Netflix DMC rant about Nell Goldstein, Ebony and Ivory
I watched the sneak peak and I'm like...Ugh..They fucked up. AGAIN.
I had my speculations since I saw the preview for season 2 and I talked about Nell Goldstein.
For those who didn't read the DMC1 novel, I'm gonna mention stuff that are considered spoilers, thus, proceed with caution and that applies just for the fact that this post is made by someone who expressed their opinions about this adaptation and they are not positive...
To start of with, I dislike how Nell looks. Isn't it great that they followed the source material?
The butchered one. T_T I've mentioned it before how the localization for the novel is fucked up.
Here's what the English version says about her:
""She may have looked like Methuselah's grandmother, but she could juice up a squirt gun until it could take out an elephant."
That line is from this fragment that I translated some time ago which doesn't doesn't describe her as a wrinkly old lady...
Congrats Netflix DMC for making her look like an OLD MAN T_T
I duuno about you, but given that Dante is supposed to be in his 20s in the novel and her son was about the same age, I think Nell was supposed to be in her late 40's.
From the novel illustrations and this artwork made by Shirow Miwa, (the artist for the novel illustrations btw) personally, I think Nell does look masculine and looks great. You can tell that she is old but doesn't look like a grandma. The localization exaggerated her looks even though the original text doesn't say anything like that...
But the Netflix design...That's an old uncle. They must have used the localization to create her design...
Also, I personally don't like that they made her smoke. I don't recall she did that and similar to Dante, who Kamiya made to be a cool character without having to smoke. I don't think it suits her...Personally, it's enough that she talks a bit rude and that expresses that she is a tough, the smoking isn't needed.
What I've seen from the trailer is enough to tell me that Nell and Dante's relationship will pale in comparison to whatever the adaptation will show. They had history.
It's obvious they didn't knew each other when Dante was a mercenary using the alias Tony Redgrave. Also, why even use it now when he's working for DARCOM and they know him as Dante? What is the purpose of using Tony Redgrave?
Regarding Ebony and Ivory now...The pistols were made by Nell and finished by Tony. They made them together in the novel.
The fact that they don't have the misspelling WARKS...It had significance for Nell.
Man, they fucked up. Like I said, I dunno what kind of relationship are they're supposed to have. She was like a mother to him. If she ends up getting killed like in the novel, her death won't have much of an impact in my opinion.
So yeah...tell me what you think.
