It may be too late for Tumblr, but it’s not too late for you.

I wanna give you some things to think about before we get to Dec. 17.

First, some compliments:

Tumblr is a great product. It is.

Despite all my criticism, it’s definitely a digital institution of gravity and has a solid presence on the Internet.

It’s like 4chan but prettier, with a better user interface and your own micro-blog. You could find hardcore porn of any fetish and then cool down with relaxing aesthetics and mood boards.

It was great.

Key word: “was”.

Now, let’s get hypothetical.

Let’s assume you DIDN’T want this to happen…

Jeff, I know.

I get it.

You’re in a shitty situation.

Verizon has a gun to your head.

Your corporate overlords are forcing you to do something you may find morally repugnant. They’re forcing you to say things you don’t want to say, or at least writing them for you and putting your name on it.

(“Female-presenting nipples”? Jeff, please, you don’t want to be associated with that phrase.)

They’re destroying one of the greatest social media on the market, and you’re the fall guy.

They threw you under the bus, didn’t they, Jeff?

Let’s assume they did:

You could’ve resigned. You could have quit in protest, Jeff.

You could have walked out of the room or hung up the phone the moment you heard this was coming.

Don’t bother justifying or making excuses for them.

Yes, this IS about “free” speech.

Verizon is a private entity and may own the medium and thus may have a “right” to control their content.

But, even if it can’t be considered an

“attack” on free-speech, it certainly is an outright REJECTION OF IT!

They may only be banning visual “adult” content, for now. It will only be a matter of time before written “adult” content is purged, too.

It’s also about branding and visibility.

Without any content that could be labeled “adult”, what is Tumblr?

Instagram, Jeff.

Instagram.

It’s Instagram, but blue.

That’s your “edge” now, Jeff.

Tumblr is over. It’s a lost cause. There’s nothing that will stop Verizon from rendering it irrelevant.

There is no true equivalent social medium to what Tumblr will cease to be.

There’s nothing you can do to stop any of this.

You’ve got SEVEN (7) DAYS, one week, to quit.

To resign in protest.

If you do, I promise to take down all the negative things I’ve said about you on here.

If you really ever did care about a “better” Tumblr, you have a week to prove it. Don’t wait for them to fire you, and make you go down as the guy who killed Tumblr.
