There is a difference between professional and whitewashing imo. Democrats are coming out talking about their personal connections to this guy - which is not necessary. A professional statement can be as easy as "We wish all the best for his family, friends, and constituents during this difficult time." You do not have to act like you were buddy-buddy. Acting like you were good friends to an awful person just makes it clear that you don't have good taste in friends.

EDIT TO ADD: You can even say "I was grateful for his help with [bipartisan initiative]. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends." That is both kind and accurate and NOT sugarcoating it.
