Keeping Yara’s order to call him when he was alone in mind, Sal considered staying downstairs for a majority of the night. Waiting for everyone - from the kids to Eve - to fall asleep so he could have the opportunity to do so. Sal thought he could have been planted on the couch as if nothing was not of the ordinary. After all, from Zorro to Gilligan’s Island, Sal loved finding late night reruns to watch. Then, Sal thought, when he was absolutely certain Eve was asleep, he would call Yara and find out just what the hell was going on between her and his wife.
His plan almost worked. Almost. Come midnight, Eve was standing in the stairway - looking down at her husband, asking him ‘wasn’t he going to bed?’ He lightly put up a fuss, talking about how he would be missing content from these childhood shows he missed out on, but ultimately unwilling to argue, Sal followed her upstairs.
So, Sal told himself that his new plan would revolve around not sleeping, but laying in bed beside Eve. Then, when certain that she was in a deep slumber, he would slip off the mattress. Laying there, Sal additionally assumed he could use the wireless telephone in the bathroom, for a good measure.
But this wouldn’t happen easily.
12:30 AM. In her sleep, Eve rolled over to face him. They were too close, Sal thought. Too much movement would doubtlessly wake her up. 1:15 AM. Eve’s arms wrapped around him and with a soft groan, she pressed her cheek against his chest. It wasn’t an unusual act, but Sal couldn’t believe his luck.
1:33 AM. Oh shit...he found himself asleep for a few seconds. Basically asleep.
When rubbing his eye with his left hand, he would see that Eve continued to remain against him and apparently, at some point in his unconscious state Sal outstretched his right arm for her comfort. Analyzing her features in the dark, he reaches the assumption that she definitely is in a deep slumber now. And even if she’s not? Well, he’s going to take his chances on getting out of this room.
Gradually, he withdraws his stretched arm. She doesn’t make any kind of reaction. He lifts himself with a low grunt and pulls his legs to the edge of the bed. Still, his eyes have yet to go off her. Sal can see that Eve has, on some level, recognized movement but in the end, it seems not to bother her. She simply stirs a little.
Even with all of this done, walking away is anything but the easiest thing, for Sal is conscious of the floorboards potentially creaking beneath his feet.
Now, with that heavy, brick-like phone against his ear, Sal sits atop the toilet seat waiting for Yara to answer. He also thinks if he has to do all of this to make a measly phone call, imagine what sort of hoops he would have to go through if he was screwing around.
“So what’s goin’ on?” Sal ( sleepily ) asks the minute Yara answers, “Why am I hidin’ out in my bathroom talkin’ t’you at two in the mornin’?” Well, he thinks it’s basically two in the morning. // @bloodstainedjewels
