Learning from a trip to John's

Eshaton- The nuclear war simulation game that the little kids play. The name is derived from Etiology, the study of causation and origin.

In his various affairs, Orin Incandeza repeatedly refers to various women (joelle) as "the subject" We know from other sections, with his moms gramatical anal retentiveness, that he has a very in depth understanding of sentence structures and various gramatical functions. That there leaves him as nothing more than the object. That is how he sees his life which is sad, ad the same time interesting to us to study him more as an individual.

I just came to a point where there is an endnote, which is a completely independent chapter unrelated to the original text. And in this end-note chapter, it contains it's own independent section of lettered (as opposed to numbered) endnotes. Why

Initial Response to Wallace's Syllabusing

Initially, the most striking thing in this short piece was the dirrect quotation from Wallace's syllabus:

"In less narcotizing words, English 102 aims to show you some ways to read fiction more deeply, to come up with more interesting insights on how pieces of fiction work, to have informed intelligent reasons for liking or disliking a piece of fiction, and to write—clearly, persuasively, and above all interestingly—about stuff you’ve read."

I think that not only with fiction, but a lot of written work as a whole, I lack a vocabulary, tools necessary, etc. to be able to intelligently identify and discuss my opinions and residual feelings during and after the completion of any piece. This can be extended to film and innumerable art forms too. I find it interesting, but not surprising that Wallace teaches this, because as a writer, he has amazing abilities as an artist and story teller to lay out words in a way that create such deep and connectable realism. I feel like one of the most pleasurable things about reading Wallace is the incredibly vivid and intense combinations of words that seem unlike any other writer. (Will post examples of these as I read on.)

How has television affected social conservation and classroom settings?

Those of us born, say, in the '60s were trained by television to look where it pointed., usually at versions of "real life" made prettier, sweeter, livelier by succumbing to a product or temptation. Today's mega-audience is way better trained, and the TV has discarded what's not needed. A dog, if you point at something, will look only at your finger.
