This just seems to fit today. Lyrics are By Myself by Linkin Park.
āIf you canāt do anything about it then let it go. Donāt be a prisoner to things you canāt change.ā
ā Tony Baskin
Easier said than done, yet worth doing nonetheless.
Omitting parts of who you are, what you experience, feel, believe does no one any good. Emotional honesty is difficult, but worth it.
Found this on Facebook and damn if it isn't me, lol. I really want to get some writing done today, if I can get the gray matter to cooperate.
āWrite regularly, whether you feel like writing or not, and whether you think what youāre writing is any good or not.ā
ā Anne Lamott
Advice I really ought to take.
No worries
mundane scenes are important.
This is some unconventional writing advice, but here me out, because it's important and I don't see it being talked about enough:
Not every scene you write has to be essential to drive your plot forward. That's it. And your story doesn't need to be at high stakes at all times to be considered interesting, either.
Your scenes, that you include, should always be crucial to your story. Not important. Crucial. So, yes, it is important that your story isn't filled with scenes that don't affect or drive your plot forward, but it is also okay to include scenes in which your characters simply... exist.
Maybe it's not necessary to show your characters at work, signing papers at a desk (unless a dragon comes in and sets fire to the place or they get fired), but it might be necessary to have your characters invite a couple friends over, make some pancakes, and crack some jokes! A scene like that, while it might not contribute much to the overall plot of your story, will help bring life into it!
Giving your audience glimpses into your characters life, not only helps them connect with your characters, but it's a way for them to start caring more deeply about both your characters and the relationship between them.
Your story CANNOT simply be ACTION ACTION ACTION. Yes, it is important for your scenes contribute to your plot, but you can't forget the importance of establishing characters, as well as the world they live in and the dynamics between them!
YOUR PLOT IS ONLY HALF OF IT. If a scene is rendered useless in terms of plot development, but contributes in any way to the development of a character or relationship, it is not useless, nor is it a waste of space!
Learn what it means for a scene to be completely useless and what it means for it to be useful in terms of characterization, worldbuilding or exposition. You don't need to cut those scenes. Every scene has to serve a purpose, but there is a lot of purposes to be served.
So let your characters breathe, even for just a second. There needs to be down time. Otherwise the emotional impact you try to bring upon your audience won't come into play, because they have not been given enough time with your characters to start caring about them.

I feel just a bit called out by this! š¤£
oh! I have to tell you guys a great story one of my professors told me. So he has a friend who is involved in these Shakespeare outreach programs where they try to bring Shakespeare and live theatre to poor and underprivileged groups and teach them about English literature and performing arts and such. On one of their tours they stopped at a young offenders institute for women and they put on a performance of Romeo and Juliet for a group of 16-17 year old girls. It was all going really well and the girls were enjoying and laughing through the first half - because really, the first half is pretty much a comedy - but as the play went on, things started to get quiet. Real quiet. Then it got up to the suicide scene and mutterings broke out and all the girls were nudging each other and looking distressed, and as this teacher observed them, he realised - they didnāt know how the play ended. These girls had never been exposed to the story of Romeo and Juliet before, something which he thought was impossible given how ubiquitous it is in our culture. I mean, the prologue even gives the ending away, but of course it doesnāt specify exactly how the whole ātake their lifeā thing goes down, so these poor girls had no idea what to expect and were sitting there clinging to hope that Romeo would maybe sit down for a damn minute instead of murdering Paris and chugging poison - but BAM he died and they all cried out - and then Juliet WOKE UP and they SCREAMED and by the end of the play they were so upset that a brawl nearly broke out, and thatās the story of how Shakespeare nearly started a riot at a juvenile detention centre
Apparently something similar happened during a production of Much Ado at Rikers Island because a bunch of inmates wanted to beat the shit out of Claudio, which is more than fair tbh
honestly Shakespeare would be so pleased to know his plays were nearly starting brawls centuries into the future
I played Claudio once and I fully support this
āWhen we took Shakespeareās āMeasure for Measureā into a maximum security womanās prison on the West Sideā¦thereās a scene there where a young woman is told by a very powerful official that āIf you sleep with me, I will pardon your brother. And if you donāt sleep with me, Iāll execute him.ā And he leaves the stage. And this character, Isabel, turned out to the audience and said: āTo whom should I complain?ā And a woman in the audience shouted: āThe Police!ā And then she looked right at that woman and said: āIf I did relate this, who would believe me?ā And the woman answered back, āNo one, girl.ā And it was astonishing because not only was it an amazing sense of connection between the audience and the actress, but you also realized that this was a kind of an historical lesson in theater reception. Thatās what must have happened at The Globe. These soliloquies were not simply monologues that people spoke, they were call and response to the audience. And you realized that vibrancy, that that sense of connectedness is not only what makes theater great in prisons, itās what makes theater great, period.ā

Always useful to keep something like this around.
I started this writing journey back in 2017 living by "everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear". It's the truth for me, especially when it comes to writing and being published. While I recognized that everything I wanted was indeed on the other side of fear, that fear still controlled me. Fear has, in some way or another, controlled my life for longer than I care to admit.
It still does.
The difference now is that I'm fighting it. I'm done letting fear dictate so many aspects of my life. Of course, saying that doesn't magically make it all go away. It's a battle every single day. Some days I emerge triumphant, others I stagger away from, bloodied, bruised and wanting to give up. Yet I don't. Surrender isn't in my vocabulary.
One moment, one minute, one hour, one day at a time, I will defeat this beast. I will chase down that dream, no matter how long it takes. I don't pretend to know what achieving it will look like, other than seeing my work on a store shelf. Romance, erotic romance and pure smut have been my focus for a long time. While I still love writing them, I've been branching out to further explore other genres. What finally makes it across that finish line could be anything at this point.
Do I expect this to be easy? Nope. I'm crazy, not delusional. I expect some days it will be a battle and others as easy as breathing. I will push through when I can and show myself understanding and compassion when I can't. I will celebrate the little wins and acknowledge the hard days and losses without dwelling on them. Fear will no longer determine my destiny. I will.
Hey, look at that, I'm back! Wow, how long has it been? The last couple of years have destroyed all concept of time for me. But life is turning around and I think it's about time I got back to it. Will the first thing be smut? Romance? Psychological horror? Who knows - not me!
My kind of people!
