You are not the daughter of the witches they couldn't burn you are a white woman with a rock collection and wicca was invented in the 1950s
I have a little spiritual woowoo to me so I Am familiar with some freaky neopagan/new age/etc stuff & every time I'd be like "hmm I'm getting a weird vibe from all the bioessentialist gender fertility stuff, what's up with that?" & I'd look it up & it's like "the founder made all of this up based on appropriating other cultures he didn't understand as well as fabricating historical documents, to make as many women have sex with him as possible" & I say Oh ok. And this is like really easily accessible information but people are still being grifted into buying penis candles for their fake ancient rituals
Does anyone know where that post is that talks about a child's prayer to Saint Michael? I remember "kill it with your sword, kill it with your sword, amen" quite distinctly but I can't remember the rest
WAIT I found it, it goes like this:
Dear St. Michael, guard my room. Don’t let anything eat me or kill me. Kill it with your sword. Kill it with your sword. Amen.

I’m reposting this with a link to some sources from the OP, btw; I’m sorry for not tagging them, but Tumblr won’t let me and I’m guessing it’s a privacy settings thing.

There is evidence of complex gender identities in Ancient Mesopotamia, particularly in the cult of the goddess Inanna and her priests.

Hiya so I'm just gonna toss a little article out into the void bc why the hell not this is my blog.
Magick for Skeptics
I've been an agnostic for a little under a year now. I really love the ideological freedom that I have now, but I have also really felt the lack of a spiritual practice. So, I've been exploring atheopaganism. Atheopaganism (at least the version defined by Mark Green) is exactly what it sounds like - I hold a scientific materialist view of the world, but also practice religious rituals for the mental health benefits. I wanted to talk a little bit about how I view magick through a skeptical lens.
Embrace the Placebo
Knowing about a cognitive bias does not stop it from working. Even knowing that you are currently being affected by a cognitive bias does not stop it from working.
Not only do you have to recognize that you're being affected by a cognitive bias, you have to actively correct your thinking against it. In cases like propaganda, or the recency bias, or confirmation bias, this is a huge inconvenience.
But with the placebo effect, we can exploit this.
Consider the following scenario: You want to start working out. But after years of trying and failing to adopt the habit, with more than a little internalized fatphobia mixed in, the mere thought of exercising fills you with dread, guilt, and shame. You fully understand this at a rational level. But that alone does not make the feelings go away.
This is the ideal situation to exploit the placebo effect through a magickal working. If we want to alter our feelings or perceptions, all we need to do is devise some kind of ritual that feels like it should help. That will be enough to trigger the placebo effect - and because You Are Not Immune to Propaganda, it will work even if you don't really believe in it! Here is a ritual I devised for the exact purpose described above.
Remember that we're dealing entirely with feelings, attitudes, and states of mind here. The placebo effect won't cure cancer or anything, obviously. But it is extremely powerful as a therapeutic measure! The deeper, more primal parts of you that respond best to physical, tangible action. Think of this as a way for you, a conscious thinking human, to tell the lizard part of your brain what's what.
(You might notice the names of a few of my invented deities in there - having them as symbolic, metaphorical entities is super useful for me. I might go into more detail about that in another post!)
Written in the Stars
Mr. Rogers once said that "anything mentionable is manageable, and anything human is mentionable." Or, to paraphrase, "being able to talk about a thing gives you power over it." So, if you want more control over yourself and your life, you want a practice that helps you talk about them. Enter divination.
Divination, for me, is about introspection. Take tarot, for instance. In a tarot reading, you randomly assign symbols and concepts to different aspects of your life, and then find a way to make sense of that random spread. This forces you to introspect. Here's a reading that I took in the days leading up to coming out to my parents:
The spread here is Situation | Action | Outcome. My interpretation was that the inverted Ace of Cups showed how my gender dysphoria had been draining all the life out of me for years. The Action card, the Eight of Swords, showed how this situation had been caused by my inability to realize I was trans. And the Outcome card, the Nine of Swords, was a reminder that if I didn't change something, nothing would get better for me.
When I felt anxious and scared about coming out to my parents, looking back on this reading reminded me why I needed to do it, which gave me the strength to go through with it. Anything mentionable is manageable.
I'll also briefly mention that astrology can work the same way for a lot of people. Your natal chart is like a big, complicated tarot spread for your entire life. (And there are actually astrological correspondences built into the most common tarot systems as well!)
Sources and Further Reading
Definitely check out the Placebo Magick podcast, linked below - it was my source for developing an anti-procrastination spell, and it also introduced me to the uses of astrology as divination.
Also, if you want to learn more about atheopaganism, here is Mark Green's blog on the topic.

Your body is a temple, you should consider decorating it, putting weird symbols all over, animating your surroundings with chants, and filling it with lots of sex
This is what hieroglyphs and figures in ancient Egyptian temples looked like before their colors faded. They were recreated using a polychromatic light display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, following thorough research.
If this is your kind of thing, new zealand has the world's first life sized re-creation of an Egyptian temple for an idea of how it would have looked back then
For those who want to know where in New Zealand it is, this is in Hamilton Gardens in Hamilton!
Everyone who plays around with Tarot cards long enough winds up with a “bad” card that they love. I just barely persuaded my husband not to get the Ten of Swords tattooed on his body; traditionally, it shows a corpse with ten swords stuck in their body and means “utter ruin,” but he thought that if it took ten swords to kill you, then you must have put up a pretty good fight.
honestly this is the most badass ten of swords interpretation i've ever heard. i'm stealing this
No matter what kind of spirituality or faith you practice, you should be educated on spiritual psychosis and how to recognize its signs. The more awareness we spread about this, the less harm over time to religious communities across the globe. Learning about spiritual psychosis saves lives.
Psychosis, by definition, is "a collection of symptoms that happen when a person has trouble telling the difference between what’s real and what’s not" (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
I'll remind everyone that I am not a doctor, just a psychosis survivor. I don't speak for the entire medical community. I do, however, draw my sources and information from scientific journals, doctors, or other proven scientific-based sources. That is coming from a spirit worker and witch.
"At which point does something count as spiritual psychosis, and who decides that?"
I know you said this was kind of a rhetorical question, so if you'd like me to delete this post, I'd be totally happy to! But I couldn't interpret if you wanted an actual answer to this because it was only part a rhetorical question (and I am autistic). No harm meant at all by this post, just want to answer your question! :)
As a personal note—this is the reason why we should be knowledge about psychosis, as it does have clear boundaries and a diagnostic set of symptoms; saying that the boundaries of psychosis are blurred is part of what contributes to the rampant spread of spiritual psychosis in religious spaces. I don't want to point the finger at all at this person, but just wanted to use the wording as an example of how folks can be unaware of the damage that could be caused due to a lack of understanding!
If your belief is interfering with your capacity to meet the ordinary demands of life, that is psychosis (NIH, 2015).
If your belief is harming you in an In emotional, mental, or physical distress and the delusion is harming you in some way, that is psychosis (NIMH).
If you are having hallucinations (hearing or seeing things that aren't there) that are impacting your ability to function, that is psychosis (Cleveland Clinic, 2022).
This scientific journal expands on the criteria separating spiritual psychosis from a religious-spiritual crisis. My post on what spiritual psychosis is and what the symptoms are goes more in-depth on the actual symptoms and signs and how to recognize/pinpoint psychosis in spiritual spaces.
This is a great example of how useful these conversations can be in religious/pagan/spiritual spaces! When in doubt, ask or talk to a medical professional who is familiar with diagnosing and recognizing psychosis in patients.
Don’t worry! This post caused me to explain myself every day for almost two weeks. I definitely have had reblogs, comments, and asks in the double digits defending a deadly medical condition. Or straight up calling me ableist for spreading mental health awareness about psychosis. I will repeat: I am federally disabled and have a service dog. Please dear lord stop calling me ableist. I just laugh at you. It doesn’t do anything to me, I promise.
As a friendly reminder, I am a psychosis survivor. Not only am I psychosis survivor, but I survived religious/spiritual psychosis that I slipped into from the twin flame/Divine Feminine pipeline. Nothing you threaten me with or say about psychosis will change my opinion on how dangerous this problem is in our communities. I’ve had a first-hand account of how a simple belief turned into one of the most detrimental and traumatizing experiences I’ve had. If we actually want to be taken seriously as pagans, we absolutely need to be aware of the rampant spread and promotion of psychosis in this community. The ONLY way to do that is to elevate the voices of those who have suffered from spiritual psychosis. Listen to the survivors and those with the condition. We can tell you - it’s not some cute delusion that’s helping you escape the world. It’s a deadly medical condition that disguises itself as harmless delusion until escapism becomes suicidal tendencies. In any spiritual or religious practice, you MUST be grounded and knowledgeable about what you’re getting into.
And the biggest way you can be aware is knowing the symptoms of psychosis to recognize its onset in yourself and treat it before it worsens.
All the backlash I’ve received is not only deeply concerning, but saddening to know how truly rampant the problem is, let alone the amount of misinformation out there.
Do better, pagans and witches!
May Apollo bless all those who have had a run-in with psychosis with healing energy and care.
Look, I have spent significant time trying to help a member of my kindred get the help they need for their mental health. I have watched as they have slid deeper into psychosis, and were unable to recognize that they had detached from consensus reality and were losing friends. To feel so helpless as a young friend destroys their mundane future in pursuit of the spiritual, when you know they could find a balance and become a brilliant leader in the world, is awful - especially when their own despair leads to self-harm. And I have spoken with dear friends in the pagan community who (like OP) have recovered after having hallucinatory symptoms of their mental illness. The following advice is informed by all that, and not meant to invalidate your spiritual experiences. (Which may be why OP has seen such backlash. People get understandably defensive when their most closely held beliefs are questioned.)
I am begging y’all: take your prescription medications. If your meds are making you have extra vivid dreams, are fucking with your sleep, or are causing you to have visions: talk to your care team ASAP about trying a different prescription. It can take awhile to get the right meds, and maybe the right diagnosis, but your spiritual practice will improve once you find the right supplements to your brain’s natural state. You will find your discernment as a pagan is enhanced when you’re rested and able to distinguish between hallucinations and clairisenses (yes, both can be real).
The idea that medication will interfere with spiritual practice needs to die in a fire. Would you say that to someone on insulin? Or say “your blood pressure medication is going to interfere with your connection with the Gods”? No? Then don’t say it to somebody on psychiatric meds. The Gods have many ways to make Themselves known, tweaking your brain chemistry won’t stop Them. And if your poor ol’ meat computer is having trouble making the neurotransmitters you need, it’s fine to supplement with store-bought - and way healthier in the long run than self-medicating in other ways.
The veil isn’t supposed to be so thin that you can vividly remember your prior lifetimes. We come into this life not remembering other lives for good reason.
The veil isn’t supposed to be so thin that your dreams or your waking hours are a constant parade of supernatural entities. At least some of your dreams are supposed to be the random junk caused by your brain sorting through what happened since your last sleep and figuring out where to file those memories. And you’re not supposed to be able to remember the dream clearly once you’re fully awake, that’s why the dream journal lives on your bedside table.
Your body and brain NEED sleep and basic self-care. And you can’t heal body and soul if you can’t rest; you can’t burn the candle at both ends without dimming your light longer-term. Maybe you just need the veil to be thicker for a little while, like you need the blackout curtains closed when you have a migraine, so you can rest. The experts who are part of your care team can help you with that.
Most importantly: being unable to keep up with your mundane responsibilities and friendships because of your spiritual experiences is not healthy or sustainable. You need to be able to participate in both mundane life and your magickal or pagan experiences. Your mundane life is important! You can do things in this embodied reality that even the gods cannot! It’s why you are here! So a balance between mundane and magickal is a healthy boundary to set with any and all otherworldly beings.
No entity or person that has your best interests at heart will disagree with you setting that boundary. No entity or person that has your best interests at heart will disagree with you getting the help of your team (family, friends, medical caregivers, deities, whoever) to take care of yourself so you can reach your fullest potential in both the mundane and spiritual worlds.
And yes! Your spiritual experiences are vivid and real to you, and that’s entirely valid! Only you can decide if they are Real and Important to you - not anyone else. But if they’re interfering with your day-to-day life, you need to take a spiritual break and concentrate on rest and self-care for a few months. When you’re no longer running on fumes, it’ll be so much easier to grok everything you have been going through, and maybe take in additional details, and reevaluate your personal gnoses. Maybe you’ll decide part of it wasn’t real, and that’s okay - every human falls prey to confirmation bias once in a while. Maybe you’ll discern everything you experienced was extraordinary, and now you’ll be rested enough for the next stage of your journey. Either way, your spiritual discernment will be improved by looking back at your experiences when you’re at your physical and mental peak in mundane ways.
Being embodied beings is hard, our bodies and minds are fragile, and sometimes they need extra care. Be gentle with yourself. Find whatever supports you need. I promise you, the Gods don’t mind waiting while you take a break to gather your strength. They have all the time in all the worlds.
And any human who judges you for needing rest and supports, or who judges you for your beliefs now or for changing those beliefs later if you choose to, is a complete asshole.
