I want to tell you guys a story

I have a best friend, for privacy, I’ll call him Matt. We became close because I pulled away a guy who was punching him and took him to the nurse’s room when we were at school. We understood each other, two misfits that didn’t quite belong anywhere in the school hierarchy. We geeked out at nerdy stuff, kicked each other’s asses at Magic the Gathering. Matt loved the X-men, I loved Harry Potter. I even did self inserts of fan fiction where we rescued the world together!

We were as close as a girl and a guy could be without being a couple. I even got him a job where I worked.

But we fell out.

It was over something really, really petty and we were nasty to each other, pitting mutual friends against one another. I was hurt and so was he but we were too bloody stubborn and headstrong to apologise.

I blanked him at work as did he. I refused to hear what he had to say after two months of not talking. I couldn’t stand being in the same room as him.

It was only when we were invited to the same party that a mutual friend knocked some sense into me. I still think they got us together on purpose so we could finally face each other.

The friend gave it to me straight, told me that this whole feud was childish and that we both needed to look at ourselves and see what a waste the friendship would have been if we didn’t talk.

I seethed when she told me to grow up before she walked away but after a while I realised she that she was right, years of friendship I had with Matt shouldn’t end in the way it was going. I stopped sulking and went into the same room as him.

The other friends left us, sensing that we needed some time alone. We made small talk about the new Batman film, it was awkward until we both realised what we had to do.

We apologised to each other. We were both wrong in what we did. We forgave each other because we knew there was no point in holding onto the resentment that had festered in our hearts and when we said sorry, it was like a weight had lifted and the air had cleared.

We talked about nerdy stuff like we used to, finding that connection that bonded us together again. When it was time to go, we hugged each other tight and said sorry again.

We’ve lost touch recently but not in a bad way, we both just walk different paths now. I always hope he’s doing well, especially with his son.

Friends fight and we hurt each other by our words sometimes but that anger and resentment holds no purpose other than to hurt you further. Don’t let stubbornness rule your feelings. Talk to each other.

Tumblr is getting a facelift

Some time ago we took a long, hard look at how we stacked up to the recommendations outlined in the Web Accessibility Initiative of the World Wide Web Consortium. This is the initiative that sets standards for accessibility for people who may need assistance using the internet. It outlines steps to take and tools to use to create as seamless of an experience online as possible, whether you have auditory, visual, or neurological disabilities, are using a limited device, are on a slow connection with limited bandwidth, or…well, a whole bunch of other reasons.

The result of that long, hard look? Not great. We needed to make sure Tumblr was accessible to anyone who wants to use it.

Over the past few weeks we’ve been making changes to do just that. Our inaccessible menus are more accessible, we fixed our poorly described elements, and increased overall readability. You can read more about all that in our most recent @javascript post about the mobile web.

Part of making Tumblr more accessible involved upping the color contrast in our UI, most notably on the dashboard and everywhere else that familiar blue touches. The light grays and muted blues had a contrast ratio of 2.02:1. What does that mean? Bad. It was bad, and we needed to do better by people with visual impairments.

Enter your new dashboard:

It looks…cleaner, doesn’t it? Like someone dusted off the poorly accessible bits. The blue is darker, the grays are lighter, all the buttons and icons are brighter with our new brand colors, and it has a contrast ratio of 7.87:1 What does that mean? Good! Very good.

The switch to your brand new, higher contrast, less dusty dashboard has been slowly rolling out this week. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’ll get it sometime in the next few days.

A note: We know that this color change on the dashboard negatively impacts the beautiful bluespace art so many of you have created over the past few years. Seeing these older posts lose the utilization of the dashboard—something that made them so special and unique to just Tumblr—is certainly not a great feeling. There’s no way around that. We hope, however, that this change only means newer, more bluespace art will be created, and that this time around it will be easier for everyone to experience.

Goodbye, #36465D. You’ve treated many of us well, but #001935 will treat every single one of us even better.

I had heard a couple of their songs on the radio, but I never really thought I’d be into their music. My sister plays piano, so I had heard Sugar, We’re Going Down, The Last Of The Real Ones, and Saving Rock And Roll already, courtesy of her playing them. One day I got curious and searched them up, found a couple of their albums and listened to all the songs. Now I’m in love with their music thanks to my sister. Oh, also the same thing happened with Panic At The Disco, My Chemical Romance, and Twenty One Pilots.😅

I walked into the CD store at the local mall (which is now a field, btw, they tore it down years ago) in search of a specific Green Day album. There was music playing and we asked what it was and the guy at the desk handed us a CD. He said it was his favorite, some new album from an up and coming group. I didn’t buy the Green Day album. I bought that one.

It was Take This To Your Grave. It’s still in my car CD player. When I got my new car I moved it over and it was the second CD I put in (I put a different one first in just in case my CD player ate it).

I found about them since... 10 years ago or so, I think? When X Music Videos were popular on youtube. Series music videos, anime music videos, game music videos... Thnks fr th mmrs was the first one I listened to and it featured Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 footage <3

It occurred to Pooh and Piglet that they hadn’t heard from Eeyore for several days, so they put on their hats and coats and trotted across the Hundred Acre Wood to Eeyore’s stick house. Inside the house was Eeyore.

“Hello Eeyore,” said Pooh.

“Hello Pooh. Hello Piglet,” said Eeyore, in a Glum Sounding Voice.

“We just thought we’d check in on you,” said Piglet, “because we hadn’t heard from you, and so we wanted to know if you were okay.”

Eeyore was silent for a moment. “Am I okay?” he asked, eventually. “Well, I don’t know, to be honest. Are any of us really okay? That’s what I ask myself. All I can tell you, Pooh and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. Which is why I haven’t bothered you. Because you wouldn’t want to waste your time hanging out with someone who is Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All, would you now.”

Pooh looked and Piglet, and Piglet looked at Pooh, and they both sat down, one on either side of Eeyore in his stick house.

Eeyore looked at them in surprise. “What are you doing?”

“We’re sitting here with you,” said Pooh, “because we are your friends. And true friends don’t care if someone is feeling Sad, or Alone, or Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. True friends are there for you anyway. And so here we are.”

“Oh,” said Eeyore. “Oh.” And the three of them sat there in silence, and while Pooh and Piglet said nothing at all; somehow, almost imperceptibly, Eeyore started to feel a very tiny little bit better.

Because Pooh and Piglet were There. No more; no less.
