With the power switch on, the normal indications are:

• SYS LED on, green, and continuous

• Fan operating

  But when there are troubleshoot, do you know how to fix them, here we will show you the fault indications:

  This is a condensed listing of LED states. For the complete listing see “LED Indicators” (Cisco

Check the following symptoms to locate or eliminate faults in the power and cooling systems:

  • With the power switch on, is the SYS LED on green?

– If the LED is green and continuous, the router has booted and the software is functional.

– If the LED is blinking green the system is booting or in ROM monitor mode.

– If the LED is off the system board is faulty.

– If the LED is amber, check for a system error.

  • With the power switch on and the SYS LED on and green, does the fan operate?

– If no, check the fan.

– If yes, the power system is functioning.

  • With the power switch on and the SYS LED off, does the fan operate?

– If yes, the router is receiving power. The fan is connected directly to the DC outputs of the power supply.

– If no, check the power source and power cable.

  • Does the router shut down after being on a short time?

– Check for an environmentally induced shutdown.

– Check the environmental site requirements in “General Site Requirements” (Cisco 3900/2900, Cisco 1900).

  • Router partially boots

Difference between an IP base image and an IP services image

What is the difference between an IP base image and an IP services image?

  The IP base is for the Standard Multilayer Software Image (SMI) switches, and the IP services image is for the Enhanced Standard Multilayer Software Image (EMI) switches in Cisco IOS  Software Release 12.2(25)SEB and later.

  For the Catalyst 3750 and 3560 switches, Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(25)SEA and earlier referred to the image that provides Layer 2+ (L2) features and basic Layer 3 routing as the Standard Multilayer Image (SMI). The image that provides full Layer 3 routing and advanced services was referred to as the EMI.

  The inter VLAN routing feature is supported on both IP base or SMI and IP services or EMI image Layer 3 switches. For Layer 2-only switches, you require a Layer 3 routing device with any of the previous images.

  The IP Base feature set includes advanced quality of service (QoS), rate limiting, access control lists (ACLs), and basic static and Routing Information Protocol (RIP) functions. Dynamic IP routing protocols (Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), BGPv4, Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)) are available only on the IP services image.

  The IP Services image provides a richer set of enterprise-class features, which includes advanced hardware-based IP unicast and IP Multicast routing. Support for IPv6 Layer 3 switching WS-C3750X-48P-S in hardware is also available with the addition of the Advanced IP Services license to either the IP Base or the IP Services images. iiNet FTTH smart wiring routing issue, how to solved

We are having a great amount of trouble getting our fibre to the home properly setup and was wondering if anyone could recommend any next steps. Here’s the story so far. We use the router Cisco 2901 most time.

We reside in a new estate where all the homes have been ‘smart wired’. All the wiring sits in a locked box at the front of our house and is apparently property of Vic Urban (now known as places victoria I believe). Initially while they were testing the connections in our estate it had a modem in it, and routed internet to all the Ethernet ports in our house. Everything worked swimmingly, until we were told we needed to sign up with either iprimus or iinet.

After choosing iinet a technician from Vic Urban unlocked the box at the front of our house and replaced the modem with what I believe is some sort for fibre switch. It sends the internet through to all the Ethernet ports but only one can use the internet at any one time, as it does not assign IP addresses. We have plugged in our BoB Lite and have wireless, but 3 our of our 4 ethernet ports in our house do not have internet and cannot be plugged into our network as it can stop internet going through to the BoB.

We want to be able to use these Ethernet ports as we have media players as well as other home PCs. We have talked to both Vic Urban and iinet and have been advised that we are unable to have a router in the locked box at the front of the house due to something about the telecommunications act, and that they don’t have authority to put in ‘personalised equipment’.

Has anyone encountered anything like this, or know of any possible solutions?

  The solution:

1 You need to configure those ethernet ports to be plugged into the BoB modem.

You will need to get a cable contractor in to reconfigure / rewire your ethernet distribution system so that the line from that box terminates where you want to place BoB and all three outlets each run back to that same location as separate runs.

  You will then be able to install BoB and it will allocate a unique IP for each outlet/device. Otherwise you can only have one computer plugged in anywhere.

  The other option is to only connect BoB to one of the outlets and use the wireless on Bob to connect to all the devices – not as good but probably a lot cheaper for you.

  2 The firm that built the house haven't done the job correctly. There should be an area adjacent to that box with a "patch panel" so that the services from the box all terminate externally (phone, television, internet connections etc) and also all the leads from the various outlets in the house terminate – a panel that the end user can alter at will. You could then terminate your router on the incoming line and terminate each router port on a line to one of the rooms.

  That of course would cost extra money to install and possibly the Vic Urban service was hoping to get an additional fee for a "multiport termination" built into the box (their supplied and rented router much the same as Foxtel charge $20 per additional room for PayTV).... And maybe the Cisco 1921 is your best choose. Also as you could only install a wireless router at the patch panel location (often in a garage) the actual wireless coverage could be pretty bad from that location.

  I'm sure there is an angle there somewhere – there always is with these smart wired houses (generally you are even locked to Telstra!) Personally I'd avoid them like the plague.

Question 1: Want to load IOS for the Cisco Catalyst 2960, Solaris TFTP server is being used.

I receive the "error opening // tftp /x.x.x.x/ switch-confg (socket error)" when I try to connect to the TFTP server.

I've checked all of these things.

I am still receiving the message. I have two independent PSc being used with XP Pro.

Both have Solaris running on them.

There are only two computers on my lab setup.

IP addresses 10.1.1.1 and 10.1.1.2 with no subnetting involved.

I have checked the folder permisions to allow the Everyone group access to the share, the default storage area setup by solaris initally.

  I can map to the folder without any issues.

I am logged in as the Administrator on both machines.

  Then I'm stuck. I have been trying the "copy running-config tftp" command within the Hyper-terminal. What should I do?

  Answer 1: Make sure that the tftp server is actually running, that the device is listed as trusted and that the connection is not being blocked by a firewall inline or on the tftp server host.

You can try to turn on the TFTP server from the working switch as below:

conf t tftp-server flash:c2950-xxxxxx-xxx-xxx.bin

  Question 2: My current setup is the Switch is connected to the PC1 via the console port.

I have PC2 and PC1 running Solaris accepting and receiving.

PC1 has IP address 10.1.1.1 and PC2 has 10.1.1.2.

I have tried pinging both PCs  both ways PC1 to PC2 and vice versa.

When I go to the hyper-terminal (PC1) I have successful communications with Switch 1.

Switch 1 is the switch that has the running and startup-config that I wish to copy to the TFTP server (PC2).

  Answer 2: You can't tftp across a console port use the switch WS-C2960S-24TS-L.  If you want to use the console port to upload you will need to use Xmodem.  To use tftp, connect the switch and host PC together via one of the cat5 ports, assign an IP to the appropriate VLAN interface on the switch and an IP in the same subnet to the PC's NIC and it should work just fine.

You need to assign the device an IP and put it in the network. then make sure you can ping the device over the network. once thats it place, tftp the file over the network.

Question about the Connection Refused on Cisco 2960S SSH

I can ping this switch WS-C2960S-24TD-L but I keep getting "Connection refused by remote host" when I try to connect to it via SSH.  The vty 0 4 config is identical to another switch that pings and accepts SSH.  Both switches are configured "no aaa new-model".  Is there a debug that might give me a clue as to what I could be missing?  Something that would debug the ssh session connection attempt?

Cisco fiber switch recommendation

Question: I have a network with all fiber switches, the main switch is cisco 4500, Im planning to open a new branch  that will be connected with fiber, I will have 6 communications rooms in  the new branch. can someone recommend what type of cisco switches POE 24, 48 ports to use, also I plan to keep a cisco fiber switch in the new branch that will connect to all the 6 communications rooms. what is the best cisco model to use.

  Answer: 3750X, have up to 4 SFP ports

You can stack 2 together to act as 1 switch and that will give you 8 SFP ports to use for fibre connections. The SFP modules are sold separately though, However, if you want to have a separate SFP-only switch, look at the 4500X.

  Catalyst Switch 2960G may be your best bet except that is is layer 2. If you don't plan doing any routing on the switch, then that should suffice.

You can call Cisco direct and have a rep recommend something to you from their fleet. The recommendation costs you nothing, It'll be a good guide as they will give you the pros and cons including the bells and whistles, but you'll get the general idea you need in more detail.

  One note about the 2960... the X version is usually cheaper than the S or G versions as Cisco are trying to forcefully migrate people away from older models.  This is a bonus for you though, as the X variant is substantially better than previous models.

  You could use a the model WS-C3750G-12S-S as a distribution switch and the model WS-C2960S-48FPD-L the 48-port access layer switches,  or the 2960S-48PS-L if you don't want 10G and need to save a few.

Cisco 2960 Trunk vs Access Port, How to Sloved?

Kind of a silly question.  I plugged my laptop into a port of a Cisco 2960 WS-C2960S-48LPD-L .  Port was configured like this..

Switchport mode access

Switchport access vlan 2

  I was able to ping devices across my network.  I then configured the port as a trunk...

switchport mode trunk

switchport trunk allowed vlan 2

I could no longer ping anything in the network after the change.

Laptop has a static IP address. 

What am I missing?

  The solution:

When you make a port a trunk, it "tags" traffic. This means that all vlans, with the exception of one vlan (vlan 1 by default), will only be accepted and transmitted when properly tagged. If your nic driver allows you to set a vlan tag, then you would have been able to communicate if you set the vlan tag to 2. Also, if you entered the command "switchport trunk native vlan 2" along with the other commands you entered this would also allow you to pass traffic with the laptop.

Solved the problem: Unable to Connect to Cisco WS-C2960-48PST-L

  Question:

We have configured a WS-C2960-48PST-L (Lan Based) switch up with IP address/default gateway (VLan 9) etc and it appears in our network and any device we connect to it has network access but we cannot communicate with it.

We use Cisco 2960s IP Based switches in our network here. With these switches we can manage them via Cisco Network Assistant and Telnet which the LAN based switch does not seem to give. Do you know of any way around this? Is it a configuration issue? Any help you could give would be most appreciated. I have attached a copy of the switch config.

  The answer:

Make sure the L2 vlan  for vlan 9 is in the vlan database., "show vlan "  Check the default gateway on the switch and verify it matches the interface on the router.

Cisco 2960: SAN and Setup's

Firstly I'd like to start by saying I am no storage expert when it comes to SAN's.

What I am trying to achieve is some sort of redundant storage network and was wondering how this is done. We currently have HyperV running on most of our servers with local storage used and I want to move to some sort of clustered storage method. I am aware that we need a back end storage and then connect over iSCSI or fiber channel. I believe fiber channel with require HBA cards so that would add too much to the cost / budget.

  I have been looking at the new HP G3 MSA P2000 series and connecting via iSCSI to it.

What exactly is required? Do I need SAN switches? Are these different from our standard switches? What do I need to buy? Is the MSA P2000 even capable of running 10 virtual machines on it as back end storage?

One of the virtual machines will be SQL and MS Dynamics AX Server.

  The solution:

1 Any switch you want to use should support jumbo frames. We are using an Equalogic SAN connected to a stack of Dell Powerconnect Switches. in my config, each hyper v server has 6 nics, 2 for san, 2 for management, and 2 for virtual machines.  The Dell switches also use LLDP to identify the SAN and define quality rules on the switch automatically.

I did testing on a Cisco SG-300 series switch, but i did not test its stacking capability.

  2 You would need a SAN switch if you choose to use fibre channel, i however do not have experience with FC.

For iSCSI,  a gigabit switch that supports jumbo frames will be fine. I connect the SAN and each HyperV host to multiple switches in the stack for redundancy.

For my Hyper V implementation, I have a 2 iscsi targets connected to each HyperV host. 1 is the CSV, the other is the cluster witness.  Each VM gets configured to use a VHD on the CSV as their OS disk, and in my case, the data disk is also on the CSV, but you could create individual iSCSI targets on the SAN for the data disks.
