she looks at him, eyes wide. “G’morning... I’ve been up since 5AM so I didn’t forget about this. I’m glad you didn’t forget. Thanks.” She greets with a smile, then adjusts the straps of her backpack on her shoulders.“Are we good to go, captain?”

The universe looking for the perfect timing. Jaehyun couldn’t help but smiled at that. It sounded cute and perhaps it was right. Jae was glad they hadn’t met before today. He needed the last three years to cry, get over her, move on and start over in life. So he was glad they didn’t run into each other until then. He is sure that if they had met each other earlier, this comfortable atmosphere would not have been present. 

Pressing his lips together, he awaited for her response. Honestly, he couldn’t believe he actually asked her if she wanted to still be friends. He was expecting her to ask if he was crazy. But time has moved forward and so have they, so he didn’t see something wrong with it. Yeah, I’d love to be friends again. His eyes widened, Really? He was shocked but in a good way. He was actually glad she said yes to being friends again. “I’m glad,” he replies, a wide smile spreading across his face. 

“I do think so,” he simply agrees. “We didn’t necessarily end things on happy terms, so I am glad now. Three years seems like it was the perfect amount of time to move on, since we are now different from the people we used to be,” he states, agreeing to everything she said. He isn’t just agreeing for the hell of it, he actually does believe that is why they met again. “I am glad we met again and had this talk.” Who would have known that such a heartache would have turned into something Jae could smile about. Glancing back at the clock on the wall, he notices he only has five minutes left to his break. “I gotta go back to work soon, you should stop by here more often though. Also, thanks for coming into the store today,” he smiled.

Carelessness.

It was night fall, and the rain was falling hard down on Chaemi. Things was just not going right for her that day. After running late for class in the morning because she woke up late, she realize she left her assignment at home again. Just when she thought her day couldn’t get any worse, on her way home from school, it started to pour heavily and she didn’t have an umbrella with her. “God dammit,” she muttered in annoyance. In the end, she ended up running all the way back.

“Finally,” she muttered under her breath as soon as her apartment was in her sight. She reached into her pocket for her keys but to her horror, there was nothing. After anxiously fumbling through all her pockets and bag multiple times, she gave up looking for it. She groaned and pulled her hair in frustration. She glanced at the steps leading to the apartment and sighed to herself as she sat down on the ledge, hugging her arms close to her body. She pulled her knees closer to her chest, laying her forehead on them, praying she wouldn’t end up dying out in the cold that day.

Chrystal’s descending down the stairs from a friend’s apartment upstairs with a bounce in her steps. She had a good day in general and she’s glad to be able to just go back to her apartment tonight to rest. Although despite relaxing for the majority of the day, she really can’t believe that she had the ability to loosen up and not think about the hours she should’ve spent on studying. She doesn’t regret her decisions today though.

As she reaches the landing of the fourth floor, she senses a great aura that makes her feel down and intimidated all the same and that’s where she spots the girl who seems to be freezing cold, cuddling herself to keep warm. She looks around and sees that no one is there other than the two of them so she decides to approach the other, her caring side taking over than anything. She really doesn’t want this girl to die in the cold... especially with the weather and how soaked with rain water she is right now. She walks to her slowly, then greets her softly as to not surprise her. “Hi? Are you okay?” She asks as she sits next to her on the ledge. That’s the wrong question, but she hopes that the other would let her be a help.

You’re kidding, right? He just shakes his head to her question. He tries to stay patient, waiting for her to say where she is located in HQ. He definitely wasn’t kidding and the fact that she asked him that makes him even more curious. He tries to study her expressions, but he has no clue what she is thinking which only made him curiouser and curiouser. The second floor of the same building? Jaehyun’s mouth fell agape, he did not see that coming. “You’re right, I don’t believe you,” he joked, laughing softly. If Jaehyun didn’t know any better, he really would have thought that Chrystal was joking.

The whole situation was baffling. “It really is weird, I am unsure how to even process this whole thing,” he admitted, rubbing at the nape of his neck. It was a little too weird. Was fate trying to tell them something? He wondered what the future would be for the two. Friends? More than that? Jaehyun doubted they would be more. For one, he was sure she wouldn’t want to be with him again. They do say you can’t just un-love a first love. But time goes on and feels fade. Of course he still likes her, though the feelings weren’t the same as they were younger but he definitely does care about her. For the last three years he often wondered if she was well. Ever since this morning, his feeling have been a rye. “It is rather strange that we meet now, I wonder how we could have missed each other before now?”

Earlier Jaehyun was really not ready to see Chrystal but now he was somewhat comfortable. He wished they could stay like this. He couldn’t help but wonder what she was thinking? “Hey, Chrystal..” he started to speaking, looking up from his hands that were nervously squeezed into fists on his lap. “Do you think we could ever be friends again?” He asked gazing into her eyes. That question took a lot for him to ask but he wanted to know what she thought. He missed seeing her and talking to her. Her company was also soothing. This meeting proved it. He was ready to run for his life earlier and just after properly talking to her, he is happy to be in her presence again.

Timing. It’s timing that held them away from each other and right now, Chrystal thinks that meeting two years later is the perfect timing for the both of them when it doesn’t hurt anymore and when wounds have healed. “I guess... the universe is just looking for the perfect timing for us to meet again.” She concludes with a small smile and shrugs a little. Is this the closure that she’s finally getting after three years? Though... there are still some questions in her mind that she doesn’t know if she has the bravery to ask.

Do you think we could ever be friends again? His question replays in Chrystal’s mind and it rings in her ears like he’s repeating it again and again when he really isn’t. She stares at him for a moment, thinking of the proper answer. She feels that they’re friends now, with how comfortable she feels talking and laughing with him. The only wrong answer here is not letting Jaehyun into her life again when he used to be the best part of it. So, she smiles at him at nods. “Yeah, I’d love to be friends again.” Some people say that you’re only friends with your ex if you didn’t love them enough or if you still love them. Chrystal’s sure that she loved him with all her heart and she still loves him... but it’s a different kind of love from when they were teenagers and in love. After all, love never truly disappears... it only changes. Whoever said that you can’t be friends with your ex must be a complete lunatic. Chrystal wants Jaehyun in her life again and she isn’t passing this chance up.

“Hey, I have to ask you something.” She clears her throat and wonders how long does she have until he has to return to work. She wonders if this is the right time to get the proper closure she wants. “Do you think this is why we met again? I mean... two years later when we’ve grown a lot?” Her voice gets solemn, almost airy. “Because we’re meant to meet each other again when we’re different people to forgive each other and be friends again?” And maybe because you and I weren’t meant to be. She wonders if she’s asking the right questions and her throat feels dry. Her iced latte’s almost finished though.

The sound of her fork hitting the floor startled Jae. He looks at her worriedly unsure what happened. Was it something he said? He waited impatiently for her to continue. He furrowed his eyebrows, unable to clearly here her mumbling. Just as he was about to ask her what she said, the next words out of her mouth, threw him for a loop. We’ve been staying in the same apartment complex? Did his ears deceive him? There’s noway she could have said that they were in the same apartment complex. “Wait- Seriously? You live in the HQ apartment complex too? How is that possible?!” If Jae didn’t know any better, he would have thought Chrystal was playing a joke on him. What were the chances that they’d be living in the same apartment complex? 

 The whole situation was really unbelievable. Jaehyun sat back in his chair unable to process this whole thing. When Chrystal started to laugh, he couldn’t help but join in. Her laugh was always infectious to him and the situation was so unreal that he couldn’t help but laugh as well. Seoul is a big place, the world is a big place, and yet there they were living so close to each other. “Unbelievable was exactly what I was thinking,” he chimed in. “I am in building A, floor three.” There was no way she could be in building A, there was a few other buildings that he didn’t really go, so meeting would be less likely. But he was surprised they never even met at any of the shared facilities. “What about you?” He questioned, sitting up, resting his elbows on the table. He was really curious so he didn’t want to miss where she was in the complex. The whole situation was really something. Jaehyun couldn’t help but wonder how all this happened. What are the chances that they would meet again in another country three years later at his cafe and then only find out that they live in the same complex for possibly the past two years? The whole thing seemed like one of those romance dramas.

She missed this, she missed laughing with him and sometimes at him. She missed the feeling of her cheeks hurting from too much laughing because of something weird that they both thought to be funny. Nostalgia hits her square in the face and it’s an odd feeling inside her chest and tummy. She steals glances at him at decides that yeah, she did miss Jaehyun, a lot and she’s thankful for her professor cancelling the morning classes now.

“No way!” Chrystal almost yells but she keeps her tone down despite the rise in it showing her surprise. “You’re kidding, right?” She jokes, squinting her eyes at him playfully like soon enough he’s going to reveal that it’s a joke and that he isn’t actually living in HQ. But she knows well enough that it’s not going to happen. She knows well enough that she does indeed share a building with her ex and not once did she even run into him. Did the universe conspire against them that’s why it’s only after two years of her staying in Korea that they meet again?  Chrystal leans back on her chair with her hands flat on her lap. She presses her lips together for a moment before finally answering his question with a childish grin. “You won’t believe me when I say this but... I also live in building A... second floor.” She almost starts giggling again but she bites her lips to suppress the laugh. She doesn’t know why she finds the cruelty of the world to them so funny. 

Had they met again in the first year that Chrystal moved in, could they have patched things up? Could they have actually worked it out when the wound was fresh? Could they have had an early shot at second chance when she was sure that she still loved him? Chrystal couldn’t help but wonder about these things. There must really be a reason why they only met two years later, was it closure? Was it a late shot at second chance? She thinks it’s too early to think about that as right now... she just wants to talk to Jaehyun and make up for the years missed. After all, he was a big part of her life and she wouldn’t mind him being a part of it again, no matter the relationship.  Leaning in to take her drink from the table and drink from it, she asks him. “It’s so weird don’t you think?” She plays with the straw of her drink and looks at him. “How we only met two years later?” When we’re both mature, when we’ve both grown... as if HQ was protecting us when we were younger. “Same building, a floor difference... It’s just... wow... It’s almost impossible to not run into each other.” Maybe they have run into each other before but there were distractions, but she is sure that if they did run into each other before, she would’ve known. She would’ve felt him.

You have to give yourself credit for that, too. Perhaps she was right but he rather give her all the credit. Before he had met her he was just a broken kid with no dreams. He didn’t really care much about the future, his schooling, nothing. And then he moved to the states and met Chrystal. Between meeting her and finally experiencing a burden free life, he was able to live happily and set himself on the right path. He became the complete opposite of how he was prior to moving. However, he didn’t want to say otherwise so he just smiled, adding a slight nod in agreement. 

“Oh man, it sucks that your classes were canceled. I hate when they are canceled but you don’t find out until you’re already ready to go,” he commented, understanding the situation. He actually felt bad for her, but if it wasn’t for all of that. They wouldn’t have met up again. “Well your friends picked a good place at least. This place is one of the best. It is especially known for the variety of desserts” he commented. “How is the cake by the way?”

It was strange. Before he felt extremely awkward and nervous but the mood between the two seemed to have shifted to a more comfortable one. Jaehyun couldn’t complain though, it was a lot nicer to feel more at ease with her again. “I actually stay not too far from here, at the HQ apartment complex. It’s just a short distance up this block,” he explained motioning towards the street the shop was overlooking. “It’s somewhat new, I guess and it’s really nice. Where do you stay?” he questioned, tilting his head slightly. He was actually rather curious. He already figured there was no way it could be HQ, he probably would have seen her by now.

“It’s good!” She compliments, taking a bite after the other. It has some sort of and irresistible taste to it that Chrystal thinks she wants another cake but she knows that it’ll be bad for her if she eats more than what’s in front of her now. “Compliments to the baker.” She says, pulling the fork away from her lips as she has just eaten another slice.

Her fork clatters against the floor when she hears where he’s currently staying. “What?” She asks, baffled, confused and shocked more than anything. There’s no way he could’ve been staying at HQ all those years and they haven’t even met. “Oh god, I’m so sorry..” She mumbles as she picks up her fork then straightens back up, blinking hard at him. “You mean... we’ve been staying in the same apartment complex and we haven’t run into each other?” She speaks slow, shaking her head slightly in disbelief. 

And then she starts laughing. A laugh that has her shoulders bouncing up and down and her hand pressing against her lips to not make embarrassing laughing sounds. She finds it funny how not once did they run into each other in the apartment complex, after all it’s not like she spent the entirety of those two years cooped up in her room studying medical facts. “This is unbelievable, Jae.” She says when she has stopped laughing. Then she runs a hand through her face and smiles at him. “Which building? Which floor?” Meeting her ex was never in her wildest dreams but living in the same apartment complex is something that has never crossed her mind. If meeting your ex that you never had contact with after the break-up had a slim chance of happening, living in the same complex as they are in is zero to none. But it happened. Perhaps they stayed on different buildings that’s why they never ran into each other, perhaps he always used the elevators while Chrystal preferred the stairs as her floor’s not that way up. That could be the possibilities. Learning this, she couldn’t help but think that they were meant to meet again, that their paths were destined to cross again... but the reason why, she does not know.

Two years ago? Not too long after he returned, did she. He wasn’t sure how to honestly feel. He was kinda upset because if they did try to do a long distance relationship, in the end they wouldn’t have been apart for too long. But who would have known then. Pressing his lips together he listened intently to what she was saying. He was waiting for this moment for the last three years, so he didn’t want to miss a thing. “I see, that’s good to hear. I always knew you’d be able to do it,” he nodded slightly, offering her a genuine smile. Jae was glad that things worked out for her and she even got a scholarship. He was rather impressed. “You would have been crazy to not take it,” he simply replied. Yonsei, huh? Jaehyun wasn’t sure if he was relieved or a bit sad that they were at two different universities but he didn’t want to think to much into it, so he tried to shake off the thought of it. 

The sound of her voice brought him back to reality. “Oh- yeah, it’s good. I really like it at SNU,” he nodded a bit. Noticing she pushed the cake a bit closer to him, he decided one bite couldn’t hurt. He was curious if it tasted good or not anyway. Jae grabbed the other fork and dug into the cake, he pulled off a small piece before continuing, “I really didn’t think I would like university but it isn’t too bad. I am not too shabby of a student either.” He was somewhat proud of himself. He remembered back when he didn’t care about his studies and it wasn’t until mid high school that he changed. “I should say thanks, you really helped me grow as a person,” he smiled softly before biting the slice of cake off his fork. He was somewhat embarrassed to have said that aloud. He mentally cursed himself for letting such words slip out of his mouth. It was too late to take it back now though. He placed the fork down on a napkin laying in front of him. “Sorry,” he mumbled. He hoped she didn’t feel awkward because of what he said. Just in case he quickly tried to steer the conversation elsewhere. “So uh- do you come around this area often?” Since he hasn’t seen her around at all since she returned, he wondered if she was just visiting the area. The stores, restaurants, and clubs are nice is this part of town. Over the years he complied a list of things to ask Chrystal when he had they meet again but he couldn’t recall anything on it at this point. The two questions he really wanted to know the answers two he would never actually ask. Maybe one day, but that one day was definitely not this one.

The validity that comes from Jaehyun feels oddly satisfying for Chrystal. Like it is the one thing that she has been waiting the most for. Before they broke up, Chrystal always knew that she’d go to medical school and become a doctor one day. She distinctly remembers never shutting up about that dream to Jaehyun and now that she is so close to fulfilling that dream she’s glad that the one who supported her the most throughout her high school daydreams about being a doctor finally knows that in a few years, Chrystal Ahn, M.D. is something that’s going to happen. “Yeah I know,” she giggles, “and it’s more practical, college back home is... ugh... so expensive.” She shudders, thinking of the first year of university she spent in US and the expenses her mother had to go through. With the scholarship, the only thing her mother had to care about was sending Chrystal messages of encouragement every morning. 

She nods as she listens to him speak, she’s happy that he’s been doing well academically. After all, he did want to go to SNU so bad and three years ago, she wouldn’t have seen why but now, she thinks she knows exactly why. The sweetness of the cake bursts in her mouth as she blushes when Jaehyun says that she’s helped him grow. She almost chokes on the cake but she quickly swallows it down and reaches out for her drink. “It’s fine,” she says when Jaehyun apologizes. “You have to give yourself credit for that, too.” She tells him after taking a sip of her iced latte. 

Chrystal releases a breath and smooths out the nonexistent creases of her jeans when he asks her if she’s around this area often. “Oh no,” she says, leaning forward to grab another bite of the cake.  “I usually just stay around places near my university or apartment but my classes were cancelled this morning and I had to wake up at ungodly hours of the morning just to get there in time. So, I was irritated and my friends have been raving about this place. I decided, why not go here, right? Well I mean, I deserved something good this day and good food is always good.” She rambles on, retelling the story of how she got there comfortably, waving her fork around  in gesticulation. She doesn’t realize it, but she’s slowly easing into the presence of Jaehyun in her life again. “And then... I see you again.” She trails away, voice turning almost inaudible but she shakes her head and smiles at him again. Fairly enough, she doesn’t know if it’s a good or bad thing to meet him again. But right now, she’s leaning towards the good. “Well um, where do you stay now though? I mean, Seoul’s one city, we must be living on opposite ends to not meet again after two years.” She sits back in her chair and tilts her head to the side.  It’s a nonchalant question and she thinks back to HQ as it sits in the middle of Seoul, a reasonable distance from Yonsei and a whole lot more.
