Marine debris is one of the top threats to marine life. Many people like to celebrate or memorialize by releasing balloons. While it is a beautiful gesture, this action is very dangerous to marine life. Once the balloons pop or deflate, many end up in the ocean where they may look like food for some animals. These balloons than end up in their stomachs or tangled around them, often becoming deadly. Marine mammals, like dolphins and manatees, live in a marine environment. They spend all of their time in the water. September 18th is Water Monitoring Day. In many communities most street drains lead to the waterways, whether it be lakes, rivers, or even the ocean. You can do your part to protect marine mammals by making sure that trash doesn’t make its way down those drains! August is fishing month! Did you know that it is actually illegal and harmful to feed wild dolphins your catch or left over bait? Dolphins are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act which makes it illegal to feed, swim with, or harass any type of wild marine mammal. Dolphin Research Center has a commitment to conservation. Every distance learning presentation includes conservation information! Earlier this month was Plastic Bag Free Day. Did you know that plastic bags are within the top 10 items found in the ocean that shouldn’t be there? Plastic bags are harmful to a variety of marine life including dolphins. When it’s time to start class and the kids are lingering
6 Tools I’m Trying Out Next Year
The idea of Matt Miller’s post “I just can’t do it all: The connected educator letdown” really resonated with me. It talked about only incorporating one or two things a year, because trying to take on every new gadget and gizmo could lead to burnout. Seeing that reflected in another teacher’s experience lifts the pressure off of my shoulders when giving myself the freedom to pick and choose, and try new things; knowing that, if something wasn’t working, I could put it on the back shelf for next year. There are thousands of websites, programs, and other materials out there for teachers to use. These tools can enrich, inspire, and manage a classroom better. However, trying to add 12 different tools at once can bog a teacher down.
A big goal for myself next year is standards based grading. A gradebook with standards-based columns and grades out of 4 is going to be better for my students, their parents, and me. This year I have stumbled across a number of different websites and tools that I can’t wait to incorporate into my class. Most of these may not be new to everybody, but a few may be new to somebody, and that’s good enough for me. Stick around this next school year as I post about using these tools in my class.
