Problem Solving: Courage Vs Wisdom - How would you get the Book of Mudora?
Doctor Who “The Christmas Invasion” (2005)
favorite bits of the cast interviews in the LOTR special features:
Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen all taking the piss out of Orlando Bloom for going on about a cracked rib too much, while Orlando Bloom desperately tries to wriggle out of talking about it (special mention to Elijah Wood’s “oh it hurts, babes, and I can’t ride the horse, babes” and Viggo Mortensen’s “they can be very fragile, elves, especially the…Mirkwood strain…”)
Ian McKellen commenting that “they never did find any suitable underwear for Gandalf…”
Dominic Monaghan going on and on about how Viggo Mortensen apparently had a crush on one of the Rohirrim extras (who like a lot of the Rohirrim extras was a woman in a fake beard) while Vigoo Mortensen just mutters “one could perhaps say something about Mr. Monaghan’s…proclivities…”
Dominic Monaghan’s imitation of John Rhys-Davies ordering food at a restaurant for the whole cast. “You have partridge? BRING THE PARTRIDGE!”
John Rhys-Davies talking about an incident with the Lothlorian boats and saying “if an elf and a dwarf are in a boat…and…the boat goes under…let us say that the blame was not placed on the elf” while Orlando Bloom splutters “he’s a big guy, man!”
Elijah Wood talking about how the hobbit actors shared a trailer with Ian McKellen and sometimes they would hear inarticulate bellows of protest from his side when they played loud music in the mornings
Viggo Mortensen talking about how, while filming with those same boats, Kirin Shaw (Elijah Wood’s scale double) started telling him “if the boat tips over…save yourself…I can’t swim.”
Elijah Wood describing how Sean Astin would try to direct the helicopters to land while they were on location, while the other three hobbits were screwing around and throwing pinecones at each other
Christopher Lee recounting how he had so much trouble going up some steps in Orthanc with his long robe that he stopped in the middle of the scene and said, “I cannot get up these goddamn steps, Peter.”
Viggo Mortensen mentioning that he left a weekend rehearsal and went walking down the street still swinging his sword around, and promptly got the cops called on him
#i literally hold every film up to the standard of lotr#including the quality of extras#and literally no other film will ever compare#fucking legends
the lotr cast interviews are literally the real life version of that trope where you cut between characters telling wildly divergent accounts of the same event, each of which paints the other as an incompetent buffoon, and it’s hilarious
What a predator really looks like
I have put off writing this post for far too long. I keep seeing this post circulating, even being reblogged by women I consider to be smart and savvy. (Titled “Through a Rapist’s Eyes”) I’m writing a separate post about it because I refuse to reblog it again, even to debunk it. And speaking of debunking it, you can read what snopes has to say about it here. This load of crap has been circulating almost as long as the internet has existed.
But the misinformation in it isn’t the point of this post. Snopes can do that just fine. I want to talk about something that even snopes overlooks in their breakdown: the false assumptions about what a rapist looks like. This false assumption isn’t just dangerous for would-be victims. That would make it seem like a woman can prevent being raped if she just has the right information or wears the right clothes or acts the right way. Yet again the age-old victim blaming. But that’s another post. False assumptions are dangerous because it’s one of the reasons rape gets swept under the rug. It’s the main reason men like Brock Turner get away with it.
You see, most women aren’t raped by a thug in a back alley. Most women are raped by someone they know: a co-worker, a family member, a classmate.
A date.
My sexual assaults fell into these categories. I was sexually harassed and fondled at age 12 by a 16 year old classmate - at school and in view of dozens of witnesses with teachers nearby. (I clarify fondled because some people still think sexual harassment means you can’t take a dirty joke.) I was almost date raped at a party where there wasn’t even any alcohol and then was subsequently harassed by the guy because, again, he was a classmate. I was sexually assaulted by my doctor when I was 17 or 18 (why I can’t remember that detail is - again - another post). This guy had been my doctor since I was seven. In retrospect, I realized he groomed me by making comments about my body since I was a child - sometimes in front of my mother.
Do you see the pattern here? None of these predators were lurking in the dark. None of them were strangers wielding weapons. They certainly didn’t carry around scissors to cut women’s clothing off. And the assaults happened not in dark parking lots or public restrooms but in schools, in the home of a friend, in a doctor’s office. Places where I should have been safe. This is important because assuming rapes happen only in isolated, dark places affects rape trials. If we want juries to stop letting rapists off, we need to educate the public that rape can happen anywhere.
Now let’s talk about profiling. If the police do it with robberies and drug busts, then let’s apply it to sexual assault, shall we? I was watching one of those 20/20 true crime specials (bad idea, I didn’t sleep for a week!) about a serial rapist/murderer. They interviewed multiple people who said he was handsome and charming. One of the FBI agents said he looked like a movie star. One of his victims let him in to her hotel room because he worked there as the maintenance man. He told her there was a leak in the plumbing that he needed to fix. She actually said no at first, but then he said they’d have to change her room if they waited until morning. It was late, she didn’t want to pack up her and her daughter’s things, so she let him in.
Does that mean this woman, her daughter, and her daughter’s friend wouldn’t have been raped and murdered if they’d just been smart enough? No, that is not what I’m saying. Because you know what? I probably would have let him in too. I think most of us would. My point is, it’s time that law enforcement and the public in general woke up to the reality of what predators look like. They look like Brock Turner, Larry Nassar, Jeffrey Epstein. They are typically white (yeah, I said it), often attractive, wealthy, intelligent, and charming. Ted Bundy was, even Charles Manson knew how to charm and manipulate those girls. Maybe men like this wouldn’t leave a long string of ruined lives in their wake if the Brock Turners of this world were put away for a long time when they should be.
The boys who terrorized me when I was a teenager were charming. Girls loved them. I didn’t realize it at the time, but the guy who tried to date rape me, when he was cajoling and making fun of me to let him do things, he basically told me of his former rapes (one with a twelve year old). It was my therapist who helped me see that. At 16, all I knew was that most girls at my school would have wanted to be on that couch with him. The rage he exhibited when I told him no, I thought, was my fault. No one else told him no! Or so he said. How many other victims suffered in silence at my high school? Because who would believe that this charming, good looking guy could be a rapist?
Then there was my doctor. Again, smart, successful, respected in the community. I didn’t find him attractive, but I can see how women would. And even if I did think he was attractive, attraction isn’t consent. Women are raped by men they are in a relationship with, for heaven’s sake! Like Larry Nassar and the US gymnastics team, my mother trusted this man as my doctor my entire childhood. Who would believe me if I accused him? Surely I misunderstood.
All of these assaults happened when I was in my teens, and many years have passed. I don’t even remember the name of the first one. The second, I remember his name, but I have no idea where he is. As for the doctor, I can only remember his last name. I’ve done multiple google searches, and can’t find him. He isn’t practicing medicine anymore, that’s all I know for sure. He may even be dead. I do know none of these men have ever been convicted of assault. Most likely all of their victims, like me, have remained silent.
This is what predators look like.
I have seen the post she’s talking about - please stop reblogging it ya’ll!
i love it when my sheer laziness counts as being radical. “women who don’t shave or wear makeup are so brave!” bro really? thats chill. i just dont wake up until 5 minutes before i leave.
Women just being counts as political statements, and I dream of the day when us just existing is viewed as just existing.

Anti-bullying post
So I don't make a lot of posts and I'm not very good with words. However, after watching people bullying and attacking each other for awhile online I felt the need to talk about something very important to me: bullying. Now, I'm not talking about trolls and those that go out of their way to intentionally attack people, no I'm talking about unintentional bullying. (Although that is definitely a BIG NO-NO). I think most everyone can agree bullying in any form is wrong. However I have seen good people bully and hurt each other online all the time, especially in the fandom world. Most of the time these people are emotionally reacting to what they see and read. A lot of the time people see the emotional reaction post and either defend the original post or the reaction post. People start picking sides and that's when the bullying really begins, and the true intent of the original post gets lost. They stop listening to comprehend what is truly being said and start listening to react and defend. A lot of the time I have noticed that overall everyone for the most part agrees it's just one point that's in disagreement or even just a misunderstanding. However, most of the participants don't even realize that they are even bullying anyone, they just think they are defending their friends and fighting injustice. Sometimes someone will stand up and point out the problem, and most of the time they will be shot down. The people fighting are usually so caught up in their emotions regarding the issue that they stop comprehending what is being said and are just listening to respond. A lot of the time most of the people involved are good people who are just so caught up in emotions that their logic and common sense gets shut off. (That part of the brain literally shuts off) What I think needs to happen when we encounter something that gets us emotional like that is to take a step back. Ask yourself what is the post truly saying, and why is it making you feel the way you do? Next is your response going to be helpful or harmful and what is it you truly want to say? Would it be better to talk individually with the OP about their post in a more private way? (It might help avoid online wars if you do.) I hope that what I have said here is helpful and that we can all try better trying to truly listen and get along. This was a bit thrown together. I just want everyone to not be excluded or afraid to share their thoughts, opinions and growth. PLEASE pause and think before you post. Emotions are important, but so is logic and common sense. Don't be ruled by your emotions ALONE.

Sometimes, you need to choose whose advice on ADHD you want to trust
Hey! Since someone asked what they can do if they encounter a therapist like this:
First, let me say that going to therapy is a great step and I personally benefitted a LOT from it. However, my therapist (basically the one from the comic) told me “I have other patients with ADHD and you’re not like them. You’re too succesfu, you have a job, and you’re too quiet”. I can’t relax in the face of “authority” and hyperfocus, so of course I was quiet.
Not all of us with ADHD are loud and pop out in crowds.
We do have Jobs, we do have degrees and careers, we are smart and can be successful.
Therapy helped me a great deal, however, when you have ADHD, you’ll never really be able to start healing unless you can aknowledge that your brain is differently and if another person can mirror this back to you “yes your brain is a bit different, but that’s A-OK”. The huuuuuuuge chunk of my anxiety came from my untreated and undiagnosed ADHD.
So here’s what you can do and what I basically did:
Find an ADHD self help group. Not only does it feel good to find like-brained people, they can also direct you to their trusted doctors
!!! IT IS TOTALLY OK TO GO TO AN ADHD SELF HELP GROUP EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT DIAGNOSED!!
Search for Neurologists, Doctors or Psychotherapists that are especially trained and specialized in ADHD (having listed ADHD as one of the many things they treat is often not enough. Have a first talk with them if in doubt)
Many hospitals and medical universities have ADHD research divisions, check out if they can diagnose. They should be able to send you a list with Doctors that can Diagnose.
Search up an ADHD organisation in your area. It’s OK to E-Mail / Phone them and ask them for advice.
If you can’t find any ADHD places at all, inform yourself on the diagnose criteria aswell as looking into youtube channels or books. Write a diary on what you think are ADHD symptoms in yourself and bring this to your therapy session. Make yourself be heard and taken seriously by your therapist!!
My favourite sources:
-How to ADHD youtube channel
What it feels like to have ADHD youtube Video (this video made me go seek a diagnosis)
Online ADHD Magazine
The Book “You Mean I’m not Lazy, stupid or Crazy?!
Also: REALLY LOOK INTO WHAT THE QUESTIONS IN THE DSM5 MEAN. I often negate questions just because I misinterprete them.
If you are uncertain about something, make yourself be heard. Don’t be ashamed to ask the same thing 10 times, don’t be ashamed to keep bringing your concern up. You are not stupid for doing so, you are only doing what’s best for you, and so should your doc/therapist/your loved ones.
its really weird to see all these articles about how people who have ADHD have sleeping problems but the issue I have is that if you look at it as a matter of your circadian rythym being out of sync? of COURSE you’re not going to be able to sleep. we don’t say people who can’t fall asleep at 4 pm and sleep 8 hours have insomnia, because that’s not a normally agreed upon time to sleep and its not your bodies time to sleep. if you tell someone to go to bed at 10 and they can’t sleep till 3 am sometimes in just not insomnia. people with ADHD are often wired to sleep from 4 am to 12 pm ish because of the delayed onset of melatonin but if you let us go to bed at the time we need? most of us actually sleep pretty well and consistently.
wAIT THIS IS AN ACTUAL THING THAT EXISTS
“For most adults the onset of melatonin is around 9.30 pm; in ADHD children compared to controls this occurs at least 45 minutes later, and in adults with ADHD even 90 minutes (van der Heijden ea, 2005; van Veen ea 2010). After melatonin onset, it normally takes 2 hours to fall asleep, but in adults with ADHD it takes at least 3 hours (Bijlenga et al, 2013).”
Look at me awake at 1:47 am and reblogging this post.
So I’m actually trained in therapy for addressing insomnia and one of the things we learned is that a good chunk of sleep problems are societal disorders - as in they WOULDN’T EXIST as problems if society didn’t assume everyone was on the same circadian rhythm and that being up and working 9-5 was mandatory/normal. Blew my mind and made so much sense. You are not the problem, society is literally the problem.
4am to noon THIS IS ME
I’m not diagnosed with ADHD but I regularly sleep well from 1-5 am to noon. Usually I’ll go to bed around 2:30. Luckily my work schedule allows me to do this
Someone asked me how they can help their loved one doing what they have to do - so here is a Follow up to my Buttons (Executive Dysfunction) Comic! This is especially for when an Alien is STUCK. We don’t need all the tips and not every day, but just like anybody else, we might just be in a slump. An executive slump Aliens, use this for yourselves as well if you want! EDIT: Ahh I forgot. I got the Idea of making my house ADHD friendly from this Video by Susan Pinsky
I know it’s illegal but whenever I get antibiotics from the doctor I save a few and give them to friends or coworkers who don’t have insurance so that when cold season comes they might be able to shorten their illness
That is not good- that’s not quite how antibiotics work.
Antibiotics kill some bacteria, but don’t manage to kill other bacteria. Just like when you get a particular sickness (or a vaccination), your body can protect you from future infections, any bacteria that came into contact with the antibiotic is protected from future doses of that antibiotic. Bacteria are very virulent breeders, so they spawn more resistant bacteria.
If you take the full dose of antibiotics, your natural antibodies can deal with the cells that are resistant while the medicine kills off the bacteria that isn’t resistant. If you don’t take the full course of antibiotics, then your body has to deal with both the resistant and the non-resistant strains of bacteria, and it can become overwhelming. Also, most bacteria are able to pass on genes between still-living cells, so that previously non-resistant strains become resistant, and you have inadvertently cultivated a stronger strain of bacteria.
Furthermore, colds and the flu are viral infections, so antibiotics don’t work against them anyway. The best protection against viral infections are vaccinations, as there are not many viruses that we have developed anti-viral medication against, once you already have the disease. If there are anti-viral medications, it is even more important that you take the full dose of the medication, because anti-viral medication is even harsher against the body than antibacterial medication is.
How antibiotics work
How antiviral medication works
Spread this around; antibiotics are not candy
To put it shortly: antibiotics don’t do shit for the cold. You need to take the entire bottle that is prescribed to you. People not doing that is how antibiotic resistant infections crop up. People like OP are literally why diseases like MRSA exist.
OP shouldn’t feel bad about good intentions but this is really dangerous. There’s also the risk that your friends are allergic to the specific type of antibiotics you give them.
things that a better-off person can do for their sick less-well-off friends that don’t involve breeding superbacteria through misue of antibiotics:
Buy them cold medicine
Buy them cough drops
Buy them fancy tissues with lotion
Make them too much soup to eat in one go and freeze half for later
Find them a low-cost clinic and accompany them there
Tell them you are giving them their day’s wages and they are staying home Friday/Monday and then do.
Go to their house. Wash the dishes, take out the garbage, walk the dog, scoop the cat or just plain change the whole litter box, clean the bathtub and mom voice them until they take a hot shower or steam their head.
if they have asthma or bronchitis and are out of inhaler but you have a half-full one, that is a thing you can sanitize and share.
ditto palliative prescription medication like “I have half a bottle of lidocaine gargle, you want it?” “I am bringing you the rest of my Robitussin with codeine” “here harvest some ibuprofen from my giant bottle of 1,000 ibuprofen”
I feel like some of this should have been covered in high school health class. It would do a lot to combat misuse of antibiotics. Superbacteria is really dangerous for everyone but is particularly bad for people with multiple antibiotic allergies and will lead to hospital stays for IV antibiotics of kinds they can take.
Agreed. High school health class curricula simply haven’t been set up to take into account a future in which the middle class has dissolved and a huge chunk of Americans can’t afford to go to a doctor if they get a cold. - _ -
Last year, I had caught a bad case of strep throat. I usually get it a couple of times a year because my tonsils suck, but this time it was BAD. I was taking amoxicillin like I had been before, but nothing was happening. I was still sick 2 weeks later. I told my doctor and he gave me a different antibiotic and it cleared up.
I was telling one of my friends about all of it, and he says “Oh do you need some amoxicillin? I never finished my bottle when I got strep because it went away after like 3 days”.
Like a week before I got sick, that same friend and I were out having dinner, and we shared a bit of food. This asshat gave me an amoxicillin-resistant strain of strep throat because he didn’t finish his antibiotics. I couldn’t eat anything solid and could barely drink for 2 weeks because someone thought he was “feeling better and didn’t need medicine”.
Finish your god damn antibiotics people!!!!
Yeah, i was taught this in year 3. This is just another thing you americans can add to your “why our our educational system is crap” list and its really scary how this isnt common knowledge there
