                 digits  comb  through  her  hair  ,  her  voice  quivers  as  she   tells  him  about  what  she’d  seen.    thankfully  ,  judy  was  still  asleep   or   she  would   have  came   rushing  in  to  check  on  them.    he  listens  to  her  words  -–  he  was  there  and  than ?   ed  knew  when  to  ask  or  . .  when  to simply  be  present.   instead  of  asking  what  happened  ,   a  breath   escapes   his  lips  as  his  chest  rises  and  falls  slowly.   he   tries  to  pull  her  into  his  state   of  mind      “i’m  right  here  ,  lorraine.   i  won’t  be  going  anywhere,    ”   arm   drops  down  to   pull   the  blanket  up  to  his  chest.   he  holds  her,  almost  cradling  her  in  his   arms     “     i’ll  keep  the  light  on,     ”   just  until  she’s  fallen  asleep  . .  she  could  see  for  her  own  eyes  that  he  hasn’t  disappeared.    lips   press  against   her  forehead  ,  a  sensation  that  spreads  . .  a  warmth  that  tells  her ,  this  is  REAL.  

the  whole  world  is  stripped  away,  one  cleansing  breath  at  a  time,  and  there  is  only  him.  after  so  many  years  side  by  side,  he’s  come  to  know  exactly  when  something  is  amiss  and  exactly  how  to  rope  her  back  in,  pull  her  to  safety.  he  does  what  even  she  cannot!  a  deep  exhale  departs  her  lips  as  she  holds  tight  to  his  strong  frame   /   LITTLE  BY  LITTLE,  she  begins  to  will  negative  thoughts  away.  will  she  be  sleeping  the  rest  of  the  night?  only  time  will  tell.   ❝   talk  to  me  about  something.  anything.   ❞    a  simple  request.  anything  to  hear  the  sound  of  his  voice  just  for  a  few  moments  more,  just  until  they  can  fall  back  into  some  semblance  of  the  peaceful  rest  they’d  lost.
