Hubert-centric ficlet.

You sit right outside this door and stay, you hear me? Don't move. You're not old enough yet to see but you need to know what it sounds like—to learn, because this soon will be your work. It's a Vestra's duty.

There is a man on the other side of that door. That's all I'll tell you. What are you doing? Don't try to open and poke your head through. Maybe I'll let you see on your next birthday or when I notice you stop crying—don't give me that look, Hubert. I had to do the same thing you are now. And so did your grandfather and your great grandfather. It's who we are.

Now pass me that black box. Yes, you're allowed to touch it today but don't open it. When? Same day you stop crying. No Hubert, you will. I'll show you everything inside then. Trust your father, I'm trying to teach you.

What do you want for dinner? We'll have your favourite tonight, alright? As long as you listen to me and don't move from that spot. And you can't lie to me, these floors are made so I can hear if you run away. It's fine, sit however you want. And you can't cover your ears. Those are the two rules: stay here, and don't cover your ears. Good? Alright.

You're only a child so don't try to be tough, that will come with time.
