“OnQ: A Perfect Circle ’s Maynard James Keenan Talks About the Gay Thing A Perfect Circle’s Maynard James Keenan has often been the subject of gay rumors, in part due to his desolate, androgynous croon as well as his sensitive emotional nature. With their new album “eMOTIVe” earning rave reviews, described by Keenan as “a collection of songs about war, peace, love and greed,” it’s no surprise that he’s speaking out right now. Q: What is your definition of moral values? MJK: Very simple–causing no harm. Live and let live should be the motto of all who follow a moral path. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Q: On some rock chat sites, some of your fans write that they think you are gay because of the very open way you express vulnerability and emotion in your songs. Why do you think some people equate men expressing their emotions with the idea of being gay? MJK: Well first of all, they need to “get out” more. Living in a war-driven economy, we men are taught to distance ourselves from our emotions, to control them. Emotional men don’t make good soldiers. It’s difficult to suppress a supposed enemy if you’re armed with an M16 and empathy. Q: How do you feel about gay marriage? MJK: I have a difficult enough time with monogamy. Marriage is beyond my scope of understanding, regardless of who wants to embrace it. However, I’ve always felt that marriage is a contract that defines the role of partners in a relationship. The hunter/gatherer plays one role. The other role is like that of the rhythm section or the foundation. It’s a symbiotic relationship. And in the event of one partners passing, the contract protects what these people have built together. Doesn’t seem that complicated to me. Q: If you had a child who was gay, what would you say to him/her when they told you? MJK: I would say, “Great. I’m enrolling you in Brazilian jiu jitsu classes so you kick the shit outta anyone who has a problem with who you are.” Q: Are you conscious of having gay fans? MJK: I’m conscious of having fans. None of my business what religion they choose or who they are compelled to love. Q: Do you think the alternative rock scene is welcoming to members of the gay and lesbian community? MJK: It feels to me like it’s a non-issue in this arena. I could be wrong. Q: You once wrote/said: “Ignorant heterosexuals are right to fear the gay community. They are the future. Our future. The next step in our evolution.” What did you mean by that? MJK: I was being flippant. The homophobic non-empathetic male leaders of this world who believe man was granted dominion over the earth by God are doing everything in their power to butt-rape this planet. However, this planet is far smarter than we are. I believe she has presented a solution. If the current state of men cannot discover compassion for this planet on their own, the earth will bear males who are made up entirely of compassion, emotion, empathy, and impeccable taste in shoes. It’s this sort of theory and philosophy that’s kept me virtually anonymous in the eyes of pop culture. Q: The recent election results have shocked many gay people into wanting to do something to make a difference in enlarging gay people’s rights. Has the election had that kind of effect on you? MJK: Duh.”
