Marthe hovers at the bedside with Matthew, a comforting hand resting lightly on his shoulder. She had seen Ysabeau through her worst days after Philippe had rescued her from the cage her sire had kept her in during those early years of rebirth. She knows better than anyone how strong she is. How strong her will to live has always been- Ysabeau's heart may be broken, but it would keep on beating. It doesn't have it in it to stop.

She squeezes Matthew's shoulder and murmurs words to those effect as he pours the warm blood into his mother's mouth. Proving her words right, Ysabeau's body reacts instinctively to the taste of the sustenance it has been denied, her throat moving again as she swallows. Her eyes do not yet open, but one of her hands grasps weakly at her son's wrist, pulling the cup he holds to her mouth again. She drinks greedily, her tongue moving of its own accord to lap up any stray droplets that land on her lips rather than in her mouth.

It is only when the cup is empty that Ysabeau releases her hold on Matthew's wrist, her grip having already grown stronger. Her head lolls against the pillows as he allows her to lie back again and is presented with flickers of emerald, cold and beautiful, as she slowly blinks up at the two vampires standing at her bedside. Her gaze shifts from Matthew to Marthe and then back again.

"You gave him respite from his pain, but you won't allow me the same." Ysabeau's voice cracks on the words, both from emotion and from disuse. "Why, Matthew?"

"Because I need you to get better. I lost one parent will you truly leave me orphaned and alone?" It is not the entire truth but if he leaned something from his mother it was the art of women using emotional manipulation to get their way and he was a studious and fast learner and entirely unashamed to deploy her own weapons against her. He loves her dearly, you see, and it destroyed him already to do what needed to be done.

"Can you leave us for a moment please, Marthe." Matthew requested his mother's closest confidant to allow them the room.

"Philippe was a pillar of strength, the man that would have returned would have been but a shell of the man we knew. He would resent the indignity and you know it. You know your husband well,maman. Philippe did not fear death but he did fear indignity. Achilles did not return to Phthia weeping the loss of his men and Patroclus. He died with vengeance in his heart...and Philippe, as history is concerned, died behind enemy lines and the last person that witnessed him was not a stranger, not a captor but his own son. A mercy I hope we are given as well." Matthew went to sit on the bed on the unoccupied side above the covers and stroked Ysabeau's hair.

"When your mind is broken, when I look at you and I don't see you anymore, should that day come I will give you respite. I will hold you gently and I will make it swift and merciful and the last hands that touch you will be full of reverence and love. But it is not today Ysabeau." Whether he meant his pledge or not was for history to know. "Mourn your husband. But I will not allow my mother to die in grief. I will come and feed you every night by force if I have to until you are strong enough to fight me off."

Matthew took her hand and kissed it, grabbing his rosary from his pocket.

He had already prayed the Apostole's creed and Our Father.

"Hail Mary, full of grace, The Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou amongst women, And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners, Now and at the hour of our death." he repeated three times praying for his mother who did not believe in the same God nor Mary.

Penance, is what she presented vampirism as. An eternity of penance and redemption

Matthew was the first person who would hear the story of Amadeo’s turning from Armand’s mouth. He wasn’t traumatized by it, at least not consciously. Being given the Dark Gift, no matter how, was a painful experience. The body was dying, the waste of the body would leave it as if you were going through great pain. Nothing can prepare a mortal body for this process, which is why he never wanted to give it to Daniel in the first place. But it happened somehow. “Only Marius knew what his reasons were. I always thought that this was the way the Dark Gift was given, but in Paris I learned the truth.” Centuries after his own making. The younger vampire nodded a little when Matthew enlightened Armand about the making of Marcus. “You informed and warned him as much as possible. More than most of us were.” Armand clicked his tongue before a soft, almost mocking little laugh fell from his lips. He wasn’t mocking Matthew but himself. “The pain and the humiliation of my making never bothered me. I can fight, and I can endure. I wanted it. I wanted it in all its gruesomeness. But I will never forget the moments on my deathbed, knowing that my Master’s love for me was not great enough. I always knew, but I decided to turn a blind eye. Because it is easier to ignore than to face the truth. My ignorance to accept the truth that followed me for centuries.” Maybe he was still ignorant, Armand couldn’t know, but he decided not to dwell on that thought further as he rather indulged in the amusement of what his new co-workers were thinking about him. And he could vividly imagine their curiosity as Armand made sure to keep his online presence to a minimum. There wasn’t much they could find about him in the first place.

“You are not dull,” Armand said after he squeezed Matthew’s hand. It took almost all of the vampire’s mental strength to let go and not hold onto that larger hand, as it was feeling a little too nice. They were friends. Well, and now Matthew was his boss, so Armand should be a responsible person and treat their professional relationship as such: professional. A soft little chuckle fell from Armand’s lips as he finally pulled his hand away, shaking his head a bit. “Are you?” he asked, even though it was none of his business. “I know most of our kind don’t consider gender as important, but you give me the impression of having preferences, not for the male side.” Armand winked teasingly and nodded a bit. “Thank you. I will make sure to stir some gossip.” With a mischievous little grin, Armand then left the office and went back to his new work with a little bit of help from Marcus.

With each day, Armand enjoyed his new work and purpose a little more. He enjoyed Matthew’s presence, the little breaks they would take together, the silent research moments in the library they shared, or some fun activities done together after work.

Two months went by quickly, and Armand’s suffering from his failed marriage passed much quicker than he thought because he felt comfortable in London. By now, he has even become friends with most of his co-workers (as much as you can be friends with Armand, that is). 

With their Christmas break, their trip to Venice finally started. It was highly anticipated and feared at the same time. Not to mention the gossip and rumours this caused among the others. No one believed that they went off to Venice to work, even though it was the case. Armand even booked a one-day trip to Rome for them. Because if they couldn’t find the answers in Venice, maybe they could find answers in Rome, where Santino’s Coven had been located.

Armand held the handle of his trolley suitcase as they left the airport together. “I organized a water taxi for us. It’s much easier, come.” Of course, he would not make Matthew squeeze into some kind of public transport like a bus, train, or whatever. And the Venice Marco Polo Airport had a direct connection to water transportation.

“I am almost relieved that centuries have passed.” Armand started talking as they made their way to the water taxi location. “It is quite a relief, even though I knew that Venice won’t look like 16th-century Venice anymore.” As they reached the taxis, a man held up a sign with Armand’s name. Politely and unbothered by changing languages, Armand introduced himself in Italian and held a short conversation. “I think my Italian is a little rusty,” Armand said to Matthew as he handed the mortal his suitcase. “I tried to educate myself on modern vocabulary, but I fear I still sound like a grandfather.”

Most vampires stopped caring for gender when the Dark Gift was bestowed on them whether because they were simply not confined by mortal viewpoints or because companionship changed, the needs changed, no longer driven by the instinct to keep their species alive by procreation. "I was married to a beautiful woman as a mortal...and taken no companion as a vampire. Dalliances never grew to real intimacy so one must wonder how to solve the equation with a data pool of one" he married very young as was normal in his era and Blanca remained the sole person he ever loved in that regard. "Mostly Disinterested does not make for a fun label I suppose" he addressed. "Live long enough to see a millennium and I doubt anyone remains ridigit in their ideas of what is beautiful. As a mortal, strictly my wife. Maybe we can blame her for being a good woman that kept my gaze and thus I was deprived discovering proclivities." Matthew fell into silence. "It sounded far funnier in my head. Out loud it sounds somewhat sad" England suited him fine for his dry sense of humour, he'd never be casually charming and full of jests.

Venice.

"Your Italian is better than mine" they would speak in Italian for their trip, out of the romantic languages he would consider Spanish his weakest and less practised and other than French, Greek to be his strongest as English was not one of the Romantics. Of course Greek was his strongest, he spent centuries speaking to Philippe for while they lived in France or travelled, his family honoured it's Patriarch by being primarily a Greek speaking household, although Philippe and Ysabeau both learned all the influencal languages to never be misunderstood or need to rely to translators.

"Or a tourist looking for the history. I think you sound more like an poet than a grandfather, languages change so fast" Matthew handed his suitcase to the driver. "I have endless gripes over the lazyification of language. Such as the English being woke. It is awake, socially awakened to the plights. Oh, don't listen to me. The curse of polyglots when they change the grammar nothing makes sense anymore" he somewhat grumbled and leaned back against the seat.

"I can imagine it is also a bit jarring, some of the old buildings still stand like memories haunting the landscape of modernization." Their journey from the airport to the serviced apartment felt longer due to the long flight time, Matthew disliked hotels and short let's might be extortionate due to Christmas but the privacy was a key factor. He knew a business man in Sicily that shipped them makeshift coffins, their modular design meant that by moving two panels around the seemingly plush looking ottoman boxes turned to rest boxes. Far from comfortable but by means of good blackout blinds and the boxes they would be safe, neither could starve off the day sleep indefinitely.

Matthew mostly trained himself to wake up earlier or sleep later rather than completely starve it off, and named the laboratory afternoon start as a work-life balance incentive and held classes early in the morning alternating the days to cope and then mortals saw him in all kinds of hours and the less they would question.

He read through his emails and forwarded one to the laboratory CCing Armand, if Oxford's funding fell through the University of Copenhagen made an attractive bid to fund their research. "I doubt Oxford will let us down, their reputation will not recover if they retract their funding from me but it's nice to have a fall back option in the back pocket. It is where I will go and study in the next thirty years" his life was in cycles. De Clermont became de Clairmont and onwards and upwards he'd drop out of public life for a decade or so when his lack of aging no longer went unnoticed, retrain in his field, build his reputation again.

Nicolas let the lecture wash over him. Of course he believed in art. People who did not believe in art did not run away from home to take up music, they did not found entire theaters. But he was too fond of complaining to ever stop, even for- or especially for- the things he most loved.

He kept trying, kept repeating the words Matthew gave him, trying to regurgitate the odd sounds. "I mastered the violin by throwing away everything else. You should have seen the quality of the books I sold to buy my first instrument. I gave up my life to spend death pursuing only my passions-" he began to say.

The interruption of his coven mates was a welcome distraction. "What is it? Is something wrong? What do they want?" he asked. Armand as coven leader may have kept a touch of distance. But it did not take a genius to see how closely enmeshed the other members of the theater were. Even now, Nicolas mind was reaching toward the two others. If not to talk telepathically, then at least to make contact, like brushing someone's hand when passing them.

"You must forgive their curiosity. We see so few elders here." Nicolas said, as if he wasn't the youngest of the bunch. The old strictures had culled the old, and kept fledglings weak. Even as Lestat's second fledgling, Nicolas had more strength to his blood than some of the troupe members that were significantly older. "And they have made themselves my minders." He said it with fondness. They were his, he was theirs, the most intimate of fusions.

But there was English to learn. With mostly-performative reluctance, Nicolas began again to repeat after Matthew. "Rarely do red roses rest on the river. Rarely do rhed roses rest on the river..." He tried to stop thinking of the words as words. Vampires were excellent mimics. If he thought of the r as an r, decades of habit made him want to say it the way he was used to. If he just copied the sound, as if he was repeating birdsong or the bark of a dog, his mouth would move as it will. "R-are-ly- do red roses..." it was easier this way, and he could hear the sound getting closer to Matthew's. "It's almost like a vowel rather than a consonant. Bird. Ir. Rrrr." The treacherous 'th' of 'ruthlessly' presented a spike in challenge in Nicolas' gradual progress.

"Defer back to the Greek Theta. Thalassa, ruthless." Nicolas, a boy educated in all the romantic languages now thrusted to learn a language that was more comfortable being three languages structures stacked on top of each other wearing a trenchcoat than being a language of her own. But Britain was expanding, Britain and Spain launched more ships seeking colonies than France and he was old enough to have watched maps change as empires rose and fell. There was no doubt in his mind, next century Latin would disappear and perhaps English would rise in the gap.

"And I might very well be the last. Ancients present a threat to any Coven Master-" although Armand's talent with the Mind Gift made him too dangerous and enemy to make but certainly a reason to keep wide berths. But oh, he could have not offered but every minute he spent tutoring Nicolas is a minute longer in their territory, another minute of observant eyes studying, assessing, seeking weaknesses. The them versus us became a bigger divide the more humanity moved on and they did not, soon mortals might speak languages they did not and they'd grow even more insular.

"Keep practising. You are distracted by your coven mates and tiredness brings frustration. I will see you next week Nicolas." He gathered the reading material Nicolas would not need. "Practise vocalising the Alphabet in English at least thrice a day. Have yourself a pleasant night" the tunnel exit was once more obscured.

Next time. Maybe next time he'd slip away, or the week after that, the month after. Patience was a virtue that was easy to have when you were so eternal.

VAMPIRE THEMED MEME ✐ ( @clairmontblooded )

It had been several months since Louis and Armand moved to Dubai. It was a gorgeous, luxurious city they called their new home, far away from the States and Europe, where they shared nothing but bad memories. They were still in the process of furnishing their luxurious penthouse, but it didn’t save them from regular arguments and quarrels.

Armand was determined to have a magnolia tree in their (small) reading room, while Louis wanted an antique-style library. Armand wanted hanging bookshelves in a more modern look. It was always little things that caused the couple to argue. What annoyed Armand the most was that Louis wanted to display Claudia’s yellow dress. To him, it was the equivalent of eternal torment. For over 70 years, Armand had been trying to make up for his mistakes, and the only thing Louis could think of was to put a reminder of that “mistake” in a display case in a room of their home.

Of course, they argued about it again for hours until Armand finally decided to leave the house for a hunt. In the upcoming days, they would finally meet their personal assistant, Rashid, but until then, there was still much to do. To avoid catching anyone’s attention, Armand wore black pants, black shoes, a black turtleneck, and a dark gray knee-length coat. His outfit was actually too warm for the temperatures in Dubai, but luckily, vampires couldn’t sweat. 

Armand deliberately stayed away from the brightly lit streets. Dubai was incredibly clean and tidy. A city so much younger than the vampire himself. The people and the culture fascinated him, and the language enchanted Armand even more. It felt like a new beginning, and he was so determined to make their marriage work finally. Maybe with a new start on a new continent, they could finally leave it all behind. Maybe Louis could let go of Claudia and Lestat. Armand pressed his lips together, and his brows furrowed. Lestat has never left their marriage, as Armand was painfully aware of Louis’s continuing hallucinations and his crumbling mind. And there was nothing he could do. There was no love in Louis’s heart for him, no matter what he did, no matter how hard he tried.

Lost in his thoughts, Armand didn’t even notice where his feet were taking him, and he definitely forgot about his original plan of having a snack. He wasn’t hungry, but that wasn’t what bothered him. 

Armand stopped in his tracks at some point. His mind was perfect static noise to everyone around, as it always was, but there was a certain presence that made him much more aware of keeping the wall around his mind. The presence he felt was old and strong. It must be a blood drinker like Armand, a blood drinker he certainly encountered before, because what he felt radiated familiarity. Armand stopped in his tracks, even though it was just a brief pause. He didn’t look around; he didn’t even flinch. Seemingly unbothered, Armand took a turn to slip into a small dark alley between buildings. But whoever there was, the ancient one seemed to follow him. Could it be possible that it was the same blood drinker he met in France and in the States briefly? The ancient who had been so appalled by the Theatre des Vampires? But what would he do here in Dubai? From what Armand figured out so far, Louis and he were the only vampires around.

Was the ancient trying to get to Louis or Armand? Was he here for a fight? Was he looking for something? Armand clenched his hands into fists in the pockets of his coat while he kept a steady pace. Should he voice out a warning? Should he ignore it? Armand was a very skilled psychic, but he couldn’t tell how skilled the ancient was, as Armand hadn't tested his skills on vampires that were much older than him, other than fully closing his mind to everyone. Could he enter the mind of an ancient one? 

I am aware of your presence, ancient one!

Armand pushed the message into the unknown ancient’s mind. His voice was silken, smooth, and calm. Deliberately, he made his voice sound indifferent and non-threatening. A physical fight was certainly something Armand would not survive. But at the same time, one thing the former coven master learned was that asserting dominance was crucial. No matter how much the presence of someone old and powerful worried him, he had to show strength, as even an ounce of weakness could become Louis’s and Armand’s demise.

"It's probably the motor, you do abuse the poor thing" Matthew expected many things to give Armand turmoil and upset, his favourite blender no longer working warranting such upset was not something he ever expected. But vampires tended to have unique interests at times, passions that might not always be mainstream. "We can probably fix it- come on he suggested. He was quite good at fixing things, it probably was as simple as buying a replacement motor and a bit of wire work.

They'd find the part serial number, buy a replacement motor and three weeks later here they were taking poor Cassius apart , a task which the ancient took as seriously as battlefield surgery showing Armand how to take out the motor, how to sever the wires and how to solder them back on the board.

Cassius would never be the same again but with an enthusiastic loud whirl it's blades spun once more.

"Well done" Matthew praised patting Armand's shoulder with a kiss to his head. "Perhaps now you ought to treat your poor blenders a little more gently?" Fat chance of that happening.

There was only very little that Armand kept with him after he moved from Dubai to London. Objects and other belongings could quickly get replaced again, nothing that was really valuable to Armand that he would carry around from country to country. Maybe he was already too detached from everything to really care. His tablet and his phone were among the few exceptions to that rule, but mainly due to the access he needed to his favorite games or important accounts to handle business with. But there was one thing that travelled around the world with him. One object that went through good and bad times with him: a purple blender.

Cassius, as he called the purple blender lovingly, has become something like his emotional support at times. He would literally blend everything with it when he felt inner turmoil and needed to relax from emotional stress. Armand loved the loud noise Cassius would make and how sharp the blades were, so that they could turn almost everything into a liquid texture. His favorites were rats, mainly because he loved the bright red colour.

But a few weeks ago, Armand’s mood drastically soured when Cassius refused to work. No matter how often Armand pushed the buttons, it wouldn’t work. At first, the vampire tried to brush it off. It was just a blender, right? He could just buy himself a new one and throw the old one away. But Cassius was precious to him. Armand will never find a perfect blender like that. A perfect, pretty blender. The new ones weren’t loud enough. Whoever had the idea of making blenders quieter should be eaten. Oh, when Armand finds this damn person, he’ll eat them. But what really surprised him was Matthew’s sharp observation. The older vampire quickly noticed Armand’s silence and his upset facial expression when no one else was looking. And so he had to come clean, no matter how embarrassing and absurd it might sound.

Armand took Matthew to the kitchen and presented him with the purple blender for inspection. “Can you fix Cassius again?” Armand asked after hearing that the motor might be broken. There was a bit of hope lingering in Armand’s small voice while he held Cassius’s jar against his chest. But he trusted Matthew on this. When the older vampire said he could possibly fix the blender, Armand trusted him. It took them a bit to find the serial number and a replacement motor online. Cassius wasn’t for sale anymore, too old and too loud. But they somehow found a motor at some point, which took three more weeks to arrive. Three weeks in which Armand was still emotionally stressed out. But after three weeks, torture was finally over.

Once again, Armand held Cassius’ jar with the lid against his chest while he looked over Matthew’s shoulder. Big, amber-coloured eyes watched every step, and at some point, he put the jar aside to help. Armand took all the directions well and followed them very diligently. Vampires were good mimics, and therefore, he could imitate Matthew pretty well despite not understanding much about repairing things.

As soon as they were done with everything, they put Cassius back together, and Armand inserted the plug back in. His nervousness was rising, and even his finger was slightly trembling before he pushed the button. For a split second, Armand worried that their repairs didn’t work, but then Cassius’ blades started swirling around again with an incredibly loud noise. Armand clutched his hands in front of his chest, and a gasp fell from his lips.

“Cassius is back alive!!!” Big eyes sparkled as he turned to face Matthew. “He works again!!!” Armand wrapped his arms around the older Vampire and nearly jumped at him in pure enthusiasm. “Thank you! You saved his life!” He pursed his lips a little. “I am always treating them gently.” Not really. Was he sounding odd to Matthew now? “But fine, I’ll use the rats on a newer one then. But Cassius has such a nice sound to him. I can’t help it. His noises calm me down. I ought to use him a little less, I know.”

Oh, what a sweet, sweet pain. A blissful little smile appeared on Armand’s lips just when Matthew squeezed his hands so firmly that it hurt. And yet, the taunting sparkle in Armand’s eyes didn’t seem to fade. No, on the contrary, he started rocking his hips sensually. He brought their groins together, grinding against Matthew’s lap to create some friction on their clothed crotches. 

Big, amber-coloured eyes focused on Matthew’s handsome face, unwilling to break the intense eye contact just for a second. Even though his heart couldn’t beat, he almost felt like he could hear something like a heartbeat of excitement. And he watched closely how the other man’s jaw tightened as he was searching for the right words. He watched each little reaction in that divine face and bathed in how Matthew looked back at him. As much as he wanted to say something, he wanted to hear every word Matthew was saying and therefore remained silent for as long as possible until he saw the yearning. The same yearning was in his eyes as well.

His lips parted, but only a moan of pleasure caused by the pain of nails digging into his hands. Some of his dark curls fell into his face as he leaned down a little more until his lips could brush over Matthew’s teasingly. His hands were throbbing, but it did not matter to him. “Do I?” he asked huskily, whispering against Matthew’s lips. “Hm, yes, I do. I fall into your arms, willingly. But was I the prey?” Oh, he only said that to push Matthew’s buttons a bit. Because he wanted to see it. He wanted to see the put-together, sophisticated man crumble to see the raw man behind it.

“Yes. That’s what I want.” He did not let go of Matthew’s hand right away; he required a bit of force before his fingers released the older, but then he finally got the blissful feeling again of having his head snapped back and fangs digging into his flesh. Wantonly, almost shamelessly, he moaned out loud as he closed his eyes in bliss. Even his body trembled just so slightly, but this moment of distraction was enough that the next move caught Armand off guard positively.

A groan of lust and pain slipped past Armand’s lips the moment his back was slammed against the mirror. Fiercely, the younger Vampire moved his lips against Matthew’s. Sharp fangs scraped tongues, and the taste of blood filled his mouth. Both of his palms pressed against the mirror the moment he was turned around. A lustful groan slipped past his lips, only because he could feel how much Matthew wanted him.  And he loved it. He loved feeling the ancient’s power radiating from his aura and his firm voice. His eyes focused on the mirror, but he tried to catch a glimpse of Matthew’s handsome face from that position instead of looking at his own reflection.

The younger vampire wiggled his hips just so slightly as his upper body was restrained by the hand between his shoulder blades. His trousers, along with the underwear, slipped down his lean, long legs and stopped at his ankles. Armand gasped at the feeling of his already hardening cock finally being freed of that confinement. Oh, how much he loved that tone. It made Armand smirk a bit, but he followed the order. He lifted his left foot first to free himself from his garments, then he did the same with the right foot before he kicked his pants away with a quick movement of his right foot.

His back arched a bit, then he moved his left foot to the side, spreading his legs further apart. Then he adjusted himself a little to stand firmly on his feet while his palms pressed against the cracked mirror. And he stood still until that firm hand curled around his already throbbing length. Thick drops of blood ran over the back of his hands, and some glass shards cut the pads of his fingers, and blood stained the glass. But none of that bothered him. Armand moved his hips as he tried to thrust a bit against Matthew’s slow hand movement.

And push his buttons he certainly did the way Matthew snarled with a growl pushing their noses together, centuries of restrained and poised control unravelling under Armand's goading and delicate fingers touching him, he realised a little too late that he had fallen into the young one's trap and given Armand exactly the reaction the younger vampire was hoping for. The more Matthew tried to warn him the more the younger vampire seemed to almost grin victorious.

"Then we both wasted time waiting, time we will never recover and who's fault is that my little fireheart?" he purred in Armand's ear, winking at him from the mirror, a kiss to his cheek, a kiss to the nape of his neck, Matthew's hand gently stroking that proud cock and he did allow Armand to curl his fingers around his wrist as he kissed down the length of the vampire's spine. They were half a foot apart in height and this would just be for foreplay as said height would get in the way in the heat of passion...unless....for a moment Matthew contemplated how it could end up working...could always sweep him into his arms...women were easy, men were complicated, the ancient vampire figured that when the passions grew unbearable they would just figure out who does what and how they would bridge that height difference.
