An Alternative Storyline to Assassin's Creed: Shadows
Here's how they could have made it better while still maintaining diverse representation, historical "accuracy" and respect for Japanese culture. Character 1 is a traditional Japanese samurai with the same armor and weapons as Yasuke. Like Yasuke he is disgusted by the corruption and oppression he sees all around him. He is on a quest to be "justice" for the people of his country. The opening scene plays out exactly the same. Character 1 rides into the village, walks through it with VO and takes out the corrupt noble with a spiked tetsubo. It's brutal and bloody. After Character 1 kills the noble, one of the remaining henchmen ambushes him. His life is saved by a Character 2 who comes out of the shadows and reveals herself. Character 2 's mother was brought from Africa to Japan as a slave and given as a gift to a corrupt noble who then forced himself on her mother. Mother and/or Character 2 was cast out but taken in by the Assassins operating in Japan. Character 2 was trained to be an Assassin and works from the shadows with a similar agenda to Character 1; bringing justice to the people by taking out corrupt nobles. Character 1 is taken aback at first, but after hearing her story vows to assist her in her quest. The player is then given a choice of character selection and the game plays out as they've already made it. Two unique characters, both of whom are Japanese in a historically congruent/plausible storyline. Character 1 represents one playing style, Character 2 represents the more authentic AC experience. Character 2 is marketed as the "main" character and Character 1 is marketed as a complimentary counterpart with a different gameplay experience. There, I fixed it.
