The hall their school had rented was beautifully decorated in classy chiffon along the walls and high ceilings, in gold and warm colors. Round tables elegantly laid in white, decorated with large bouquets of fresh flowers and silverware bordered a polished wooden dance floor. Disco balls splattered their bright pulses of light as empty plates were taken away and chairs were vacated in exchange for the night’s more energetic pursuits.
Eventually, with the influence of very lightly spiked punch to keep the young crowd going, the lights dimmed to the more romantic spectrum as the music switched tones.
Naruto let go of Sakura’s hands as they came out of a spin, both laughing uncontrollably. The blonde stopped on the edge of the floor and took a few steps back, watching as Sai took up the slack and pulled Sakura into a slow dance. Before she fully turned her attention to her new partner, she waved happily in Naruto’s direction, the biggest smile on her face.
Naruto returned that brightness, and then his eyes wandered until he found something else of interest; Hinata was rather shyly dancing with Kiba, her deep purple dress shimmering as Kiba gently pulled her along. They turned, and Hinata caught sight of Naruto, and when he winked she blushed and held onto her date tighter. Naruto was glad it had worked out in the end, and that she was happy. He was the way he was, and he couldn't change that, not even for a beautiful, kind girl like her.
Even Lee, who was still trying to bust moves to the light rock lull of Aerosmith’s 'I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing,' was enjoying himself even as Tenten interrupted her dance with Neji to yell in his ear. A few tables to Naruto’s left sat Shikamaru and Choji. Typical, Naruto thought to himself, until Temari walked back into the room—perhaps she had gone to the bathroom—and Shikamaru stood up and took her hand and they blended into the crowd. Seconds later, Ino dragged Choji away from his dessert.
All his friend were happy. Friends who, until quite recently, Naruto wasn't sure would accept how he was. And who he was with. The DJ changed into an even softer, more romantic song, and Naruto was about to lull back into his own mind when he felt someone come up beside.
“A handsome man like you shouldn't be the only one without a partner.”
Naruto looked up slightly to those beautiful, dark eyes he knew so well. Every fleck, every speckle, every deviation of color he had memorized, and even now in the low light he knew their owner. Then he looked down at the open hand before him and blushed.
“Care to have this dance?” Sasuke asked. His voice had gotten deeper in the last few months especially, and Naruto always felt it in his chest, as if Sasuke’s voice was his own. It was calming, and if it could taste like something it would definitely be honey, though not for its sweetness alone. There was something slightly spicy to it that played with Naruto in just a certain way.
Despite accepting the gesture, the blonde said, “But everyone’s watching.”
Sasuke drew his boyfriend forward and they slipped through the pairs of other people and found a spot somewhere near the center that felt safe. He cradled Naruto’s hand and pressed the other into the small of his back, pulling them together.
Around them the classic voice of Foreigner made it impossible for Naruto to resist:
‘Now this mountain I must climb, feels like the world upon my shoulders
Through the clouds I see love shine, it keeps me warm as life grows colder’
“Everyone already knows,” Sasuke easily replied, starting to sway back and forth.
“I thought you didn't like this sort of thing…” Naruto argued weakly. He was already red in the face and enjoying himself too much to be able to handle if Sasuke changed his mind. He loved being this close, and they rarely did it in public so it was a real treat.
“I don’t. But you’re an exception.” Sasuke smirked, and Naruto knew he was doing more than forcing himself for his sake; he was here despite being adamant about avoiding such occasions, and he was happy doing it. For one reason. Naruto was sure he was no longer on Earth anymore, he was floating somewhere up there in the clouds and nothing else mattered except the young man in front of him.
‘I'm gonna take a little time, a little time to look around me
I've got nowhere left to hide, it looks like love has finally found me’
“This year’s been so hard,” Naruto said, choking right away. Sasuke pressed their foreheads together as he continued to lead them. “I’m so happy we made it after everything.”
“Couldn’t have made it without you.” The words came easy for Sasuke when a year ago he would have tried to create distance at the slightest insinuation of intimacy. Now he craved it. Not from everyone, but it was Naruto who had taught Sasuke to open his heart again to the people that truly mattered. He owed him a lot more than his heart.
‘In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far, to change this lonely life’
The emotions, thick and sticky and pleasant, naturally drew the two young men together into a slow, deep kiss. No one stopped them. No one pulled them apart and hit them. No one yelled or spat in their faces. If anything, surrounded by their friends, Naruto and Sasuke felt like they could be themselves.
‘I want to know what love is, I want you to show me
I want to feel what love is, I know you can show me’
“I love you,” Naruto said, their lips just coming apart enough to say the words.
Sasuke searched Naruto’s eyes, mouth opening but nothing coming out. They were so close that they couldn't see anything but each other’s faces, yet Sasuke was acutely aware of everything around him, how his world seemed to come together in that instant with total clarity. And when Naruto’s brow suddenly knit together in concern, the Uchiha quickly composed himself before his boyfriend got the wrong impression.
“Usuratonkachi…of course I love you, too…”
‘And I'm feeling so much love, I want to feel what love is
No, you just can't hide, I know you can show me’
“Sasuke…” Naruto breathed, and gently lay his head against Sasuke’s shoulder. His eyes slipped shut as Sasuke cradled him and lulled him with his gently swaying.
