(Flashback) switch || Jieun & Baekhyun
Baekhyun nodded and followed after her. It would be a lie if he said he didn’t miss her and it would be an equal lie to also say that his mind didn’t remember the affection he once held for her. The difference was that the time has now changed, and everything from the past was to stay in the past. They’ve both moved on however part of him hoped they could become close friends like they once were. At least, they seem to be getting along fine right now.
They arrived at a small hideaway behind the main performance tent. A silent yet rather comfortable of an area. Sitting down on the ground beside her, he listens to her story. Not wanting to interrupt her tale, he nodded along quietly. Baekhyun’s face contorted in shock at the thought of the hospital which he used to volunteer at catching on fire.
For her family to think her dead, he wasn’t as sure how he felt about that. He knew about how her family worked and how much she didn’t feel too much for them, however, part of him wondered if this was okay. Although he had nothing to say about it since he too, pretended to die so that he could part from his family.
"Well first off I’m definitely glad you’re okay," Baekhyun began saying when she finished. He gave a small smile and ruffled her hair, like he used to do in the past. Then he paused a bit before firing out his questions.
"So I’m guessing the hospital was pretty damaged? Do you know how your parents took the information? Although…I suppose after three years you wouldn’t remember that much detail. I know I wouldn’t," Baekhyun chuckled a bit, calming himself down from the excitement which he had retained.
Jieun looked expectantly at Baekhyun and softly bit her lip when she saw his surprised expression. They weren't happy news, after all, so she kind of expected that reaction. She imagined the hospital meant something for him and held a lot of memories, as it did for her: it was the place where she had lived during almost seven years and she had considered it her home during all that time.
She pouted softly when he ruffled her hair; although she didn't really like her hair being messed up, she had kind of missed it and it was a nice display of affection. She softly passed her hands through it, trying to fix it a little, and smiled at the boy happily. She was happy to have found him again, to be honest.
Jieun chuckled softly when she was bombarded with questions. "I guess it was. I run away from the fire and got lost, so I never got to see it again." She replied, shrugging slightly. "And I don't know about my family. I hadn't talked to them in months when the fire happened, and I haven't talked to them ever since." She said, trying to sound as neutral as possible. Although she had never had a good relationship with her family, that wasn't to say she didn't miss them. However, she thought they were probably better off without her; although money was never an issue for her family, she had always felt like a burden to them, her stay at the private hospital and expensive treatments for her fragile health making her feel like she owed them something.
She shook her head out of those thoughts and looked up at the boy with a soft smile. "How about you? What did you do all these years?" She asked, curiosity taking the best out of her.
(Flashback) switch || Jieun & Baekhyun
"Three years?" Baekhyun’s eyes widened a bit, meaning if he had calculated correctly she had left the hospital not that long after his departure. If he thought about it, she did seem rather healthy during the time he accompanied her; she never got sick at least but the nurses and doctors whom he asked always stated it was a ‘necessary precaution’.
"Well I think you can tell but I just recently joined," Baekhyun said with a slight chuckle. Three years…three years was a long time. She must love this place, though he wondered how her family would let her come here. If memories served him correctly, she had stated that they were always busy and if her long stay was anything to go by, he would be correct to assume her to be from a rich family. They just never talked much about it, the whole family was something that darkened the mood in a hospital naturally.
No matter what, her family didn’t seem like they would easily let her join the circus. the more he thought about it. However he felt it too rude to bluntly ask. Instead he opted for a more nicely worded question. “What brought you to this place? Besides well…merging with people who also have an ability.” He gave a small smile as he looked at her.
Jieun nodded and chuckled lightly. Three years were a bit over the amount of time that had passed since they had last seen each other; she was kind of expecting that reaction from Baekhyun actually. "Yeah, I think I would have noticed you before." She replied with a soft chuckle. Now that she though about it, she had kind of missed Baekhyun these last years. He had probably person that was constant in her life during her stay at the hospital, apart from the doctors and nurses, and it had been nice to have someone to talk to during all that time. She sincerely hoped they could get back to being good friends soon.
"Well, it's kind of a long story?" She said as she slowly tilted her head. "Let's seat there and I'll tell you" She added a few minutes later, signaling for them both to go to a more secluded place: it was one of Jieun's favourite spots in the circus, a small hideaway behind the main performance tent, not too busy and noisy during the day.
Once they were sitting in the ground, Jieun smiled softly and started telling him her story. "So, the hospital caught on fire a few months after you were gone, and I luckily survived." She started, directing a small glance at Baekhyun before looking back down at her fiddling hands on her lap. "After that, my family though I had died in the fire. Then one of the circus members found me and I have stayed here ever since." She finished rapidly. It wasn't really such a long story, after all, but it was kind of shocking, she guessed. She looked back up at the boy, trying to see his reaction to the story.
(Flashback) switch || Jieun & Baekhyun
"Then let’s go there later," Baekhyun said with a small chuckle. They had a lot of catching up to do with all the years that had gone by after he had told her and only her of his plans to disappear. For her to be out of the hospital and in the circus, something must have happened during their time gap.
He gave a light hum of agreement, not particularly bothered by the fact that they hid it from each other. It wasn’t like he ever promised her no secrets between them -since he’d be breaking the promise right off the bat- and the only place truly safe for abilities to be revealed was in the circus. Baekhyun tilted his had slightly at her, wondering what could possibly be her ability. What if it was related to her stay at the hospital? Just like how Jongdae had told Baekhyun that he had to stay at the hospital due to his ability.
"No no it’s fine, if I get tired I’ll just my ability. You should get some rest they’re kind of heavy anyways," Baekhyun said with a light chuckle, sliding the bags away from her grasp in a firm refusal. He began walking, nudging his head to indicate for her to follow.
"How have you been all these years?" Baekhyun said as a smile played out on his lips. Indeed, they both had their awkward teenage phase however now that both of them were out of it, she certainly grew prettier.
Jieun smiled and nodded at Baekhyun, not too talkative as always. She thought about everything they had to catch up with: many things had happened in three years. Jieun hadn't done much but leave the hospital and arrive at the circus, although probably pretending she was dead was something kind of important. She wondered if Baekhyun still had some kind of relationship with someone from their past, or if he had ever been informed that Jieun was supposedly dead.
Jieun's eyebrows rised at the mention of his ability. Was it that he was stronger than normal people? Jieun couldn't help but frown at this thought, Baekhyun didn't really fit that ability. Maybe telekinesis? That would definitely suit him more. She followed him absentmindedly, lost in her own thoughts and divagations. She was shaken out of them though when he spoke again.
"Oh, good, I guess." She said, not really knowing how to answer. She didn't want to get into bigger explanations until they were properly settled. "Been here for three years already." She added a few moments later, a soft chuckle accompanying her words. Three years, that was a long time to stay at the same place. But she really liked the circus, and didn't plan on leaving soon.
My Comfort {Jaejoong and IU}
"Will you find my family and give them this message?"
"Help me!"
"Find the police and tell them where my body is!"
"Give my son his inheritance!"
It was too much for Jaejoong to take. Too many spirits with too many requests. It scared the young man insanely. He found that he was losing himself. There was too many distractions. He clutched at his head. Jaejoong wanted them all to go away. He hated it. He hated everything. Rushing out from his tent, he covered his face, so that he couldn’t see the spirits but yet, he could hear them still. It was too much.
He ran until he couldn’t hear them anymore, and slid down a tree, clutching his head still. Tears poured from his eyes. His ability ruined his chance at a normal life. If he didn’t have this ability, where would he be? He would be at home, living with his mother, going to school, getting a law degree…and just now he’d be starting work. Instead though, he was here, in Shanghai with nothing.
His body shook as he cried softly. It was too hard to live like this. He didn’t even hear footsteps coming towards him. He just kept his head down, body shaking as he cried. Months of living in this misery had taken their toll on him, as the young man broke down in tears.
Jieun straightened her legs and let them fall down again, her feet dangling from the picnic table she was sitting on. Night was starting to come, and the circus was starting to wake slowly. Jieun, as always, had been one of the first to wake up and she was now waiting for something to do. She hoped she could help some performer with their act today: she was feeling quite energetic today and it had been long since she had worked as assistant in a performance.
As she sat there, looking around absentmindedly, she noticed a boy rushing through the grounds, his hands covering his face. Frowning slightly, Jieun stood up from the table and started following the boy. She walked slowly, not wanting to tire herself too much and be rendered unable to help later. She identified the sound of the boys' footsteps and followed them through the circus. As she approached him, the frown on her forehead deepened: was the boy crying? She could hear little sobs coming from the place where the boy was.
Once she got there, she noticed that he was indeed crying. A sudden feeling of concern invaded Jieun, and she rushed to the boy's side. "Hey." She said in a soft voice, not wanting to scare him, as she kneeled down next to the boy. "Are you okay there?" She added then, a soft smile drawn on her face, trying to comfort and give a feeling of security to the boy by her side.
(Flashback) switch || Jieun & Baekhyun
Her constant change in expressions through that few seconds caused him to smile a bit. The shock still seem to resonate for both of them, however he was feeling a lot calmer than earlier. He leaned downwards, a bit closer to her, hands extended for her to grab and help her back up. She shouldn’t be getting herself dirty if anything from the past was to go by.
"Well that’s a long story… I’ll tell you once we go somewhere more comfortable," Baekhyun sheepishly said as he scratched of the back of his head. To her, he had been normal and he had intended to keep his past life as normal as possible. However there was Jongdae, Kai and now Jieun who seemed to appear in front of him and he suddenly realized maybe it wouldn’t be that simple afterall. Although on another note, he would have never thought so many people close to him were just like him.
"But if you’re here…I guess we both kept a secret from each other," Baekhyun said with a small chuckle. He looks down at the bags she had dropped and picked them up. With a tilt of his head he asked, "where to?"
Jieun nodded at his words. It probably was more than long, seeing as how three years had passed since they had last seen each other. When he offered her help, Jieun smiled and stood up with his help, now looking properly at Baekhyun. He had grown taller, and his features had definitely changed: he wasn't a chubby teenager anymore, but a quite handsome young man. "I know a quiet and comfortable place we can go." She said, a soft smile adorning her features.
Jieun was about to start moving when he spoke again, and a sheepish smile appeared on her face. "Yeah, I guess so." She said, chuckling with him. "But now we don't have to keep secrets anymore." She added a moment later, grinning widely. Now that he mentioned it, Jieun started to wonder what would be Baekhyun's ability. Despite herself having an ability, she couldn't guess what Baekhyun could do, and when she tried to remember if something about Baekhyun had been strange when they were together, nothing came to mind.
She was shaken out of her thoughts by his movement and words. "Oh, uhm, the maintenance tent." She said, smiling at him. "Here, let me carry one at least." She added a few moments later, scrambling to take one of the bags from his hold. She was okay with him helping a bit, specially now that she was feeling kind of weak, but she just couldn't bring herself to let him do all the work.
(Flashback) switch || Jieun & Baekhyun
After helping out in the Main Tent after the show ended, Baekhyun had decided to take a small walk before heading back to his tent. Unfortunately, the stars weren’t out tonight so he only had the lonely moon as his company. At least there was a nice breeze going which was better than nothing.
A small smile on his face, he hums a small tune for a short while to rid himself of any kind of thoughts. It’s then when he sees a girl crouching down on the ground. She’s facing her back to him and it’s kind of dim however it’s clearly evident that she appears to be in some sort of distress. Worried, he rushed over to her, placing a hand on her shoulder, as he exclaimed. “Are you okay?”
When she turned, his breath briefly hitched, as the face matched a familiar one from his memories and it caused him to pause for a few seconds as the gears in his brain turned rather slowly. Then he gasped however he maintained his grip on her.
"Jieun, is that really you Jieun?" Baekhyun softly stated, the shock clearly evident on his face. He had never thought he would see her here. Last time he rememebered, she was a hospital patient forever stuck in her room until it was time for his volunteering duties. Those memories flooding back as he stood there. "It’s been a while. A long long while."
The sound continued piercing through Jieun's ears, and it rendered her unable to do anything but continue crouched down on the floor. She couldn't even think, her mind absorbed by the beeping. She gazed up moments later, when she felt someone next to her and, even if she couldn't think, the vision struck her and she stared at the boy in front of him with wide eyes.
The sound disappeared a few seconds later, thankfully, and then Jieun's mind was filled with memories of Byun Baekhyun. It had been so long since they had last seen each other, and Jieun had never though she would encounter him here, or that she would encounter him ever again. Last thing she heard of him was he was running away from home once he finished high school, and by that time Jieun was still in the hospital.
She nodded slowly at Baekhyun's words, still too shocked and tired by the experience to properly move. She kneeled down on the ground, not minding if she got her clothes dirty, too weak right now to stand up. "I-I am." She said, voice quiet as always and slightly quivering. She let out a soft chuckle at his next words before she replied. "It definitely has." A few seconds passed before the situation really struck her; Baekhyun, her teenage boyfriend, was at the Midnight Circus. "What are you doing here?" She blurted out before she could stop herself.
Switch || Jieun & Sunny
The circus was quiet and, for once, Sunny seemed to be finished with her work early. A rare treat for the girl as maintenance work was never her favorite job to do. Even after being there for a few months, it seemed also surreal that she was actually at the circus. Her eyes traveled the area in front of her, a feeling of bewilderment and contentment washing over her yet again. They stopped, however, on a small figure in front of her. It was a girl she hadn’t met yet, she assumed, crouched in what seemed like pain.
Hurriedly, Soonkyu walked towards the other girl and placed her hand on the other’s shoulder as gently as she could. “Are you alright?” she asked, when the girl lifted her head. Her eyes darted to the two bags on either side of the girl and wondered what she was doing to make her curl up like she was. “Do you need anything?” she asked, quieter this time.
The high-pitched sound continued piercing through Jieun's ears, and she couldn't hear anything else. She looked up at the girl now standing before her; she remembered seeing her around the circus, but they had actually never talked. Jieun couldn't remember what was her ability neither, or what she did in the circus, but she knew the girl was kind of new. She looked at her lips as she spoke, trying to decipher what she was saying.
A soft cry left Jieun's lips when she tried to speak and she crouched even more if possible, the beep getting louder until it suddenly stopped. Taking a deep breath and releasing it after, Jieun looked back up at the girl in front of her. "I'm okay, I think." She said, voice barely over a whisper. She could feel her head pounding loudly and she knew she probably would have a headache for the rest of the night and maybe even the next day. She stayed kneeling on the ground, trying to regain her even breathing, altered by the experience, and directed a soft smile towards the other girl. "Thank you."
switch || Jieun & ??
Jieun walked away from the big tent, two big bags full of costumes in her hands. As a member of the cleaning team, it was her task this week to keep everything clean so, after the performances, she had to make sure not a single thing was out of place. As the lightweight she was, she had been put in charge of all the costumes, thinking that probably wouldn't make her do much physical efforts. However, Jieun regretted how wrong they all had been: the bags weighed way too much for her but, as proud and stubborn as she was, she had said nothing and continued with her task.
As she continued walking, she stopped every few meters to leave the bags in the floor for a few seconds and catch her breath. Thankfully though, the spectators and most of the performers had already left, so the circus was quite quiet. Taking a deep breath and releasing it soundly, Jieun picked the bags once again and continued with her route. She didn't get far, though, before she heard a high sound pierce through her ears, making her drop the bags and cover her ears. It didn't help much, but it was something instinctive. She crouched down on the ground, her head pulsing with the sound vibrations. She waited to see if the sound disappeared, but to no avail, and the constant beep didn't let her hear anything else. It wasn't until she felt a hand on her shoulder that she noticed there was someone next to her, a concerned expression on the person's face.
