remembering little details about them, like what their coffee order is or that random thing they said last tuesday. it's the cutest.

them looking at you first after a joke to see if you're laughing too.

^ any form of intense eye contact in group settings

a subtle, but knowing eyebrow raise/smirk/smile

nicknames rooted in a small moment from when they were getting to know each other - they just stuck

sharing clothes, especially hoodies and jackets

when they make playlists for each other, or have one of music the other likes

someone learning how to braid just to do the others' hair

the pinky reach when they're either about to hold hands for the first time, or are trying to subtly reach for the other's support

absentmindedly tracing shapes on their hand/leg/etc

fake dating prompts/scenarios for my romance novel girlies

has anyone actually pretended to date for extended periods before??? how did that go...

"you know, you actually have to touch me in order for this to be convincing."

"they left, you don't have to pretend anymore." and the other one's face falls... :(

"we stopped pretending a long time ago, [name]. you know it, i know it, and i can't watch you pretend you want to make that loser jealous."

one is trying to make their ex jealous, and the other mutters something to the effect of: "they don't even know what they have"

"wow, i see why everyone’s so obsessed with you now." (sarcastically - this feels very high school popular guy...)

"admit it! you're enjoying this more than you expected." (when one drags the other to something they enjoy, in order to seem convincing)

"why are you actually good at this... do you pretend to date people often?"

"nice job. i'm impressed."

"you owe me. big time."

"we're actually pretty good together."

one guiding the other's hand to their waist/small of their back/etc in order to make it convincing

accidentally calling the other babe when no one is around because it felt so natural. (bonus: the other hearing and not saying anything about it)

celebrity fake dating--in order to enhance one's image, but realizing that so much more lies beneath their persona

^^ RED CARPETS, interviews - being forced to say nice things about them but realizing that it feels like the truth, and not pretend

they had to share a hotel room, and beyond the one bed trope, seeing the other in such an intimate setting does something unexpected to them

having an oddly specific stipulation in their "contract," like having to buy the other coffee every week or going to their games

meeting each other's families, either accidentally and intentionally, and learning embarrassing stories about them (which will certainly be put to use later...)

high-tension romantic scenarios to get lost in

fixing each other's collar/zipper/tie/etc - getting unexpectedly close, breath catching when they realize (or their light touches burning into the other's skin)

^ also moving someone's hair out of their face/behind their ear

^ or touching someone's necklace/bracelet/watch

eye contact in a crowded room, but not exchanging any words/expressions - just looking at each other, the rest of the world going still.

^a(n unironic) wink in this situation. or an eyebrow raise, lick or bite of lips, or head tilt. there's something in the subtlety of it - like "this is between us"

pulling someone in by their belt loops??? this is so random idk

feeling the other's breath/lips ghosting their neck

any sort of whisper. anywhere. goddamn.

a long pause when someone is speaking, as though they lost their train of thought while looking at the other person

their bodies accidentally pressed together - being stuck in a small space, falling onto one another, or having to sit really close together. the pause when it's realized.

&( X is sweet; their hands are gentle and patient as they scrub Y clean, hands running as warm as a furnace even compared to the water. X keeps up a running commentary of their day, and the neighbors, and their coworkers, while crappy pop music blares through their phone halfway across the room. they press kisses into Y's spine, or Y's shoulder, and sometimes they just grab Y's hand to kiss their knuckles.

&( X buys a shower stool so that Y can sit down and relax while X washes them.

&( X keeps their hand carefully positioned over Y's forehead so that no water leaks onto their face while X washes their hair.

&( the rag X uses on Y is so sudsy it looks like a sponge.

&( X is utilitarian; they scrub Y down from head to toe very efficiently. it isnt quite painful, but it is the kind of pressure thats hard enough to linger. the only break in their indifferent demeanor is when they, while washing Y's hair, smooth it into a mohawk. X smothers a laugh.

&( water beads in X's eyelashes; they squint harshly as they work.

&( X has anxiety about being alone after a dangerous situation, so Y chills in the bathroom with them while they wash themself. unexpectedly, an injury flares up, preventing X from washing their hair properly. Y crouches by the bath and does it for them. finally, X is able to relax.

&( X falls asleep in the bath under Y's loving touch, promptly going limp, which scares the shit out of Y. "how do you fall asleep in the bath?!?!!!!! you couldve drowned!!!" "i dont know!!!! im sorry!!!! im awake now!!!!!"
