Out of necessity for its time, Cat People hides its queer character behind coding. The lead Irena is under the belief she can’t have sex with her new husband as she will turn into a cat and kill him. Her inability to take part in “normal heterosexual activity” is what drives the plot of the film and ultimately makes her the “other”. The references to her as “odd” as well as her interaction with another woman from her “tribe” were strong indicators in the 40′s to her being a lesbian.
