(Circus Kids week day seven - Love.)

Yasha had started to wonder if love was only meant to bring her pain.

Right now, she was mostly just numb. Tired enough to blunt all sensations, to keep the worst of things at bay, but she could still feel the memories lurking like broken glass, ready to tear her open if she came too close. Yasha pulled her ragged blanket closer, the one concession she’d made to the cold, even as part of whispered she didn’t deserve it. She was a coward, after all. She hadn’t been there when it mattered. For either of them.

Snow started to fall in earnest, and she curled up further on herself, numbness and despair settling over her shoulders as her mind skirted too close to that broken glass. Of a bright coat stark against the snow. Hanging on a staff, fluttering in the wind. Empty.

The color and brightness that she’d slowly let into her life, that, yes, she’d let herself love, after so long of thinking she wasn’t able to again, just… gone. The tears started to make their way down her face and she started to shake. Coward. Coward.

Maybe love only brought her pain, because that was all she deserved.

“Love.”

It still didn’t feel real.

Yasha drifted awake in the middle of the night in the Blooming Grove, grass soft beneath her and Beau warm at her side. Beau snuffled a little as Yasha pulled her closer, breathing her in. The first wonderful, impossible thing, that still sometimes felt too good to be true. The second, and somehow even more impossible, rested just a few feet away. Sleeping quietly, curled up on himself. Face peaceful.

Alive.

A commission I did for @midnighter13 I’m so glad I had a chance to paint this piece for her! The circus kids and their friendship mean a lot to me and this AU has a special place in my heart. If you haven’t read it - I encourage you to do it! This is the scene from the last written part of the AU, but give it a read from the beginning if you have time - it’s so worth it ❤

(Circus Kids week day six - a day out.)

“It’s going to be amazing,” Molly gushed as he and Yasha turned the last street corner on the walk from the bus stop, her smiling while he continued to gesture wildly. “It’s not the fanciest place and okay it’s not authentic, but the flavors are really really good! And you get a TON of food!”

“What’s your favorite?” Yasha asked.

“The sweet and spicy beef ramen! But there’s plenty of other stuff, I’m sure we’ll find something that you like… too…”

He trailed off when the restaurant finally came into view. There it was, right where it should be… and a gigantic CLOSED sign was placed over the front door.

Wait what???

Molly frantically dug out his phone. 11:47 AM. It’d been a couple weeks since he’d been here, being too busy with other stuff, but it should have been open right now. Since when was a place like this just straight up closed during lunch rush? He snapped a quick picture, firing off a message to Jester.

Molly: jesterrrrr it’s closed :’C y closed?! [image]

Jester: Oh no, you didn’t see the news? D:

He started to get a terrible sinking feeling.

Molly: what news???

(Circus Kids week day five - soulmates.)

It took a few times of it happening for them to realize what was going on.

The first had been on a day of Molly trying out high rise tricks in the tent before a show. Yasha had felt a swoop of fear in her stomach and before she even knew what was going on she’d been moving, running and catching Molly from a fall. There’d been a couple terrified heartbeats, thinking about of how badly that could have gone, before the two of them had dissolved into nervous laughter and Molly cracking a joke that Yasha should be with him for every practice. It was only later on, when others who’d been there started talking to each other, that they realized Yasha had started to move at the exact moment that Molly had slipped - and that she hadn’t even been looking at him when she did.

This incident was one of the more noticeable ones, but the others were still strange. Molly started to get a knack for knowing when Yasha was going to be back, and would always be on the correct side of camp when she came in. More than once Yasha was able to shake Molly awake from a nightmare before it’d even gotten bad. The tipping point, however, and what made them realize that they should probably figure this out, was when Molly had stopped dead while washing dishes one day, suddenly bolting away with the others shouting after him. Very quickly they’d had other things to worry about as Yasha was driven back into camp while fighting some bandits, Molly now right beside her, but afterwards everyone had realized Molly had gone to Yasha before the general alarm had even been raised.

Orna was the one who ended up explaining it to them, sitting them both down in her tent with basic drinks.

“I think the two of you have a soul bond.”

For Day 7 of Circus Kids Week - Reunion (& Love)

So I stayed up later than I needed to after work, even though I have work AGAIN in eight hours (now… 6 hours) to finish this, anticipating being dead on my feet when I get home and not wanting to write… and also I had a very clear idea that I needed to get down before I forgot (like I forgot most of it already- don’t write things in your head at work kids). 

BUT HERE WE ARE. CIRCUS KIDS WEEK FINAL DAY.

This has been so much fun. Thank you so much to @circuskidsweek for running it!! And massive appreciation to everyone else who participated. I have so many fics to catch up on and read.

CIRCUS KIDS WEEK DAY SEVEN- REUNION | LOVE

In the end, their roles are reversed.

Here is Yasha, better spoken at least in comparison. Not alone anymore, unchained, her wings unbroken.

Here is Mollymauk, barely verbal. His chains are still there, pulling taut as he yanks and he still seems to remember having wings that were made for breaking. He still remembers the horrors of not being alone and being alone entwined together until it’s hard for him to know which he wants.

She is still grayscale in a colorful world, but he seems to need the gray, like too much color hurts his eyes. Like everything is still too hard and bright and violent.

She is there for him as he was there for her, a safe haven in a world that feels like it can only cause pain.
