Submissions are welcome and encouraged! I rate fish/aquatic animals on a scale of ten for 3 categories: Chunk, Funk, and Gunk.

Welcome to Chunk, Funk, Gunk! The o-FISH-al rater of water dwelling creatures by a simple scale. (Water dwelling meaning any creatures that live in water of any kind! Submissions are not limited to fish)

Now you may be asking yourself: How can EVERY water animal be rated accurately by only 3 categories? Well, you may be surprised to find out that every water animal fits comfortably within the 3 categories of Chunk, Funk, and Gunk!

Now you might be wondering what factors make up each of the different categories, so here is a brief explanation:

Chunk:

Body fat, Bone amount, How pleasant it looks like it would be to hold in my hands

Funk:

Coolness, Strangeness, Uniqueness, Funkiness

Gunk:

Slime, Mucous, just general Gunkiness

Submissions are always open and appreciated! As are Asks.

Since starting this account, I have added a new rating category, and I would like to explain it a little.

Overall Rating:

This is NOT an average of the other ratings. It is my personal rating for the fish on a scale of 1-10. This category is entirely subjective and just for fun!

It’s not at all a bother for me to answer questions you have, so don’t let anxiety get in the way if you have anything you’d like to ask.

I love it when people comment with facts and anecdotes about the animals I rate. I don’t usually know a whole lot about them and it’s super cool to hear about people’s experiences with the animals.

I live in an area with little access to bodies of water and the few that I do have access to only have about the same 12 fish in them. Please share your stories! It’s so cool to me

It’s been a long time coming, and anyone who’s been following this blog for any amount of time is well aware of my obsession with these funny wiggly boys.

Moray eels. My beloveds. Look at that girth, high chunk. The slime layer that makes it so that I cannot hug them without a proper wetsuit or fabric layer, absolute gunk. The big squishable cheeks, the weird sticky-out-y tube nostrils, the two mouths, incredibly funky.

Overall: 10/10

Everyone has a selfish dream of what they would do if they won the lottery. Mine is simple: buy a giant saltwater tank and fill it with 3 giant moray eels. (Preferably of different colors/patterns so I can tell them apart)

Everyone also has a dream of channeling their inner Disney Princess with a wild animal: I want to hug a moray eel.

It was my birthday on the 18th, so as a gift to myself, I rate my beloveds.

I drew this yesterday for day 16 of @montereybayaquarium art challenge but didn’t have time to write a proper caption.

This is the giant dragonfish which is a fish that may not exist at all. The giant dragonfish, as well as four other species, were described by naturalist William Beebe in 1932. Beebe descended into the depths of the ocean in the first bathysphere where he described several species he saw through a phone line leading to the surface. Scientific illustrator Else Bostelmann listened to his descriptions and through her quick illustrations we have a pretty good estimation of what Beebe may have seen. However, these five species, including the giant dragonfish, have never been seen or collected again. Many believe these five species were merely a hoax but there’s also the possibility that they’ve since gone extinct or are just extremely elusive like the celeocanth once was.

It’s not important to me whether this species ever existed. I see it as a symbol of what may remain hidden in the depths, just beyond our perception. The mystery of the giant dragonfish inspires us to keep seeking the hidden treasures of the ocean.

Oh geez, I didn’t know that would be an issue… I’m actually a relatively new Tumblr user so I don’t know the etiquette all that well yet.

The reason that I don’t have an icon is just because I wanted to design a logo for this blog but then I ADHD’d and now it’s been almost a year and I still don’t have one haha

Knowing that this blog not having an icon can make people worried is a big motivator for me to finally digitally render those logo sketches I made MONTHS ago lol

Though her bones hold her back from pure chunkiness, she is a round little creature that feels a lot like a waterbed— squishy but with a firmness to her. Like a bowling ball made of jelly. High chunk. My little stinky’s appearance is very odd. She has sunken in eyes and little patches of cream about them that make her look perpetually upset, unamused, or perturbed. Her paws are teeny tiny and I have many bruises in the shape of her stabby little feet all over my legs. She has oddly defined cheekbones for a cat, which add to the perpetual frown on her tiny face. Also her head is TINY. It’s like literally 4 inches wide. TINY. She looks like a pigeon. Also, she has a “W” on her chest, isn’t that neat? High funk. You’re probably wondering how a cat can be gunky. I mean, they don’t produce anything more than the normal mucuses of mammals? Well… Twix has IBS, so you can imagine… Some gunk.

Overall Rating: I would die for her/10

I’ve had Twix for about 7 years and I love her with all of my being. We (my family) found her dying of starvation in a shed at around 4 weeks old and now she is the dappled little bowling ball that you see here. She is my mimi-moomoo, my buubleewuublee, my little angel, my chunk, my chunky-monkey, my chunkadamunkadamunkadachunkada, and mi pequeñita rechonchita. I adore her.

For Easter, I thought it would be fitting to rate the sea bunny! These little guys are REALLY little, they’re less than an inch long- Since they’re nudibranchs, which by definition have no bones or shells, these squishy little fellas get maximum chunk. Sea bunnies are super recognizable and adorable with their little “ears” and “fur” (both are actually sensory organs), high funk. Nudibranchs are slimy little guys, and sea bunnies in specific are actually super slimy and poisonous, so of course they have maximum gunk.

Overall Rating: 10/10

They’re so cute, like- they’re SO cute- LOOK AT THEMMM!!!

Sorry for disappearing for a while again! Happy Easter (for those who celebrate) and happy pastel bunny day for all those who don’t!

Squarehead catfish!

They're ambush predators, hiding themselves in the soft substrate of their riverine and pond habitats and using their moveable barbels as bait. They're very dedicated to their disguise, not moving even when touched lightly!

These guys are so pretty- and apparently very dangerous! They’re very skinny (but probably squishy), low chunk. The colors, appearance, and diet are all super unique and cool. High funk. From my brief research, it seems like they have specialized mucous to neutralize the venom of man’o wars alongside using the venom themselves. High funk.

Overall Rating: 7/10

So cool! I love a sea creature with bright colors like this. It really is super funky how they eat one of the most dangerous creatures I know of.

Also I found a picture that claims to be a baby, but I know better than to trust one image when I can’t find any other evidence of them looking like this.

WOAh-

Look at these guys!! And I thought that the Longnose Lancetfish looked like something out of Subnautica…

They’re little jelly dudes, no bones. Technically they fall more under squishy or gelatinous than they do ‘chunky’, but not having bones gives them a lot of points (Plus I very much want to hold one in my hand). High chunk. Looking at these guys, they’re so very unique and their behavioral patterns are really interesting! High funk. Finally, they are little jelly dudes, of course they have gunk! In addition to that, they also secrete nets made of mucous in order to eat, so they most certainly are gunky. To be honest, I can’t figure out if they’re gunky enough for a maximum gunk rating. They’re definitely slimy and they definitely MAKE mucous, but I feel like a creature should secrete SLIME in order to get a full 10/10 gunk. Then again, I’m just not sure! What do you guys think?

Overall: 10/10

I want to hold one. I think they would feel like peeled grapes.

Oh! Fun fact from my research: these guys are NOT related to jellyfish! They’re actually closely related to people, since they’re in the family of “animals with backbones”.

(I mean, they don’t really HAVE backbones anymore, but nobody’s perfect.)
