HAIR TALK: OBLONG FACE SHAPE
You want to make sure you are letting the cheekbones be clear and visible with an oblong shape. Here are some great ideas for all of you beautiful oblong girls!
RETRO-LIKE CURLS- Set the hair and give it some real bounce. The softness of a retro curl can make everything feel more “round” and less long even when it’s not. Curls are an amazing way to add width to your silhouette but always keep in mind you want width, not height with oblong!
SIDE SWEEP- As crazy as this sounds– ears help you gain width. Sweep all the hair over your shoulder and make sure you show an ear when there’s a lot of curl or texture going on. In the main photo above, if you cover Joans ears, the face appears much more narrow. When you see the ears it tricks your eye into thinking the face is a teeny bit wider than it actually is. Notice that Joan shows ear in just about every photo and that’s because her hair is cleared away from the face and that allows the cheekbones to come through!
WEAR EARRINGS- I know this isn’t a hair trick but it’s still a trick. Earrings that dangle near the sides of your face (especially ones that are close to your skins own tone) help to draw out the overall silhouette. Try lighter golds for pale skin and bronzy colors for darker skin. Sounds crazy but it works!!
WIDE WIDE WAVES- This may be where you need to learn how to flat iron curl. You can create a great wave pattern around your face with more control over where the waves hit when you use a beveled flat iron to do it. Hmmm… tutorial?? You want the widest part of the curls to hit right at your cheekbones. The hair should almost mimic the cheekbone, but be wider. If you look at the bottom right photo of Joan, you see that the widest part of the wave around here face is right around her cheekbone/ear area. Make that happen! You may have to spend a little time figuring out how to wrap the hair around a curling iron but it’s worth spending the time.
BLOWOUTS- Again, you’re seeking width, so set the hair however you like but keep it off the face. Give it a good warm burst of air around your face at the end and lightly hit your hairline with hairspray. Do what you can to keep the hair from hugging your face.
HAIRCUTS- Honestly, you’re not that limited on haircuts with an oblong face shape. The only thing you should really steer clear of is hard bobs that make you appear longer and really long sleek straight hair with no layers or movement. Everything else can be styled accordingly to create the illusion of a wider face.
CURLY GIRLS- As Carrie Bradshaw proved to the world, curly girls with oblong face shapes are the chic-est. Let those curls be if you have them! Allow them to be loose + wild + off your face to widen the overall sillhouette. You of course need a great haircut to manage major curls, but once you have that, you’re all set. Curly hair for an oblong face is ideal because of the horizontal volume it gets naturally.

HAIR TALK: RECTANGLE FACE SHAPE
Here are a few ideas for you gorgeous rectangle girls!
Layer away!: Adding lots of layers to a rectangular face shape can open you up in the cheekbone area while cutting many off the “four corners” at the same time.
Length matters: You never want to wear your hair super-long if you have a rectangular face shape. Excessive length only makes a rectangular face shape look longer.
Blowouts: Waves and curls are great for rectangular face shapes because width of the overall silhouette helps. In other words, go for a little more horizontal volume and steer clear of too much height. Major volume going upward also contributes to lengthening your face.
Updos: Severe, sleek updos can make your jawline corners look even stronger. If you’re okay with that, then go for it! If you’re trying to soften go with a more romantic wavy chignon. Higher updos will bring out your corners, where lower chingons will draw less attention to them.
Bangs: I’m not a huge fan of a square blunt bang with square or rectangular bangs with a square jaw because it tends to make everything very box-y. Instead, try a soft rounded line or a soft/parted “curtain bang (a la Brigitte Bardot!) If you need bang ideas, see here!
A-line cut: Just like with a square jaw, the corners of the jawline can be diffused by an a-line haircut. The longer length in front will weigh the hair down and lay closer to your cheeks, minimizing squareness. Then pair it with a long side bang to break up the usual “elongating lines” of a long bob. Try it with a little bend on the ends, too!
Are you working with a rectangular face shape? Hope this helped!

HAIR TALK: SQUARE FACE SHAPE
THE SQUARE: The goal with most face shapes we’ll talk about will be to either love it/embrace it/wear it proud like Olivia Wilde does in the bigger picture above with all of her hair pulled off of her face OR to do what you can to down-play your shape if it’s something that you don’t love. If you’re looking to down-play your square face shape, the goal will be to diffuse the 4 corners a little bit. Here are some great ways to do that.
SIDE SWEPT BANG- A soft, side swept bang that curves around (see bottom left photo) draws your attention more to the eyes instead of the corners of the jawline. That beautiful eye makeup doesn’t hurt either!
LOOSE NATURAL WAVES- With waves, you can create curves in all the right places. You can see how the hair curves in and diffuses the corners of Olivia’s jawline ever-so-slightly (see bottom left photo).
SLIGHTLY ANGLED LONG BOB (LOB)-The weight on a slightly angled bob is a tiny bit heavier up front near the face. That weight will keep the hair laying closer to your face and will also help down-play squareness.
CENTER PART- A center part will conceal the upper corners of your square shape. I love Olivia’s chignon here (see bottom center photo). The soft pieces that fall out in front lay lightly along the sides of her jawline which soften the square visually.
CHOPPY BANGS- I don’t usually recommend heavy blunt bangs for someone with a square face shape because it can make your jaw appear even more square, however if you want a heavier bang make them choppy and rounded on the sides (see bottom right photo).
PONYTAIL- This is the best way to wear a ponytail with a square face shape, in my opinion. The messy texture and loose, soft pieces in front allow you to play up the fact that you have a great jawline (consider yourself lucky because some of us don’t!) but the ponytail doesn’t look severe. It’s soft and feminine and works well with the harder lines of a square shape.
TOP KNOT- If you want to wear a top knot either just go for it and let that jawline shine or try pairing it with a “Bardot Bang” (which you can find it right HERE) to soften it up.
HAIRCUTS- No matter the length I always vote layers + waves, layers + waves, layers + waves! You can’t go wrong with pairing layers + waves with a square face shape because no matter how long or short, it softens the lines. If you have straight hair and a square face shape, ask your hairstylist to show you how to create some waves that flatter your face! If you have wavy or curly hair, lucky you.

HAIR TALK: OVAL FACE SHAPE
Let’s discuss some great hair options for the oval face, shall we?
UPDOS- Okay, this is the place where the ovals may have a slight advantage in the hair race. Playing around with new updos is ideal for someone with an oval face and is a little less work and here’s why– we always want to check proportion + balance in the mirror when doing an updo, but ovals don’t have to worry about off-setting a part of the face with extra volume or soft pieces falling in front like you do when you’re trying to soften a SQUARE jaw. Lucky for ovals, they can wear almost any updo, waves, chignon, braid or top knot– or in Eva’s case a super-chic satin tuban headpiece.
SIDE SWOOP- Heavy side swept bangs are nicest on an oval shape when there’s a little volume behind it, especially with an updo. With little or no volume behind a heavy side sweep, an oval face may appear “shortened”. If you’re really not a fan of volume behind your side swoop, try parting it a little more toward the center so it doesn’t shorten your face too much.
CENTER PART- In the image above (bottom, middle) you see that Eva tucks one side of her center parted hair behind her ear. If that piece were pulled out from behind the ear and both sides were running along her face it could actually make her oval face shape appear oblong. You don’t want to crowd an oval face shape because it will go narrow very quickly. Always try to keep at least one cheekbone clear.
BLOWOUTS- Go sleek, beachy/textured or voluminous. Again, whatever you do just don’t overcrowd the face!
HAIRCUTS- The rumor is that a true oval can pull off almost any haircut, but I’m here to demystify that theory. You have to think of your features! Face shapes aren’t the only important thing and a good hairstylist will make you aware of that. You have to consider other things– do you have a prominent nose? Do you have a weak chin? Do you have a long neck? Do you have wide set eyes? Do you have a short forehead? Do you have a large forehead? Do your ears stick out? Do you have a crazy cowlick? Do you have big/small eyes? I can keep going if you want… Just because you have an oval face shape doesn’t mean you can have any haircut so make sure it’s flattering for what you’re working with!
Hope this helped! :-))

FINDING YOUR FACE SHAPE
MAKE WAVES
Here’s how I do it.
Blow your hair out using a soft holding, volumizing mousse or blowdry foam. Recommend Mousse Nutri Sculpt by Kerastase, Full Thickening Mousse by Living Proof and “Mousse au Lotus Volumatrice” by Leonor Greyl.
Clamp + twist the flat iron 180° while holding the ends out in the opposite direction (as you see in photo 2). Spin the iron slowly, but quick enough so you don’t make dents. You basically want to clamp the iron and then “flip” it. Try using the iron on medium heat until you get really good at it. When you remove the iron you should have curve number one.
Just below curve number one, clamp the flat iron and spin it the opposite way.
Repeat the pattern again and again. Look at the middle picture– see how she places her finger and pulls from the top? That helps to not loosen the wave you’ve already created above. Check you wave each time you make a new curve. Make sure you’re liking the pattern and not getting dent. If you DO get dents, put a little water on the spot, let it air dry while you’re doing other pieces and come back to it once it’s dry. You have to put a little moisture back in before you can get a dent out. (I use a spray bottle and lightly mist the spot.)
Continue through the ends. I like to leave about an inch to an inch and a half out of the iron to let it be straight because I think that makes it look a little more modern.
Do the whole head. Once you get going it gets easier. Don’t break up the waves with your fingers until the very end. Let them cool in the patterns you’ve created.
Last but not least, add a little water-base pomade to your roots. The one used in this tutorial is by Oribe. Warm it up in your palms and then rub it in from underneath. This will help the waves stay “locked” and appear less frizzy. After your put it on the root, put whatever is left on your hands through the ends.
Good Luck!! :-))

SKIN FOOD: ACNE
Do you dread looking in the mirror in the morning because you’re afraid of finding another pimple? If so, the secret to getting clear skin might be what you’re eating. While there are several causes of acne (heredity, bacteria, clogged pores), If you’re struggling with breakouts, here’s how to eat for clear skin:
Got zits? If so, dairy is not your friend. Milk products (even organic) contain cow hormones that can be absorbed by your body. Dairy products stimulate your body’s own hormones, leading to oilier skin and clogged pores. Instead, try soy or almond milk in your cereal and coffee. If you must have your cheese or yogurt fix, at least choose organic, nonfat or skim milk products which contain fewer hormones. Just be sure to get your calcium elsewhere.
Avoid white carbs like sugar, bread, bakery items, pasta, white rice, and potatoes. Eating a diet that’s high in carbs can increase the level of androgens (the acne-causing “male” hormones that stimulate oil glands) after just one week. Carbs also make you bloat. If you are going to have carbs, pair it with a protein so you’ll eat less of it (for example, add chicken to your pasta or peanut butter to your whole wheat toast).
Eat more zinc-rich foods. Zinc has been shown to fight acne-causing bacteria, and is a natural anti-inflammatory. Zinc is found in lean red meat (especially beef and lamb) as well as lentils, kidney beans, and oysters. However, it’s best to avoid zinc supplements, since too much zinc can be toxic. It’s better to get your zinc by eating it.
MAKE YOUR LASH CURLING MORE EFFECTIVE + LAST LONGER
TOOLS:
Liquid liner — black will stand out the most obviously but you can certainly use brown. Benefit Magic Ink is used on this tutorial because it’s jet black and also one of the most user-friendly brushes for cat eyes.
Lash comb — this Sonia Kashuk Lash Comb that is a great buy.
Lash curler — use your favorite, mine is MAC Full Lash Curler because it gives the strongest pinch I’ve ever found to really flare the lashes.
STEPS:
Paint the teeth of your lash comb with the liquid liner by sweeping the brush along the tip to about halfway down. Don’t forget to paint both sides.
Comb through the upper lashes using upward strokes by starting at the roots and finishing at the tips. Paint both sides of the lashes as well.
At the critical moment when the liquid is drying, grab your lash curler and give them a proper pinch.Â
In this tutorial the eyes are made simple so you could really see the lashes, but feel free to put on your creative hat and add liner, shadow, etc!
