knowing that the past tense of "hang" is "hanged" when it's a method of execution can be very entertaining because you'll be watching a horror movie and someone goes "local legend says a woman was hung in these woods" and you're like "👀 good for her I guess"
“Cassandra woke up to the rays of the sun streaming through the slats on her blinds, cascading over her naked chest. She stretched, her breasts lifting with her arms as she greeted the sun. She rolled out of bed and put on a shirt, her nipples prominently showing through the thin fabric. She breasted boobily to the stairs, and titted downwards.”
quick tip from someone who has been in fan spaces for 20 years: being enthusiastic about your rarepair and making your own stuff/engaging your fellow rarepair shippers will ALWAYS work better than yelling at people who enjoy a more popular ship about how bland their ship is

Jing Yuan, my Wife by friedchickenlord
my summary: crackfic; dan heng and blade both believe that jing yuan was their past life's wife
my review: so cute, so humorous and by god, so creative?? i want to lick friedchickenlord's brain because the unreliability of memory has so much potential to be explored in renhengjing. although friedchickenlord does not take the concept too seriously, the fic is honestly better for it. do check it out for a good time!
Water On Your Skin [Your Lips On Mine] by Saunne
my summary: post-canon fix-it of sorts; jing yuan has chronic pain, blade and dan heng take care of him
my review: Saunne invites us into their exploration of their post-canon happy ending. i adore their soff jing yuan and the gentle care that blade and dan heng lavish him with. an indulgence that can only be likened to eating a whole tub of ice cream in the middle of a winter night. exposition heavy, you have been warned.
egg('s father) hunt by HazielArkwright
my summary: crackfic; yingxing and dan feng argue over who is the father of jing yuan's egg
my review: hilarious, sweet, adorable. this fic is so cutieful. and i love yingxing and dan feng fighting over jing yuan.
angsty stuff that feels good (good ending / hopeful ending)
only the mountain remains by questioningly
my summary: time-travel fix-it au; jing yuan goes back in time and changes the past. yingxing and dan feng notice a difference..
my review: how does questioningly manage it? i must know. the story is told largely from the pov of dan feng and blade and yet jing yuan's loneliness and heartbreak, it practically seeps from the pages. this is my favorite of all of questioningly's jing yuan fics and a comfort go-to i have re-read 15 times. please, if you have yet to read it, treat yoself.
An Anecdotal Desire by Dacia
my summary: abo alpha/alpha; alpha!blade goes into rut and beta?dan heng and alpha!jing yuan help him through it.
my review: all of dacia's renhengjing fics are amazing and wonderful, but this is far and away my favorite. i was crying as i read this and didn't stop sobbing long after i finished it -- i slept very little that night. dacia's characterisation of jing yuan and their description of his thought processes is amazing and absolutely top notch. i re-read this fic frequently. i cannot recommend enough. legendary. note, intersex dan heng with both AFAB and AMAB genitals.
The Pause Between Eternities by Dacia
my summary: xianxia influenced canon divergence; blade and dan heng put their differences aside to provide magical healing dick for a marastruck jing yuan lost in the past
my review: very hot and also heartbreaking. dacia is a god. i worship the ground they walk on.
komorebi by Dacia
my summary: pre-canon; yingxing and dan feng make a move on the youngest, most critically low self-esteem, endlessly self-sacrificing member of the hcq
my review: make me cry then get me off, then leave me crying. a wonderful exploration of jing yuan's mind while also being fucking sexy. thank you dacia for the meal.
“And so the sun burnt out…” by Velvet_Stars
my summary: canon compliant?; jing yuan comes home to a not so empty house.
my review: part three in a three part series, i can shamelessly admit that this is my favorite of them. an aching, tender exploration of how lonely jing yuan is, with a generous helping of comfort.
Severed Bonds (Endure) by Velvet_Stars
my summary: soulbond abo au, jing yuan who had soulbonds with yingxing and dan feng, now must contend with the broken soulbonds he has with their reincarnations
my review: for me this fic is an indulgence and all the more enjoyable for it. dynamics don't really factor much in this so if you are hesitating because of the alpha and omega gender designations, you have nothing to worry about.
angsty stuff that feels bad (bad ending / hanging ending)
look at the light through the windowpane by amortise (annuities)
my summary: pre-canon; jing yuan watches everyone die
my review: a fantastic exploration of pre-canon xingfengjing through jing yuan's eyes. fuck what is there not to love about this. amortise renders grief so well it is practically tangible; i can taste it -- it tastes like salt because it's my fucking tears.

An Essay on the Causes and Effects of a McRomance by MythicalDerp
my summary: underpaid service industry workers meets mafia au fluff and crack; blade, a hitman, and jing yuan, a triad boss, meet as mcdonalds workers.
my review: this fic is very cute and very funny. sometimes i will think of this fic unbidden and smile, and maybe onlookers think i am indulging in fond nostalgia but no i am thinking of renjing mcdonalds mafia au and i can never tell anyone. please read it so i can tell you.
The perils of (not quite) one night stands by AnonLearnsToWrite
my summary: pre-canon fluff and crack; yingxing bemoans his fate at jingliu's hands after getting together with jing yuan
my review: featuring protective jingliu, cutely oblivious jing yuan who does not know how loved he is, whipped yingxing. A D O R A B L E
Another road traveled by AnonLearnsToWrite
my summary: canon divergent fluff and crack, with a touch of angst; blade stays on the luofu post-sedition
my review: funny, cute, wholesome. this is like the best everything is beautiful and nothing hurts imagination of canon.
Falling, One (espresso) Shot at a Time by jingrenism
my summary: coffeeshop au; barista jing yuan has a crush on a gloomy customer
my review: so so so so cute. so sweet. like a trendy dessert that lives up to the hype. jing yuan is pathetic in this and i live for it.
Lost and Found by penstrokesandmusicnotes
my summary: pre-canon cute shit; jing yuan and yingxing have a chance meeting, twice
my review: oh my god adorable. i love angst, but it is pre-canon sweet stuff like this that makes the angst hurt all the more you know? no angst in this, don't worry. nothing but precious.
Domestic Bliss by penstrokesandmusicnotes
my summary: domestic fluff, blade ruins laundry and burns dinner for jing yuan. yanqing is an angel.
my review: i love this fic so much, it makes me squee and kick my feet. i click the kudos button every time and scowl at the "you have already left kudos here". renjing fics tend to be very angst heavy (i stand guilty of contributing), so this is a lovely change of pace.
angsty stuff that feels good (good ending / hopeful ending)
A Haunting in the Alchemy Commission by Staraxia
my summary: canon compliant angst; jing yuan wakes up after the battle with phantylia and into another trial
my review: i actually don't know whether to categorise this as feels good or feels bad, because when i was done reading this i remember crying like someone had died. a deeply moving exploration of yingxing and jing yuan's relationship as jing yuan remembers it, and very interesting exploration of the aeons and the hsr world at large.
pierce me 💘 by seas_tones
my summary: jing yuan, who has a fear of needles, asks blade to pierce his ears.
my review: this is not explicit, no not even mature. but why did it make me horny. rhetorical, because i know, it is the trust. it made my heart horny. augh.
Broken Infatuation by sunsubdued
my summary: idol au; choreographer blade and idol jing yuan have a not really unrequited romance separately
my review: you would think that canon compliant not really unrequited is about as angsty as it gets, but sunsubdued is here to prove. you. wrong! they do this thing where they tell the same story from two pov, and manage to keep it from feeling repetitive -- some people are so powerful. there's even a generous helping of domestic fluff for the ending. it is beautiful it is delicious, what are you waiting for?
I was housed by your warmth by onyasuminyasai
my summary: modern au; in an authoritarian hong kong, blade and jing yuan try their best to raise yanqing and keep their little family safe
my review: onysuminyasai has a talent for storytelling. the picture they painted of this au is so well-done. their depiction of an authoritarian regime and the struggle that blade and jing yuan go through... it is so realistic it is horrifying. genuinely at some points i was nauseous. it's not gory... just the horror that is reality. i was so awestruck by this fic, i spent a week telling all my friends about it when i was done reading. a masterpiece.
wishing on a comet by scheinen
my summary: canon compliant; blade visits yingxing's old house and bumps into jing yuan
my review: the story is refreshing for the fact that blade actually uses the front door for once, but also for scheinen's interpretation of the stellaron hunters movements, both interesting interpretations that i feel are seldom explored. the story itself is heartwrenching and lovely. jing yuan is so very human in this and it makes me ache.
moonlight spilled down the hall by bittersweetResilience
my summary: jing yuan has a dissociative episode. blade takes care of him.
my review: bittersweetResilience owns dissociative!jing yuan. their description of the mindspace is compelling and relatable and blade's care of jing yuan is so gentle and tender. this story is a warm experience, like a hot cup of tea after being out in the cold.
tell me we'll never get used to it by bittersweetResilience
my summary: angsty smut, jing yuan has a nightmare and blade comforts him
my review: have you ever had a hard-on for sad? no? well are you in for an experience. this is equal parts devastating and horny. features AFAB!jing yuan, but as i recall, it is not explicitly mentioned, although there is art attached. note: consensual somnophilia.
Parasitism by proosh
my summary: canon divergence; phantylia turns jing yuan into a vampire and blade feeds him
my review: an interesting concept, excellently executed. i did not think i would ever goon to gore but proosh made this really fucking sexy for something very fucking disturbing which has no sex in it at all. i blame the inherent intimacy in the devouring of a loved one, sigh.
i want a pair of hands waiting for me at the end by cuefog
my summary: major character death; jing yuan prepares for death and fulfills one last promise
my review: holy fuck, this fic. it is so good and so sad. so well written, and both blade and jing yuan are perfectly characterised. prepare to cry, i know i did.
Restart? by gwendee
my summary: game come to life trope, jing yuan's life told through a series of options
my review: the format alone makes this fic a technical masterpiece, adding gwendee's excellent storytelling and knifepoint characterisation of jing yuan to it, it becomes a compelling work of art.
anywhere you want me by questioningly
my summary: post-canon; before the beginning of the end, jing yuan and blade take a road trip through space
my review: in the realm of jing yuan fic, questioningly is a heavyweight champion and this is their kingdom. but even so they have outdone themselves with this masterpiece. this fic was thrilling, bamf!jing yuan has me salivating, and the ending is so beautifully sweet. legendary
Lycoris radiata by oktsukki
my summary: slowburn canon divergence; jing yuan has hanahaki and joins the stellaron hunters.
my review: jing yuan suffering through unrequited love for some 20,000 words is all i ever want and boy oh boy does oktsukki deliver. it is angsty, it is sad, it is fucking delicious and it has a happy ending. what more can a jing yuan lover ask for?
and though the branch is olive by oktsukki
my summary: old man yaoi; a dying blade reconciles with a retiring jing yuan
my review: oktsukki does it again with a fantastic characterisation of both blade and jing yuan. their furious jing yuan is very well portrayed and jing yuan with an edge is so grr, bark bark. don't get me started on the ending, which is just lovely. the dynamic in this is top jing yuan, which i don't usually enjoy, but the conversation blade and jing yuan have before during and after the sex is... chef's kiss.
angsty stuff that feels bad (bad ending / hanging ending)
Andvari's Right Hand (安德瓦利断手) by 潮雾 and translated by Staraxia
my summary: canon compliant angst; jing yuan picks up a collectors item
my review: this is an English translation of a Mandarin work and by god staraxia does a fantastic job at translating. the story is compelling and heartbreaking, and translation lends the fic a dreamlike detached quality that adds to the atmosphere. reading this feels like a religious experience. though i get too sad when i read it so i have to space out my re-reads...
大鱼 by bittersweetResilience
my summary: major character death, canon divergence; jing yuan prepares to die to phantylia and does.
my review: bittersweetResilience is a reigning monarch in the renjing fandom, who always delivers a gut-punching heart-wrenching angst experience in their interpretation of renjing, and out of their impressive body of work, 大鱼 has got to be their magnum opus. not only is it a compelling exploration of jing yuan's character, but also a glorious composition, the way bittersweetResilience tells this in non-chronological scenes and ties it all together in a magnificent crescendo. prose heavy, but goddamn is it good prose. re-read frequently. a legend.
if the idea of a bad end stresses you out / if you read 大鱼 and you need healing because it left you broken, bittersweetResilience has generously blessed us with an alternate ending: 起风了. it will fix you, trust.
浮生若梦 by bittersweetResilience
my summary: major character death canon divergence; blade attends jing yuan's funeral
my review: wuuu this exploration of yingxing / blade and jing yuan's relationship, it guts me. thank you bittersweetResilience because i fucking love major character death and because of you i eat so well.
the way it makes you by bittersweetResilience
my summary: modern au; jing yuan attempts suicide
my review: you know depression, now know depression in the third person. bleak and depressing, i needed this more than water. please enjoy with caution for your own mental health.
'till life do us part by reverieofstars
my summary: major character death; jing yuan prepares to die and does.
my review: a tender, aching three-part character study, practically a love letter to jing yuan, and by god, oh-so-sad. i adore this series and i re-read it from time to time. it is prose heavy, so if that is not your thing, consider yourself warned.
"You!" Blade growls, voice full of untold threat, "Why did you participate in the battle with Irontomb?"
Jing Yuan pauses at the threshold of his front doors, feeling somewhat wrongfooted in his own home and fairly resentful of it. "Could I interest you in some tea?" he recovers enough to offer politely, "I have a lovely jasmine variety that the Yuque just sent over to congratulate us on the victory."
Blade lets loose a string of colorful curses that would surely make the ears of a Zhuming native burn, but Jing Yuan only takes a seat in one of the armchairs, leaning back in a relaxed slouch and unbuckling his bracers and pauldrons, shrugging them off as he meets Blade's glare with a placid expression. "I take it you are not interested in the tea."
"Fuck the tea," Blade roars, "why are you trying to die?"
