holy shit frankenstein [2025] was genuinely the best movie ive ever seen. i actually havent cried so hard or at all for a movie [or in general] in so, so long. i cant even form proper words for it i actually cried for the entire 2 hour runtime of the movie. everything about this movie hurts.

the creature, not frankenstein himself, is the modern prometheus. he brings fire, but is never warm himself. prometheus is said to be the giver of life, and in certain versions he is cited to create clay, and cultivated arts and knowledge within humanity. he is given the sentence of having his soul [liver] and emotions eaten away forever for caring about humanity. the fire symbolizes the warmth and growth of humans through compassion and caring. without either, people cant grow.

the creature is never given either, he is only introduced to warmth as the sun. victor never grants him this until he finally comes to understand that the creature is a person at the end. the only things the creature knows until his escape are the things "god" or "the gods" have made- the sun, water, fire. the life giver, the cleanser, and the killer. [maybe none of that made sense, but oh well. my head hurts]

the creature himself is prometheus, having to carry the torch for himself as he is never granted the mercy of being the gifted. victor says that he "gifted him life", but that's all he did. he made him live, he never taught him to survive, or love. to love is to carry the flame, and to gift to others what you never had. you have to learn love from the sidelines, from the gods, from your family. he learns that through the family, but every time he tries to make a human connection, the eagle eats his liver again. cursed to long for feeling yet never receiving it.

and no one ever cared for him the way he should have been cared for, and by not being born, he was never given the gift of a name. the first thing he learned was another persons name, and so was the second word he learned. he was the wretched gift of life, forced to hold the torch for everyone, to stand as a titan even though he was just a human. despite being made of nothing but corpses, he's still human. does the ship of theseus stop being a ship just because everything has been replaced?

Dropping the latest Sketch-a-Wish, voted on by my lovely Patreon members for April! A scene from The Wicked King by Holly Black, Cardan and Jude pledging their troth.

This scene was nondescript on the type of flowers that were blooming in the king's chambers as they were professing their vows to each other. But given how they were both adamant that their marriage would be utilitarian and short lived, I feel like the room blooming over head was a sign that it was more permanent than they realized, hence the wisteria and its meaning. 🤭
