the olive theory (Paul Reiser, Couplehood) emphasizes the mechanics of a balanced partnership. one person in the relationship loves olives, the other hates them. if something comes with olives, the oliver-lover eats them—nothing goes to waste.

(he wasn't just talking about food)—yes! he’s saying compatibility has more to do with complementary differences than identical traits/habits/beliefs.

in relation, we’re solving a puzzle. can one person’s aversion be easily traded for the other’s preference?

when our differences complement/accommodate the other, it builds love/prevents resentment.

instead of shaming (tacky), it’s a lot easier to say “we will never fight over who eats grape jollyranchers.”
