Shoes to Fill
chuckcoulsonâ:
Chuck raised and an eyebrow and smiled, âThatâs a pretty handy tool to have in the apocalypse I could imagine.â She put her hands in her pockets. âThat sounds like something that could be my speed. I think Ms. Potts was telling me about the apprenticeships. May do me good to get my mind onto something different. Something focused.â
âTheyâve also been handy when people who have fought members of my family before have gotten it in their heads that killing me would be a good idea. Â Iâm the only one with claws in my feet.â Â The element of surprise was valuable.
Laura nodded, âI started the farm when there were only a few dozen people living in Avengers Tower. Â We raided some community gardens for supplies, I buried myself in gardening books for a week. Â I had spent a bit of time in Stormâs greenhouse but I was far from being an expert. Â But having it was way better for my mental health than going out and fighting monsters every day.â
Chuck smiled, âthatâs pretty awesome. I know a few guys that I would kick if I had that power.â
âI used to help my mom in the garden at our house.â Chuck said, âI can see why itâd be so peaceful for people. I always just liked sitting amongst everything. It was kind of a way to unplug from the world.â
chuckcoulsonâ:
Chuck nodded âIâd like that. Thank you Ms. Storm,â she sniffed and took a drink of her cocoa. She didnât hate her father. Not really. She was just more confused by her emerging powers and everything along with his girlfriend May. âI donât hate my dad,â she said aloud. âIâm justâŠsometimes I feel like if like heâs not a dad. Not to me anyway.â
Ororo nodded. Â âIâm glad you donât hate him. Â Maybe you just need to take some time and figure out how to approach him on your own terms. Â At the risk of sounding cliche, youâre going through a lot of changes right now, changes your dad is not going to be able to understand.â Â He might have spent his life obsessing over superheroes, but exploring oneâs own mutant abilities was something different. Â It was almost spiritual.
âIt might be that the two of you need to adjust what you expect from each other. Â But I will say, if thereâs a human who would take having a mutant child well, itâs Phil.â Â It was sad that this was a point to clarify, but it was true.
Chuck nodded sadly at Ororo. âI get what youâre saying.â She picked at her jeans and said, âI think I say him kissing that woman and just, it just sent me over the edge.â Wiping at her face she said âI mean he and my mom were divorced, but like, I never saw them like other divorced parents. They never argued really, the main reason they split was because he wanted to keep us safe. So I thought he had still loved her. But thatâs not really fair to assume I guess.â
âI know heâd be fine with me being a mutant,â Chuck said, âheâd be the first to jump to my defense. But I just feel with such distance between us, I donât feel like I can go to him like I once did.â

âI think he cares a lot more than you think he does. Maybe it was his fault he wasnât around when you were a kid, but heâs trying now. That counts for something,â May tried to reason with her. âAnd his âsuperhero squadâ is all pretty pissed at him. I can pretty much guarantee he would much rather be spending his time with you.â
âNavigating the outbreak wasnât that simple. I had my entire team on my plane, besides your dad, when I took off from the SHIELD base. We got shot out of the sky and I landed to find none of my team was there anymore. How did I lose my entire team in a two hour flight? And with what Jemma went throughâI canât even imagine what happened with the others,â May said letting some of the emotion show for the girlâs benefit. It had been something she had been practicing since she took in her kids. âGive him a chance to explain. Give yourself a chance to get this off your chest. Keeping it all in turns you into someone like me.â
Chuck laughed, âheâs trying? Thatâs funny. You showed up to fight his battles, not him.â She ran a hand through her hair. âHe was trying, then you and the kids got here and Iâm back to being alone.âÂ
While Chuck didnât want anything to do with May, not really. She did feel for her though, âIâm sorry about your team.â Chuck said gently, âI watched my best friend get mauled to death, my mother never made it home.âÂ
âHe didnât send me. He doesnât know Iâm here,â May tried to reason patiently. âI donât want to imply what youâre feeling is invalid, but Iâm sure thatâs not his intent. Sometimes when people have to be strong for so long, people forget that they need help too. You have had to be so strong your whole life, maybe he needs a reminder that youâre still his daughter wanting her dad.â âIâm sorry you had to deal with that, especially alone. The thing about teams is they change. Sometimes for the worst and it really hurts. And sometimes itâs for the better. I know it sounds ridiculously cheesy, but I want you part of my new team. And the kids, they really want to get to know you better. Jacob thinks youâre âreally cool.â But itâs your choice.â
She wants me for a babysitter so she and my dad could go off. Chuck didnât say that, but thatâs what she got from the conversation. In regards to her father she said âso I have to prove to him I still want to be his daughter? I didnât know that expired.â
Chuck sighed, âI appreciate what youâre trying to do Ms. May, but I need to be on my own and figure things out. I need to talk to my dad but not until Iâm ready.â
May wasnât sure how she had failed at this conversation so completely. Her understanding of teen mentality was clearly nonexistent. May looked over to Chuck before responding, âThatâs not what I meant. Clearly, I donât know what Iâm doing. But youâre important to him. Everything is just complicated since the outbreak.â
May nodded. She wasnât here to force Chuck to do anything she didnât want to do. Chuck was old enough to make these decisions on her own. May was disappointed she couldnât get through to her, but she knew she couldnât help anyone who didnât want her help. May reached into her pack and pulled out a leather-bound book. âWar and Peace,â she said. âI know you at least used to like reading. I found this. Itâs barely even scuffed up. I thought youâd might like it. If not, thatâs okay too.â
May stood up, ready to get out of Chuckâs way.Â
Chuck took the book and said âthank you,â she put the book to her side. She felt tears well up in her eyes and she wiped them away. âThis has been going on since before the outbreak.â She sniffed and said. âIâve always been an afterthought to his work. I know what he did was important but itâs hard, having your life uprooted every time a bad guy looks at your dad wrong...â
âI donât mind you and my dad being a thing,â Chuck said, âI mean itâs fine. I just hate feeling like Iâm not meant to be part of this life...â

She nodded, âI get that, Iâll try to keep my girly emotions in check.â She joked, and figured it wouldnât register with him.Â
She watched the puppies play, it was a nice distraction from the issues she was having with her Dad and May. She smiled as Malcolm laid down to where Beaker tried to climb on top of him. âHow long have you had Beaker?âÂ
âIs there a difference in emotions based on gender?â Know he knew that hormonal changes could cause mood swings and other such things but he couldnât define exactly how she intended that statement.
âClint gave Beaker to me in the fall. I didnât keep strict track of the date. I have read many books about teaching canines various skills and lessons.  We have been learning together.â Of course many of the books called it training.  The word while ultimately neutral in meaning did have a rather negative association for him.
âSome people will tell you that.â Chuck shrugged. âI donât think there is that much of a difference one way or another but people tend to think girls canât control their emotions like guys do. I donât believe that but,â she shrugged and said. âItâs the rumor.â
âWell thatâs good you guys have had each other.â Chuck commented. âI know I probably wouldnât have made it as far as I have without Malcolm. People arenât cut out to be alone for that long.â
Finding a Place
chuckcoulsonâ:Â
So, it was her dadâs doing, or it sounded like it. Malcolm nuzzled himself under her arm and looked up at her, sensing her anxiety about it. Looking to Pepper, Chuck chewed the inside of her cheek and asked, âI hadnât heard about it, but I donât talk to a lot of people here.â
Scratching Malcolm, Chuck after a few moments asked, âwhat sort of things?â It couldnât hurt to ask. Maybe itâd give her something to do other than mope.
âPretty much every job the adults do here.  Which can be anything from cooking, to repair work, teaching, gardening, learning the skills our scouts and hunting parties use.â Pepper kept the gentle smile in place as she ticked things off. Â
âIf you donât have a particular field of interest you can try different things.  Everything we do here is important. To making sure everything stays clean so we donât get sick from preventable illness, to growing food, to figure out how we can use items the scouts find.â  Of course some of these jobs kids wouldnât necessarily find very exciting to deal with. Yet she meant it when she said every job was vital.  âYou can keep trying things until we find the right fit.â
Chuck thought on it, âI always was good with science in school.â She shrugged, âbut I donât mind helping, in whatever field you guys need help with. I just feel a bit lost and overwhelmed at the moment.â She smiled shyly and said. âMy dad has kind of left me on my own enough that I know I need to pull my weight where I can.â

âI know,â Chuck said, sipping on the cocoa she said, âI know my Dad always has the best of intentions with everyone. He really does. But,â Chuck felt a bit crestfallen, âwhen May showed up, I felt like I was suddenly being shoved out the door. Like I donât matter now that she and her kids are here.âÂ
Chuck looked to her when she told that about her past, âIâm sorry, that had to be lonely.â Chuck bit one of her nails and said, âI donât think, I just, I donât know what to do.âÂ
âThere were plenty of homeless children in Cairo, we made a family of our own.â Â She gave the answer with a smile that kindly refused pity.
âYou can stay here tonight if you want to.â Â She would let Phil know so he wouldnât worry, for all he knew, Chuck could fly over the wall and disappear, since he didnât know what her powers were, aside from shorting out a light bulb. Â âThat way you can think about what you want to do before you see him again.â
Chuck nodded âIâd like that. Thank you Ms. Storm,â she sniffed and took a drink of her cocoa. She didnât hate her father. Not really. âAutodidacticism is highly underrated in my opinion â no offence to Storm, of course.â Â She wondered if Ororo wanted everyone under seventeen to forget that she never went to school either. Â âHave you got any skills or interests that might apply to a job around here? Â I think thatâs where you start, they train you from there.â Â That was what she had seen anyway. Â âI imagine your dad wouldnât want you signing up for anything outside the walls.â
Chuck shrugged, âI mean, I was pretty good at science in school.â She tried to think of something she could do. âNot that it would really apply here but I was in gymnastics and took Jiu-Jitsu tooâŠâ She kind of laughed, âitâs not like I can high kick my way through the apocalypse.âÂ
âI do, but only because I have these,â she slipped off her boot, it wasnât flexible enough to use her claws, and pointed her toes, releasing one of her foot claws. Â She retracted it and slid her shoe back on. âYou know the science is probably something they want a hand with. Â I think theyâre looking at one-on-one learning and apprenticeships for what you would have gone to college for back in the world.â
Chuck raised and an eyebrow and smiled, âThatâs a pretty handy tool to have in the apocalypse I could imagine.â She put her hands in her pockets. âThat sounds like something that could be my speed. âI hope you will continue to feel safe, Chuck. Â If there is anything I can do to aid you in feeling safe in future, you need only ask. Â And I feel confident that Lady Sif, who is here with me and is also a friend of your father, will offer the same.â Â Thor smiled warmly, âBecause you also have me as a friend now.â
Chuck grinned and said, âI really appreciate that, and you can consider me a friend too. I may not be able to do much, yet, but if you ever want to play with my dog, youâre more than welcome to.â She ran a hand through her wavy red hair and continued grinning.
He gave a small bow to her, âThe first steps are important as any other in our journey. Â I think you are off to a great start, Chuck Coulson.â Â He gave one final encouraging grin before he left her.
âThanks again for the help, Mr. Thor,â Chuck waived before heading off with Malcolm. Feeling a bit more confident in herself.

âNo not wrong.â Quick to reassure her Pepper offered a smile.  âThough I think I have a way for us to be helpful for each other.â  The apprenticeships slowly rolling out, instituting a new(old) way of learning that would hopefully fit with their new world.  âYou donât have to get up, we can sit to talk if you want.â Really she wanted Chuck to be comfortable.
âI donât know if you have heard, but we started working with young people past the basics in education to get something more hands on.  Learning one on one with already skilled individuals in fields of their choice.  Not everyone knows what they want right away so they can switch between jobs if needed.â  The simple explanation sheâd been using to introduce people to the new idea.  They couldnât send kids off to collage anymore after all.  More practical now to do it this way.
So, it was her dadâs doing, or it sounded like it. Malcolm nuzzled himself under her arm and looked up at her, sensing her anxiety about it. Looking to Pepper, Chuck chewed the inside of her cheek and asked, âI hadnât heard about it, but I donât talk to a lot of people here.â

âTo a certain extent, its unavoidable. I simply donât react the same way as someone in the same stage of physical development as I.â Isaac remained rather indifferent to that fact.  âI simply prefer it when people donât get all emotional about it.â Â
Excited about the activity Beaker ran too.  The half grown puppy tripping over his own feet.  Isaac kept careful watch over his pet.  He wanted the young dog to be . . well happy.  Dogs were not creatures of logic after all. Â

âI imagine he would put it together that it wasnât a coincidence,â Ororo agreed, moving to sit beside Chuck. Â âHe showed up at the X-Mansion in 1999 when our public face was exclusively a school for the gifted, based on a hunch that we were actually harbouring young superheroes.â
Ororo took a moment to sip her tea, her braids shifted with the slight movements. Â âI know that many people who have a parent who is passionate about their work feel the same as you. Â Even if this isnât what he intended, that doesnât change that itâs the way you feel about this.â Â Ororo sighed, âBut, I imagine that if you ask him, he did think he was putting you first. Â I imagine some of the times he stayed away were for your safety. Â That doesnât mean he always did the right thing, but Iâve seen enough superheroes try to leave the life to become parents, only to be drawn back in again and again.â Â
She smiled wryly, âI grew up without parents. Â But from what Iâve learned from my friends, one of the more difficult things about growing up is coming to terms with the fact that your parents arenât in control of everything. Â But with all that in mind, you still feel let down and lonely, and those feelings are real.â
