𝒔he never quite knows what to expect when she visits the church; the discrepancies between here & the outside world continuously bring her back, a siren song to which she listens. there is a way of ease, a feeling of comfort upon arrival. it is something fantine questions, while all the same thankfully accepting it. the eyes of God watch from every glass window, the Virgin's open arms ready to embrace.

she feels safe. her weary soul feels at rest. she enters the room in the back, where he practices.

it was not only the building itself. that much was apparent.

❝ you were? ❞

she knows very little of music, even less about choosing compositions, but even still, he had accepted them earnestly when she was bold. she would listen to anything he played, there was no doubt.

fantine smiles. her jaw aches faintly from it, unused to the invoking of any sort of joy for so long. is this what it felt like to finally have good company?

❝ they were the ones I always thought were most pretty from past services... ❞

her hands tighten the shawl around her shoulders. fantine's gaze drops to the floor.

❝ I hope you have been keeping well. ❞

Just seeing her face - her smile - makes his weary soul a little lighter. It swells up as a warmth inside him - in his chest- and spreads all through his body upon looking at her - being near her. Her presence alone is soothing to him, though it mystifies him, but he has long learned to simply allow it to happen. It gives him peace to think - to just exist.

" I believe we have quite similar tastes.. " He chuckles, averts his gaze, almost shy - though they return to her again, softer this time. There is so much he wishes to share - so much to tell - to listen - and show her. Nicolae's gaze stays on her bowed head for a moment just to look, hesitant to be too abrasive.

"Ah - you know how it is.. I have been keeping busy." Pause, he folds his hands to keep them close by. "And how about you, my dear?"

His voice was steady, his eyes fixed on the other man. The new Patriarch's clawed fingers tapped absentmindedly on the railing, appearing much like a cat assessing a new situation with newfound curiosity.

It had been five months since his ascension. Five months which had ( in his mind ) been many many years in the making. Yet- a leader's work is never done, nor is it a wise decision not to greet your guests upon their arrival. So he did - as he had been taught - descending the stairs fully after a long moment of faux contemplation.

A smile spread across his face, not quite reaching his eyes ( yet ).

" Please, do tell me- How was your journey?"

" Ah, you're early! " Nicolae looked up from his sheet music, broken out of thoughts of phrases and harmonies. A smile crossed his face, warm, inviting. He was glad to see her - and it showed. Hands on his knees, he stood up from the piano.
