Ever wondered what it takes to be a member of a DCI drum corps? Well here's the guide for you!
To people auditioning for DCI2017
It was around this time last year that I went after a dream of mine. To anyone that is trying out for a drum corps this weekend, enjoy it. Give it everything you got. If you don’t fully jump into it, you’re only hindering yourself, so enjoy the process, make friends, learn something, and never stop chasing that dream. You’ll never know what can happen until you go for it and put in the work.
To anyone that got cut this weekend
Don’t stress. Don’t panic. Don’t quit.
So many other places would be happy to have you. So many other camps are happening, so many other options are available.
By getting cut at one corps, you may find the corps that’s actually the best fit for you.
I could not be more thankful that I got cut at my first camp, because it moved me further down the path to finding the corps that I fell in love with(and the person I fell in love with, but that’s besides the point).
Don’t know where to start? Ask the caption head at the corps you auditioned for. Chances are, they would be more than happy to direct you to other corps to audition for.
Don’t think you can make it to another camp? Ask about video audition options.
I thought getting cut was the end of my journey, but it was actually just the beginning.
We're closer to the beginning of next season than the end of last. And that family will never be together again.
A metronome that follows you everywhere
Bro you don't know the half of it
Many ask what draws individuals back to the drum corps activity. My answer? The people.
I recently discovered a word.
A strange word with a narrow meaning, but a word nonetheless. One that only few experience and fewer still will comprehend.
Rückkehrunruhe – n. – the feeling of returning home after an immersive trip only to find it fading rapidly from your awareness
It strikes a chord. A dissonant seventh which resolves into a loving sixth. Because in this word we find every meaning of the adage, “Post-Tour Depression.” A wondrously awful experience which is seldom felt in the real world, but is the entire world for those of us lucky enough to spend our summers on the road with a family of 149 like-minded individuals.
In few activities do you become as close as we did. Laughing together. Crying together. Fighting together. Rubbing people the wrong way because you said something with just the wrong inflection and we’re 70 days in to this circus show and home isn’t home anymore. The gym isn’t home. Nor the bus nor the cook truck. But the people. The brothers, sisters, and mentors who all come together to perfect 12 minutes of entertainment. Fleeting. Longing for one more run. Straining to understand how an hour can feel like 5 minutes and vice versa. Contemplating the next meal or the next stage of life or why that ant is crawling on my leg; how’d you get up here anyways I’m on a box? Failing to understand how the summer could be so long yet where did it go? How is it over? How am I going to an old town which is familiar which is the last town? With a bed and a school and a car. Without the paint and the music and the pain device.
I don’t think we could ever capture that moment again. The summer. Just one sweeping moment of redundancy and complexity and crisscrossing of a continent. The love and hate. Fear and wonder. The thunderous applause of the masses as the final note rings as the performers smile and tears are shed because, in the blink of an eye, it’s now over.

Summer 2016
So it's been a while since I've said anything. I've just been busy with school and work and relationships and all that. I mean I just got my Associates in Science so that's cool! But yeah I last minute made my way into the hornline for the 2016 Colts. I can say with a fair amount of confidence that I was wrong in the past. This is where I belong. The show concept is beautiful. The music is so well written and so potent it's not even funny. The memberships' commitment is par above anything I've ever been in and the red line is one of the greatest sections I've ever marched with. I think this may be the year, guys
I did the thing
Hey everyone! As most of you, know a while back I proclaimed my intent to skip my age out season, but after seeing all my friends posting pre-training hype stuff, I'm beginning to miss sleeping on gym floors. Crazy, I know. So today I reached out to a couple groups and, pending a few formalitie...
Hey friends! So I caved and decided (very last minute) that I just couldn’t sleep in a bed or on a couch this summer. Sorry Couchmen, but maybe next year.
I flooded several inboxes with emails and received one contract offer and two video requests which I’m waiting to hear back from. But in short, I’ll be on field this summer with a tuba for my last season of DCI. I’ve got about $2900 accounted for, so at best I need at least $300 more plus miscellaneous fees. So, if you would be so inclined, please consider donating $5 towards these fees.
“Drum Corps International is a cooperative association of its member and participating organizations: We seek to promote and inspire unparalleled excellence in music and performing arts throughout the world.”
In short, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and after the streak of luck I’ve had with corps, I’d really like to finish on a good note with one of these three ensembles. Upon final contract offers, I’ll let everyone know where I’m planning on going this summer!
If you can’t donate, please consider sharing to help me out!
Thanks for any considerations and have a great night!
Hi friends! So update on this: I have a preliminary contract offer from the Cascades which I’m really excited about, but am waiting to hear back from both the Troopers and the Academy before making a decision. No matter what, I’m very excited for what this summer will bring and to visit parts of the country I’ve never, ever been to. Please continue to help and share and have a great day!

You could give me 5 rings and a jacket from each G7 corps but I’d still miss being on a gym floor after an Iowa all day

So time for the first Instagram post and time to announce some news that I’m a little sad to say myself. Due to some of the opportunities in being offered in the coming year concerning ultimate frisbee, I won’t be marching my DCI age out.
As much as I would love to march, I did tell myself that if Regiment didn’t happen, I would begin focusing on my future in this sport. I’m happy to say I’ll be spending the spring as a manager and co-captain of SIUe Ultimate EVille before moving to West Virginia where I’ll be receiving a $10k scholarship to play for OVU. Between those two times, I’ve been offered the chance to tryout for pro team Cincinnati Revolution and the St Louis club team Thoroughbred. I’m saddened that I won’t be on a field with a corps or band this summer, but I’m very excited to see where my ultimate career will be by this time next year.
Thanks for the support from everyone in the drum corps community this past year and I can’t wait to see what some of you do with your corps and future band programs.
Perhaps one of the most difficult decisions I've made considering the time and energy I put into rehearsals, individual practice, and physical therapy. But at some point you need to realize DCI is until 21 and the other sports you're in kind of require your knees.
