Interview with the artist Grace (Naudiir)

1.     Where do you get your inspiration for each piece? The internet and people around me.

2.     How long does it take you to draw a simple sketch? 5 minutes Watercolor hours, probably detailed drawing 15-30 minutes fabric art piece a week.

3.     How did your style develop? Through practice and influence from other artists.

4.     How hard is it to make a career of art? Pretty difficult. It's not easy to get your art out there even with social media. It's a side job at most.

5.     Who are your favorite artists? Albert Bierstadt, moxie Saturday, and Jef Bertels.

6.     Besides drawing, what other art forms do you enjoy and who are your favorite artists in things like writing and music? Books and music. Ray Bradbury is my favorite author and Bones is probably the most creative music artist I have listened to.

7.     What kind of places have you sold your art? Social media, art shows, friends? All of the above.

8.     What are some of your interests outside of art? Mostly history. Nature is cool too.

Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer and poet. Poe wrote poetry and short stories based on mystery and horror. A few of his most well-known writings include; “The Tell-Tale Heart” “The Raven” “Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”

While Poe worked as an editor and writer for most of his life, he was not successful at making a living from his writing during his lifetime, only becoming more well-known and admired after his death.

Famous after death

Famous artists that did not gain notoriety until after their death.

Vincent Van Gogh, Emily Dickinson, Franz Kafka, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, Galileo Galilei, John Keats, Oscar Wilde, Johann Sebastian Bach.

When we hear the names of these painters, writers, poets, and musicians, most people recognize them right away as being famous artists. But these artists were not as popular or famous during their lifetime as they became after their deaths.

Famous After Death

Vincent van Gogh:

Vincent Willem van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in Zundert, Netherlands and died on July 29, 1890, in France. The cause of his death was a gunshot wound to the chest; however, the circumstances of his death have always been in question with some saying he committed suicide while others believe he was murdered.

His art career was over a short ten-year span from 1880-1890. At the time of Vincent van Gogh’s death, he had sold only one painting.

van Gogh was considered a “tortured artist”. He had mental health issues throughout his life. At one point, van Gogh severed part of his ear off followed by him spending almost a year in an asylum.

van Gogh’s most famous painting is “The Starry Night” which is my personal favorite painting of all time. A few other famous ones are “Self-Portrait With Bandaged Ear” (this one he painted after cutting off part of his ear) and “Almond Blossoms” which he’s said to have painted in honor of the birth of his nephew.

Art for yourself or others?

Many artists tend to not like sharing their work with others. Art can be very personal to the artist. Grace Behm (the subject of this blog) for instance, was not willing to share her art with others for many years. It wasn’t her doubting how good she was, it was that her art was for herself and not intended for anyone else to see and certainly not for sale. Parting with your art creation can feel like selling a piece of yourself for the artist.

Many artists I’ve spoken with over the years feel the same way. Most artists in my experience are not creating art with the intention of making a profit or a living from it. For those artists that do want to pursue a career in art, it can be very difficult, hence the term “struggling artist”.
