THE SIGN SAYS WELCOME. THE FOREST SCREAMS IT
The trees thick and old, roots that were twisted. St. Augustine’s called to six. Buchanan. Wilder. Barbour. King. Harding. Finchley. Like moths to a flame, they come. Norfolk becomes more than a name as they hammer a sign into the dirt – it becomes a town, a society, a home. The trees rejoice, the wind whistles. Finally, food.
Quaint town, silent town. Speckled with dishevelled lawns, peeling paint and drawn secretive curtains. Although, bright little bandboxes of social aspiration do exist. Witness newly painted doors, carriage lamps, an occasional hanging basket, the front garden paved to provide standing for the car. Decades passed and Norfolk grew in size.
Norfolk, Washington. The sign reads welcome. The forest screams it.The town harbours a dark secret, kept clandestine by generations of the founding families. Underneath the sprawling woods lies an ancient power that runs deep into the earth and those who inhabit it. It demands payment in blood and flesh.
For to thrive, they must sacrifice. Every few years, citizens disappear into the mist of the hungry forests, as if it was marked on a calendar. The town stays eurythmic. Quaint town, silent town. Don’t listen to the screams.You’re safe here. We promise.
