they sit in silence for a few moments . harry follows her gaze to the pictures on the wall : bill & fleur , their engagement photo , their wedding photo . a future that people their age still dream of . a future that they themselves had once dreamed of , maybe , but it’s an image that grows fainter by the day .
harry’s eyes then fall to her sweater – a familiar one , one she’s worn almost this entire time . he knows it’s not hers . harry doesn’t need to ask whose it is because he had done the same thing when ron had left , when he’d thought he’d never see him again . he’d used one of ron’s flannels as though it were the invisibility cloak , hoping it’d somehow hide him away from the world ; but it could never save him from the locket’s voice in his head , sneering that ron had been right , that ron would choose his family over harry because harry could never be family to ron —
enough .
harry feels himself unclench his fist . he hadn’t even noticed he’d tightened it in the first place .
for the tenth time since staying there , a momentary panic seizes him . the locket ! where is it ? it’s shoved in hermione’s bag for now , but he still finds himself grazing hermione’s collar , searching for the gold chain .
hang on . weren’t there usually two chains ? the horcrux , yes . & the other —
❝ hermione . ❞ her name bubbles out of him . suddenly , he realizes the weight of hermione’s locket in his jeans pocket , its hard edge pressing into his thigh . things had happened so quickly at the manor that harry had nearly forgotten what he’d grabbed off the floor before disapparating .
❝ i — sorry , ❞ he says again as he unfurls it from his pocket . the locket is simple , its gold chain glinting in the light of dawn . ❝ this is yours , isn’t it ? i saw it on the floor by bellatrix so i just thought … ❞
One...the locket George had gifted her when she was in sixth year. It had came after a letter she had wrote him about gifting her one of his inventions that she loved so much. Hermione had expected something like a new firework or a piece of candy with magical properties or even something from the WonderWitch line. But no, it had been a locket. They didn’t even sell it in the store, even though Hermione knew it was an invention that would sell well.
No, the locket was one of a kind and it was hers and Bellatrix had ripped it off of her locket during one of the reprieves she had took between letters. The witch had just finished craving ‘L’ into Hermione’s arm with the light that had reflected off of her locket had drawn her attention away.
Back in Malfoy Manor, she hasn’t been able to think about it fully. All she thought about was escape...getting out of the manor..living to see another day. Or, at minimum, hoping that Harry and Ron could escape even if it meant leaving her.
At Shell Cottage, that was when she allowed herself to mourn over the loss.
Hermione stared at Harry’s hand for a moment, almost as if time froze around them because there it was, the familiar gold almost a different shade then the horcrux’s own chain. It was a brighter yellow, newer and well loved. Hermione was sure that George had laced it with an anti-rust charm but she wouldn’t have cared either way. It could have been fool’s gold and she still would have worn it around her neck.
Shakily, Hermione reached out to take it from Harry, letting out a breath that she hadn’t even realized she was holding. It was as if all the tension she was holding was now gone. She could finally count down to one.
“...Thank you.” She whispered softly, not knowing what else to say in the moment, even if she knew that the words ‘thank you’ didn’t suffice. “I thought...I lost it and I was going to have to tell him that-” No...Hermione cut of her train of thought there, not wanting to jinx it. Not wanting to say she would see George again when...there was a possibility she wouldn’t. The hunt wasn’t over. “Thank you, Harry. Really.”
