‘Obviously I’m gonna plug my asshole with it.’ extends a hand. ‘Don’t be a stinge.’
‘Makes sense.’ She nods, motion passed, appeal for bubblegum granted, and flicks a square of gum in his direction. It bops him gently on the nose. ‘You really been up to a whole lotta nothing this whole time?’ she asks, in a sounds-fake-but-ok sort of tone.

Before she goes all hokey-magic on the bartender: “Are you okay? I get the feeling like you physically expired, like, just walked off the mortal coil for a minute there.” After she goes all hokey-magic on the bartender: “What the fuck?”
She could go to the effort of explaining, or making up some incredible lie, but: ‘I’m very persuasive, Michael.’
dramatic sigh for effect as he breezy-bullshits past that topic. ‘Oh, you know. School. Homework. Girls. –– missed ya, sure, like a hole in the head. You got any more of that gum?’
‘Depends. What d’ya wanna do with a stick of gum? You got a hole in your submarine you wanna plug up? Cuz I’m tellin’ you, it’s not gonna be of any use. You need a professional-grade hole-plugger for that.’
Fffucker. “I’m a kicker.”
‘We’re all kickers in the eyes of the Lord.’ What. What? Rolling with it. She shuffles to stretch her legs out, back against the headboard, and sighs like she’s just getting off a long 9-5 day.
Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight, 2011 (dir. Eliza Hittman)
She’s scratching at her skin like she’s infected with something. It hurts and it’s not a good hurt; nothing ever is. People say that because they think it’s bittersweet, because they want to sound romantic, because they want to make burns and scars and needle-marks on the insides of elbows into something beautiful. She doesn’t feel beautiful.
Twice she forgets her name, stares at her hands like she doesn’t understand them. People ask her where she’s going and she says she doesn’t know. There’s a thread running through her, like biting down on tinfoil, but it’s so small and thin that she doesn’t know how to pull at it, and even if she did she’s sure all she could ever do is snap it in two and feel it recoil like shooting a gun, threading a shockwave down the length of her spine.
Nobody will kiss scars like this. Nobody will tell her those bags under her eyes make her look tragic and beautiful. She cards a hand through her hair and her fingers come away damp with grease or rainwater or something else. When she talks she spits rust. Find her on a street corner waiting for it to rain so she can scrub her skin clean. There’s too much in the taste of nothing. She breathes and oxygen sticks in her throat like paste, like something clogging up an artery.
A hand on the back of her neck. Her own, or someone else’s. She says, ‘I don’t want to die.’ She doesn’t. She won’t.
