It's been a hot second since I last wrote anything MDZS/CQL related, mainly because I have had other hyperfixations, and I do not control the hyperfixation.
But this is special 💖

The sound of a xiao can be heard from a distance within the borders of the Gusu Lan area. Those who know, they sigh softly, those who don't just rolls their eyes, and the one who knows the most sits still within the walls of his seclusion.
Lan Xichen has not really done any progress since he's entered seclusion. His very soul seems to be petrified in grief, and many other emotions he's not able to define.
Is he angry?
Is he sad?
Is he regretful?
He doesn't know anymore. Perhaps that is how Wangji felt when Wei Wuxian died, he thinks, perhaps now he understands a little better the lengths his brother wnt and is still going for his beloved.
But Lan Xichen does not have a beloved anymore.
Perhaps he doesn't deserve to have one, considering that he himself stabbed him and condemned him.
And Nie Huaisang's face, and his 'I don't know' still burn in his mind, making him doubt his own actions.
And now he can't even bring himself to pronounce his name.
So he plays, he plays as Wangji had played the guqin so many times, perhaps hoping to find answers, or closure. Or, if all else fails, at least a sliver of comfort in the solitude he had closed himself into.
Such is the destiny of a Lan, to love fiercely, and be destroyed by that same love.
So he plays 'Inquiry', his questions endless, was he wrong in doubting him, was he fooled by him all the time, were all the countless little moments they had spent just an act?
He doesn't know anymore.
And it is in the moment that he is about to finish playing, that he hears someone responding to Inquiry.
No, not someone, it is him. His spirit lingers there, in the space between Lan Xichen and the window, his dimpled face showing that smile, the one he always had reserved for him.
"Sect Leader Jin." Lan Xichen calls him, fearing that if he calls him any other name he might crumble to dust.
The ghost does not reply. Lan Xichen tries again.
"Jin Guangyao." And he hopes that the trembling of his voice is not showing, as he feels tears prick the corner of his eyes. The ghost does not reply, once again.
"Meng Yao." His appearance was needed for him to pronounce his name once again. The ghost stays still.
"A-Yao." And he sees the ghost move, finally, sitting quietly in front of him. A-Yao reaches out to cup Lan Xichen's cheek with a ghostly hand, and his voice, a little distorted, as if coming from far away, reaches Lan Xichen's ears. "Er-ge. Let us talk."
And the soft sound of the xiao slowly fades, leaving only the sound of Lan Xichen, quietly sobbing in front of the ghost of his beloved, his own heart, frozen in time, finally starting to beat again.
