As the semester comes to an end, I'm forced to think about what I've learned so far. It's all a lot of cool information, stuff that's really beneficial to know. Hopefully I'll be able to retain all of it. I'm going to miss this class, it was so fun. Dr. Nolan is my favorite professor at Texas State by far.

Finishing up the notes on Editing the Visual Story, we learned several terms that are pretty basic in the realm of editing, but are entirely new to me. These techniques are used in almost every film: an establishing shot, shot/reverse shot, eyeline match, re-establishing shot, multiple camera usage, axis of action (180 Degree Rule), match on action, cheat cuts, and The Kuleshov Effect. Also, the use of thematic relations are seen in montage sequences and crosscut editing.These are fairly simple techniques and can go unnoticed to the untrained eye; luckily, for us, we have been taught otherwise!

The hilarious quote above is by Rensberger, explaining how he's managed to stay successful by being a one-man team. It's always hard to imagine yourself working in the mass communication field. Sometimes it can get a bit intimidating and your plans for the future seam bleak, but Scott Rensberger and Anne Herbst had the most inspiring words of wisdom for MC 3319. I left class feeling so inspired; so in love with life. Basically, reinforcing the idea that we've all been taught since we were in kindergarten: Work Hard and Try Your Best. Not necessarily profound, but in order to be successful in this field, proving yourself is vital in becoming your own independent person. I will now go on rant of positive ideas that were mentioned in class that sometimes aren't grammatically correct: You have to create your own personal brand. Make sure people around you know what kind of stories you like. Find your own stories- start writing your own stories in your spare time. Every story has a beginning, a middle and an end- you're always working towards the ending. Prove yourself. The last thing you say- it has to be the most important thing.You have to stand out; you have to be so good that nobody can deny it. Actually, that last bit is a quote from Steve Martin about being funny...but it works here nonetheless.

There are 7 rhythmic transitional devices: straight cut, fade-out, fade-in, dissolve, wipe, flip frame, and jump cut. After being familiarized with these on Monday, I began seeing them everywhere. For example, in Liar Liar starring Jim Carrey before the hilarious "I've had better" scene, there is a graphic match right before the scene begins using a clock. I couldn't find it on Youtube, but I did find this clip from Pulp Fiction using one of the rhythmic transitional devices. Obviously, a fade-out and fade-in is used for comedic effect.

This video is obviously apparent movement;the most common type of movement after of course actual movement. I'm not sure, but they may have used a green screen to implicate the continual moving background. Either way, there's several peculiar things about this video. For people who haven't seen the movie, there are several clues that could predict the plot or infer something about the characters. The classic black and white suits contradict the setting and the dialogue, making it seem that the two men are untrustworthy. Also, John Travolta's head seem bigger than Samuel Jackson's body, letting us know that he is closer to the camera.

So, grades were posted! I'm beyond excited to say that I still have an A in the class. I wish I knew how to figure out my exact grade, though. While I was looking for the previous clip, I started rummaging through all of the other Quentin Tarantino sidebar videos. I found this lovely gem and found it interesting that the pipe scene in Inglourious Basterds can be considered a sexual referent. It's just cool knowing that directors actually put thought into every aspect of the movie just for the audience to analyze. Well, not all directors...but certainly the best.

Visual structure is an important aspect of film. The greater the contrast in a visual component, the more the visual intensity or dynamic increases. In the same manner, the more intense the visual stimulus, the more intense the audience reaction. This is a scene from Django Unchained; leave it up to Quentin Tarantino to make the simple scene of serving beer visually engaging and exciting. At 34 seconds, depth cues help the audience believe they are seeing depth on a two-dimensional screen. Also note the warm tones of the set, creating an easy feeling. As it should be, as it's the beginning of a new friendship and camaraderie!
April Fools Day
So, there's a lot of material to be covered in photojournalism and photography technique. From its humble beginning with Sir John Herschel who coined the word "photography", Nicephore Niepce who is considered the "father of photography" (first photo), and Louis Daguerre who first mass produced pictures of objects and people, photography is a field full of intricate processes and waiting for the right moment. Depth of field is an important aspect of photography and is governed by three factors: aperture, shutter speed and ISO. It's easiest to think of it as a triangle where all sides are working together to get the perfect shot. If one aspect is changed, the other two must follow, depending on the first aspect's change. It makes a lot more sense in my head...

I felt heavier walking out of class today. We watched the documentary War Photographer which outlined the professional life of war photojournalist James Nachtwey. Seeing what it took to get these photos that most of us will take for granted is scary. It was so interesting because in the documentary, we actually got to see him taking photos in Rwanda, but it was from his point of view. It was so bizarre because his photos actually capture these miserable moments in the most graceful way. Definitely one of the most inspiring class, so far. Not to mention he was a fox.

In my last post I mentioned that people have to be aware of the culture in order to understand editorial cartoons. Without prior knowledge to the subject, the cartoon itself becomes an "inside joke" and someone is left out. Now, that's usually how I feel when Dr. Nolan references all these "classic" movies, or specific examples in class. BUT, on Monday I actually knew one of the examples which was A Scanner Darkly, released in 2006. It's a rotoscope animation film. I remember seeing it because I had never seen anything like it before. The animation looked so realistic yet cartoonish. It reminded me of a graphic novel. So, that was pretty cool. From the cartoon technique lecture it can be noted that there are three types of single-framed cartoons: caricatures, editorial and humorous. One of the first editorial cartoons in America was Benjamin Franklin's work, "Join or Die". Multi-framed cartoons, comic strips and animated films, technique, and types of animation were the key notes of the lecture.

Both humorous and deeply serious, editorial cartoons have been used as a subversive or radical medium to comment on and critique the mainstream. No one did them better than three-time Pulitzer Prize winner Paul Conrad. They are usually composed of two elements: caricatures and allusions. Relying on visual puns and social/political awareness, the viewer must mentally elaborate on the visual stimulus to interpret the message.

The graphic work of Saul Bass still inspires today, like in the title sequence in Catch Me If You Can and the lyric video to Crickets by Drop City Yacht Club. Visual cues and sensual/perceptual theories are huge in determining graphic design as well as contrast, balance, rhythm and unity.

This photo blocks Taylor Rice's epic 'stache, but it was glorious! Being broke college kids, my friends and I caught all the free shows that we could at SXSW. Local Natives was supposed to be a free show, but SXSW bought the whole venue out. Us peasants without badges and wristbands were lucky enough to get in with a surprise $25 admission. I am not complaining though, they were worth it. They played a few songs from Hummingbird and the best from Gorilla Manor: Wide Eyes, Airplanes, World News, Sun Hands. GAAH! It was perfect. The feelings that were felt that night cannot be described...definitely the highlight of my spring break.

I wasn't able to watch any classic movies like I intended this spring break. I did, however, catch a documentary called "Hecho en Mexico". It was well produced and I loved the music that they used. A couple of famous Mexican actors made cameos, including that Mexican singer who was involved in kidnapping and has a really crazy story, but I can't remember her name. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that this documentary is worth watching. And, that is a picture of my dog, Ziggy. He's not doing so well and his kidneys are failing. He's only a year old! Just send your good vibes to Ziggy, the best German Shepherd in the world.

Since class was cancelled on Wednesday, I spent the time that would have been devoted to Visual Comm class browsing Reddit instead. During this Reddit session, I noticed there was a bunch of hype from the new Tomb Raider game that is coming out. Nostalgia got the best of me as I proceeded to look for anything related to the original Tomb Raider on PlayStation. Seen as to spring break is coming up, I had the most beautiful vision on how I would spend it. Sadly, there's only 6 more left on Amazon and they're $50 plus shipping. I guess I'll just have to spend my spring break getting stupid drunk like everyone else! Such a shame. Cheers!

Throughout my movie watching experiences, I've never paid much attention to the title sequences. I didn't know they were important or could actually foreshadow the film. Learning about title sequences and Saul Bass just adds to the theory that everything has a purpose. Especially in movie posters, the artist is burdened with the task of captivating, informing, and persuading consumers to see the film, just with a glance. I really like Saul Bass' style. It's incredibly simple, yet extremely powerful.
