First off, GIGANTIC CREDIT to @intrstellarisms and their BOMBASTICALLY FANTASTIC Coltland fic <based on a true story>. This mini-comic exists because of it and it is specifically based on chapter 2 <The buoy>. Please check out the fic here!!

really worked my ass off this(literally, I got rashes from sitting too long in a humid and hot environment) but I am just so obsessed with the fic that I feel compelled to create something for it. I really want to capture that constant melancholy and hurt present in the Coltland twins dynamic when grace is sent away. A perpetual hollow in Colt's heart where it makes all his memory with Ryland dreamy and fairy-tale like.

The recommended song <obstacles> by Syd Matters is also from the recommendation in the original fic. (Honestly the fic is like the age of enlightenment for me）

sorry if this doesn't rly have a nice flow and if the arrangements are a bit hard to read(My friend beta read this for me and that's her feedback), it's my first time trying to draw comic and I think I'm still a bit stuck on the static fanart mindset. (oh and i'm gonna add this into the 100 days drawing challenge hehe(13/100) Pls feel free to throw in any feedback on it as well!!

Photo drawing practice is BACK!

Watched Bladerunner the other day(was going thru gosling movies) and find the colors of the film incredible, so here we are! Ironically this is also ryan in a car so *drive music plays* in any case the hard part of this one is the rain effects but surprising it is rly enjoyable to draw. start with the general color grading and then use markers(cuz it have to be hard on the edges) and dark colors to create the window texture. splash some dark dots onto it, blur the whole thing, and create a new layer to use markers in white ish for the rain traces+splash more dots) Drew the bg first this time and it rly motivated me as it sets the mood so well. gotta do this in the future too. ALSO I TOTALLY FORGOT TO DRAW THE TOP RIGHT CORNER HELP????used my mouse to try and save it, not the best i can do but wtv

I am totally buying the Coltland Twins propaganda

It's like the cutest thing EVER!!!! I can totally imagine Colt being the protective big brother and grace is the smart little brother, the fact that they are twins makes it even better(Like they have some fated connections with each other). But if you follow canon it's quite sad so i decided not to think about it for the time being.(alr read like 3 hurt no comfort fic on coltland this aft and i have cried enough internally)

Notes to self: full body drawing prac, didnt have much energy today(could it be cuz i was doom reading ao3 on my bed lol) so opt for a simpler style and focused on getting the proportions right(dis wrong in the end anyways lmao), haven't drawn a full body in sooooo long so this is a good rehab. This time the rendering process is much simpler with just base color+deepest shadow+complementary colors(Yes accidenttaly added green in the red jacket and it became the best jacket i have ever drawn) same thing with the jeans added some yellow in it and it's fire. Overall a piece i rly enjoyed drawing cuz both of them r so cute hehehehehehe

I keep thinking about how Stratt was feeling when she tells Grace this.

After revisiting the movie I realised Grace must have meant a lot to Stratt too, not just as another colleague in the taskforce, but on a whole other level. In the novel(which i am revisiting too after reading it 2 year ago), the og crew for hail mary and almost the entire scientific team thought Grace has something going on with Stratt, and Yao called Grace Stratt's "number two" so I thinks sending Grace away is really hard for Stratt too. For Grace is not only the hope(and the fire) for mankind, but also the 'fire' for stratt. It's lowk like sending away your favourite pet(if that makes sense).

But Stratt has no choice, she has to let go.

Some notes on the process

Spent ard 8hrs on this(SUPER LONG), mostly bc I don't have a exact ref so I have to play ard with the lighting very much. And i keep swinging between applying the coloring straight(usually i do that with 1:1 photo drawing prac or do a base and do multiply for shadow and overlay for light. eventually did both and it turned out okay but really wasted me a lot of time trying to figure out how to get the best effects(as i never learnt color theory). Will need to streamline my workflow in the future.

For my own ref: 1. different parts base color-->2. draw out the darkest shadows and the grey areas-->3. applies new overlay layer for lighting-->4. create another normal layer to tune the details (at least this is the flow for this piece)

another photo study for phm(I am obsessed). always liked this scene. It symbolises despair but for some unfathomable reason it gives me hope. Two people running towards the fireball in the distance which is like earth's dying sun.

Spent 4 hrs on this but I think it's quite well spent.

First photo drawing exercise that is NOT base don the og photo color scheme. tried to render the lighting in a completely different way(so now I guess it looks like sunlight instead of cold lab lights?) Partially failed and took way longer than it should be(honestly a sign for me to learn color theory but) i'm glad it turned out relatively okay(I feel like i need to prac rendering the folds too it's so diff from my lineart)
